1.1 Introduction
Computer education is defined as the structured process of acquiring knowledge, skills, and competencies in the use of computer systems, software applications, and digital technologies to solve problems, communicate effectively, and perform tasks efficiently (UNESCO, 2019). Employability skills refer to the combination of personal attributes, technical abilities, and cognitive competencies that enable an individual to secure and sustain employment, perform effectively in professional roles, and adapt to the changing demands of the labour market (Yorke, 2006). In the Nigerian context, employability is increasingly influenced by graduates' ability to demonstrate digital literacy, problem-solving skills, teamwork, and innovation alongside academic qualifications. With rapid technological advancements, employers now prioritize candidates who are competent in using digital tools to enhance efficiency, decision-making, and service delivery (Adebayo, 2021).
As a prelude to other parts of this study, this chapter will discuss the background upon which this study was initiated, the statement of problems that led to this study, the Aim and Objectives of the study. Others are significance of the study, scope of work, research hypothesis and questions, limitation of the study and definition of terms.
1.2 Background of Study
Computer education has become an indispensable aspect of modern learning systems, equipping individuals with the necessary knowledge and skills to operate in increasingly technology-driven environments. According to UNESCO (2019), computer education involves the systematic instruction and practice in the use of digital technologies, encompassing both hardware and software competencies that are critical for personal, academic, and professional development. It is designed to foster problem-solving abilities, critical thinking, and effective communication skills, all of which are essential components of employability. The integration of computer education in higher institutions is therefore seen as a strategic approach to preparing graduates to meet the dynamic demands of the labor market.
Employability skills are increasingly defined as a combination of technical knowledge, personal attributes, and cognitive competencies that allow graduates to secure and maintain meaningful employment. Yorke (2006) stated that employability is not solely dependent on academic qualifications but is equally shaped by the ability to demonstrate competencies that align with workplace requirements, including adaptability, digital literacy, teamwork, and innovation. In the context of Nigeria, employability challenges are compounded by a mismatch between the skills acquired in educational institutions and those required by employers. Adebayo (2021) reported that many Nigerian graduates leave universities without adequate exposure to practical computer applications, limiting their capacity to perform effectively in the workplace.
Several studies have affirmed the critical role of computer education in equipping graduates with marketable skills. Adeyemo (2020) contended that proficiency in computer applications such as data analysis, database management, programming, and digital communication significantly improves graduates' competitiveness in the job market. The author asserted that graduates who demonstrate competence in digital tools are more likely to secure employment and perform optimally in professional settings. Similarly, Okolie, Igwe, and Nwosu (2020) stated that higher education institutions in Nigeria often emphasize theoretical instruction over practical skill acquisition, which results in graduates lacking the hands-on experience needed to meet employer expectations (Okolie et al., 2020).
The National Bureau of Statistics (2023) affirmed that a significant proportion of unemployed graduates lack basic digital skills, which limits their employability and hinders economic productivity. This scenario is particularly concerning given that contemporary workplaces increasingly rely on technology for operations, communication, and service delivery. Jobberman Nigeria, a leading recruitment platform, has reported that employers prioritize candidates with proficiency in computer applications, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication skills, all of which are expected outcomes of comprehensive computer education programs (Jobberman Nigeria, 2023).
According to Oladipo and Ajibola (2019), higher education curricula in many Nigerian universities are outdated, with limited emphasis on emerging digital technologies and applied learning. They contended that without deliberate integration of practical computer education into academic programs, graduates remain underprepared to navigate digital workplaces. Furthermore, Onah and Nwosu (2021) asserted that even where computer education is offered, disparities in infrastructure, access to technology, and teaching quality reduce its effectiveness in enhancing employability skills.
Okafor (2020) stated that the inability of graduates to secure employment despite academic qualifications contributes to underemployment, economic stagnation, and social unrest. The author affirmed that addressing the employability gap requires a concerted effort to integrate computer education as a core component of curriculum design, emphasizing practical skill acquisition, digital literacy, and problem-solving capabilities. In addition, Adeyemi and Fashina (2022) reported that graduates with high competence in digital technologies are better positioned to engage in entrepreneurship, freelance work, and remote employment opportunities, further supporting the assertion that computer education is a critical enabler of employability. This study is set against the backdrop of the growing demand for digitally competent graduates, the persistent employability gap in Nigeria, and the evolving recruitment practices of platforms.
1.3 Statement of Problems
Investigation revealed that the increasing rate of graduate unemployment in Nigeria remains a major socio-economic concern, even with the steady expansion of tertiary institutions and academic programmes. Many graduates leave school with theoretical knowledge but lack the practical digital and technological competencies required in today's labour market. In a digital-driven economy where employers demand proficiency in computer applications, data management, communication technologies, and problem-solving tools, the absence of adequate computer education is contributing to the gap between graduates' qualifications and industry expectations. Studies have shown that employability is no longer determined solely by academic certificates but by the possession of relevant digital and transferable skills that align with workplace realities (World Bank, 2020; International Labour Organization, 2022).
Furthermore, the teaching of computer-related courses is often limited to basic theoretical instruction, with inadequate infrastructure, insufficient practical exposure, and outdated curricula in many Nigerian institutions. On the other hand, employers and recruitment platforms continue to report that a significant number of job applicants lack essential digital competencies such as data analysis, software proficiency, online communication skills, and the ability to adapt to evolving technologies (National Bureau of Statistics, 2023). It is against this backdrop that this study seeks to examine the role of computer education in enhancing employability skills of Nigerian graduates, with specific reference to Jobberman Nigeria.
1.4 Aim and Objectives of Study
The aim of this study is to examine the role of computer education in enhancing employability skills among Nigerian graduates.
The specific objectives of the study are:
- To determine the extent to which computer education enhances digital skills required for employment.
- To evaluate the level of computer education received by Nigerian graduates.
- To assess the influence of computer education on graduates' problem-solving, communication, and teamwork abilities.
- To examine the effectiveness of Jobberman Nigeria in assessing the employability skills of digitally competent graduates.
- To identify challenges within the existing computer education system that hinder employability outcomes.
1.5 Research Questions
Based on the stated objectives, the research seeks to answer the following questions:
- What is the level of computer education received by Nigerian graduates?
- To what extent does computer education enhance digital skills required for employment?
- How does computer education influence graduates' problem-solving, communication, and teamwork abilities?
- How effective is Jobberman Nigeria in evaluating the employability skills of digitally competent graduates?
- What are the challenges within the existing computer education system that hinder graduates' employability?
1.6 Research Hypotheses
In order to pursue the objective of this study, the following generalized statements have been designed to guide and aids in obtaining the result for the experiment to be conducted. For this work, the null hypothesis will be represented with H0 while the alternative hypothesis will be represented with hypothesis H1.
- H01: There is no significant relationship between computer education and the employability skills of Nigerian graduates.
- H02: Computer education significantly enhances the digital skills of Nigerian graduates.
- H03: Computer education positively influences graduates' problem-solving, communication, and teamwork abilities.
- H04: Jobberman Nigeria effectively assesses the employability skills of graduates with computer education.
- H05: Challenges within the existing computer education system significantly hinder employability outcomes.
1.7 Significance of Study
The outcome of this research will benefit students and graduates by emphasizing the importance of acquiring practical computer skills that align with employer expectations. It will also help students and graduates understand the importance of computer education in improving their employability and career prospects.
Furthermore, the research will enable educators and curriculum developers to identify gaps in practical training and improve computer education programs to align with labor market needs. In addition, this research will contribute to the broader academic discourse on employability and workforce development in Nigeria.
Lastly, this study will serve as a resource for continuous improvement in higher education and workforce development in Nigeria.
1.8 Scope of Study
The scope of the research is focused on Nigerian graduates who have undergone computer education programs in tertiary institutions and their employability outcomes as assessed by Jobberman Nigeria.
The research will be geographically limited to Lagos State, where Jobberman Nigeria has its headquarters and a large concentration of job seekers, providing access to data on graduates' digital skills, recruitment experiences, and employability status.
1.9 Limitations of the Study
The study was constrained by the diversity of tertiary institutions and the variability in computer education quality, which was not uniformly standardized across Nigeria. This variation was likely to affect the comparability of graduates' skills.

Computer Education:

Recruitment platforms, such as Jobberman Nigeria, are online systems that connect job seekers with employers and assess candidates' competencies and suitability for employment (Jobberman Nigeria, 2023).
Graduates:
Graduates are individuals who have successfully completed a program of study at a tertiary institution and obtained an academic qualification (Okolie et al., 2020).
