1.1 Introduction
Guidance and counseling refer to a systematic process of assisting individuals to understand themselves, identify their strengths and weaknesses, make informed decisions, solve personal and academic problems, and achieve their educational, vocational, and personal goals. Guidance involves providing information, orientation, and direction to help individuals make appropriate life choices, while counseling is a professional relationship through which trained counselors assist individuals in resolving emotional, social, educational, and psychological challenges affecting their overall development (American School Counselor Association, 2022).
Education remains one of the most important instruments for national development, human capital formation, and socioeconomic transformation. The quality of education received by students significantly determines their ability to contribute meaningfully to society (UNESCO, 2021). As a prelude to other parts of this study, this chapter will discuss the background upon which this study was initiated, the statement of problems that led to this study, the Aim and Objectives of the study. Others are Significance of the study, Scope of work, Research hypothesis and questions, Limitation of the study and Definition of technical terms.
1.2 Background of Study
Guidance and counseling have become indispensable components of modern educational systems because they provide students with the support required to achieve academic excellence, personal development, and career success. According to John W. Santrock (2020), education is a continuous developmental process that requires learners to receive not only classroom instruction but also emotional, psychological, and social support that enhances effective learning. This perspective underscores the importance of guidance and counseling as professional services designed to help students identify their potentials, overcome learning challenges, and make informed educational and vocational decisions. In contemporary schools, counseling services have evolved beyond addressing students' behavioural problems to becoming strategic interventions that promote academic achievement, emotional stability, and responsible citizenship.
According to Charles M. Reigeluth (2018), effective learning occurs when learners are provided with supportive educational environments that address their cognitive and non-cognitive needs. Similarly, UNESCO (2021) reported that quality education extends beyond curriculum delivery to include psychosocial support systems that enhance students' well-being and academic success. Guidance and counseling therefore serve as essential educational services that enable students to cope with academic pressure, emotional difficulties, interpersonal conflicts, and career uncertainties that may otherwise hinder their educational progress.
Academic performance remains one of the most widely accepted indicators of educational success because it reflects students' mastery of instructional objectives and their ability to apply acquired knowledge and skills. According to Anita Woolfolk (2022), students' academic achievement is influenced by several interacting factors, including motivation, self-regulation, learning strategies, family background, school climate, and emotional well-being. Furthermore, Robert E. Slavin (2020) asserted that successful learning depends not only on effective teaching but also on the availability of support services that assist students in overcoming barriers to learning. These views suggest that academic excellence cannot be achieved solely through classroom instruction without complementary guidance and counseling services.
Guidance involves providing learners with appropriate information, direction, and assistance that enable them to make sound educational, vocational, and personal decisions. Counseling, on the other hand, focuses on establishing a professional relationship through which individuals receive help in understanding themselves, resolving challenges, and developing appropriate coping strategies. According to Samuel T. Gladding (2021), counseling promotes self-awareness, problem-solving ability, emotional adjustment, and personal growth, thereby enabling individuals to function more effectively in different aspects of life. Supporting this position, American School Counselor Association (2022) affirmed that comprehensive school counseling programmes contribute significantly to students' academic achievement, career readiness, and social-emotional development.
Students at the secondary school level encounter numerous developmental challenges that may affect their educational attainment if appropriate interventions are not provided. According to John W. Santrock (2020), adolescence is characterized by rapid physical, emotional, cognitive, and social changes that often expose learners to identity conflicts, peer influence, stress, and decision-making difficulties. Likewise, UNICEF (2022) stated that adolescents require continuous psychosocial support to navigate educational and personal challenges effectively. These realities emphasize the need for professional guidance and counseling services capable of addressing students' academic and emotional needs within the school environment.
The increasing complexity of educational systems has made guidance and counseling more relevant than ever before. According to Anita Woolfolk (2022), many students experience academic difficulties due to poor study habits, low academic motivation, examination anxiety, ineffective time management, and inadequate learning strategies. Moreover, Barry J. Zimmerman (2013) contended that learners who receive structured guidance on goal setting, self-monitoring, and self-regulated learning demonstrate improved academic outcomes compared to those without such support. This study is set against the backdrop of the increasing concern over students' academic performance in secondary schools and the growing recognition that effective guidance and counseling services can play a significant role in addressing academic, personal, social, and career-related challenges confronting learners in Ogun State, Nigeria.
1.3 Statement of Problems
Investigation revealed that despite continuous investment in the education sector and the introduction of guidance and counseling services in many secondary schools across Ogun State, students' academic performance has remained a matter of concern. A considerable number of students continue to experience poor study habits, inadequate career awareness, examination anxiety, peer influence, and poor decision-making, all of which negatively affect their academic achievement (Federal Ministry of Education, 2021).
Guidance and counseling programmes are expected to provide students with academic, vocational, and personal-social support that enhances their learning outcomes. However, evidence indicates that in many public secondary schools, counseling units are either poorly equipped, inadequately staffed, or underutilized. In some schools, professional counselors are unavailable, while counseling responsibilities are assigned to teachers without specialized training, thereby reducing the effectiveness of the services provided (UNESCO, 2021).
Furthermore, many students lack adequate awareness of the benefits of counseling services, resulting in low patronage even where such services exist. Cultural misconceptions, fear of stigmatization, and insufficient administrative support have also limited the utilization of guidance and counseling programmes. Consequently, students often struggle with emotional, behavioural, and academic challenges without receiving the necessary professional intervention required to improve their academic performance (UNICEF, 2022). It is against this backdrop that this study seeks to examine the role of guidance and counseling in improving student academic performance in Ogun State, Nigeria.
1.4 Aim and Objectives of Study
The aim of this study is to examine the role of guidance and counseling in improving student academic performance in Ogun State, Nigeria. The specific objectives of this research are to:
