1.1 Introduction
Online education refers to a method of teaching and learning that is delivered through the internet using digital platforms, enabling students and educators to interact without being physically present in a traditional classroom setting (UNESCO, 2023). It involves the use of tools such as video conferencing, learning management systems, virtual classrooms, and multimedia resources to support academic activities across different locations. In recent years, online education has gained global attention as a flexible and scalable approach to learning, particularly in developing countries where access to educational infrastructure is uneven.
In Nigeria, the growth of online education has been closely linked to the expansion of internet services and mobile connectivity. However, the effectiveness of this system depends largely on the quality and speed of internet access available to users. Fifth generation (5G) internet technology represents a major advancement in wireless communication, offering ultra fast data transfer rates, reduced latency, and the capacity to connect multiple devices simultaneously (ITU, 2023).
As a prelude to other parts of this study, this chapter will discuss the background upon which this study was initiated, the statement of problems that led to this study, the Aim and Objectives of the study. Others are significance of the study, scope of work, research hypothesis and questions, limitation of the study and definition of terms.
1.2 Background of Study
The development of online education has become one of the most significant transformations in the global education sector, largely driven by advancements in information and communication technology (ICT). Online education refers to a structured learning system delivered through digital platforms where teachers and learners interact using internet enabled devices without being physically present in the same location (UNESCO, 2023). According to Anderson and Dron (2019), online learning has evolved from simple content delivery systems into interactive, learner centered environments that depend heavily on stable and high speed internet connectivity (Anderson and Dron, 2019).
In many developed countries, the integration of high speed broadband technologies has significantly improved access to education, enabling students to participate in virtual classrooms, access multimedia resources, and collaborate in real time with peers and instructors. According to the International Telecommunication Union (ITU, 2023), fifth generation (5G) internet technology represents a major leap in mobile connectivity, offering ultra low latency, high bandwidth, and massive device connectivity.
The ITU further reported that 5G is designed to support advanced digital services such as augmented reality learning, virtual laboratories, and real time video streaming, all of which are essential for modern online education systems. In the Nigerian context, the adoption of online education has increased significantly, especially following the disruptions caused by the COVID 19 pandemic, which forced many educational institutions to adopt remote learning models. According to Afolabi and Ojo (2022), the pandemic exposed the weaknesses in Nigeria's digital infrastructure, particularly the lack of reliable internet connectivity and inadequate access to digital learning tools among students and teachers.
According to MTN Nigeria (2024), the company has invested heavily in the deployment of 5G infrastructure in selected parts of the country to enhance digital communication and support emerging technologies. MTN Nigeria reported that its 5G network is designed to improve data transmission speeds and reduce latency, thereby enabling smoother access to online platforms and digital services.
Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC, 2024) stated that, 5G coverage is currently limited to major urban centers, leaving many rural areas dependent on slower 3G and 4G networks. The NCC stated that this uneven distribution of network infrastructure contributes to the persistence of the digital divide in the country. As a result, many students in underserved regions continue to experience difficulties accessing online educational resources. In addition, the cost of internet services remains a major barrier to widespread adoption of online education in Nigeria.
Ibrahim and Bello (2023) stated that, high data costs discourage consistent use of online learning platforms among students, particularly those from low income households. The authors contended that even when internet access is available, affordability issues often limit the frequency and quality of participation in online classes. This study is set against the backdrop of the increasing need to evaluate how 5G internet technology, particularly as deployed by MTN Nigeria, influences the expansion and effectiveness of online education in Nigeria.
1.3 Statement of Problems
Investigation revealed that students and educators experience persistent challenges such as network instability, limited broadband penetration, and high cost of data services, which reduce the effectiveness of online learning platforms. Even though telecommunication providers such as MTN Nigeria have introduced 5G services in selected urban areas, access is still restricted to a small portion of the population, leaving rural and semi urban learners at a disadvantage (NCC, 2024).
Additionally, online education systems in Nigeria often rely on platforms that require strong bandwidth to support video conferencing, real time collaboration, and access to multimedia learning materials. Unfortunately, inadequate network infrastructure affects smooth delivery of these services, leading to interruptions, delays, and poor learning outcomes (Okoro & Ibrahim, 2022).
Furthermore, the introduction of 5G internet by providers such as MTN Nigeria presents a significant opportunity to transform the educational landscape by enabling faster access to digital content, supporting virtual classrooms, and improving overall learning efficiency (MTN Nigeria, 2023). It is against this backdrop that this study seeks to investigate the role of 5G internet in expanding online education in Nigeria.
1.4 Aim and Objectives of Study
The aim of this study is to investigate the role of 5G internet in expanding online education in Nigeria using MTN Nigeria as a case study.
The specific objectives of this study include:
- To examine the extent of 5G internet availability for online education in Nigeria.
- To assess the impact of 5G internet on student participation in online learning.
- To evaluate how 5G internet improves the quality of online education delivery.
- To identify the challenges affecting the adoption of 5G internet in educational institutions.
- To determine the role of MTN Nigeria in supporting 5G based online education services.
1.5 Research Questions
Based on the stated objectives, the study will address the following research questions:
- What is the extent of 5G internet availability for online education in Nigeria?
- How does 5G internet affect student participation in online learning?
- In what ways does 5G internet improve the quality of online education delivery?
- What challenges affect the adoption of 5G internet in educational institutions?
- What role does MTN Nigeria play in supporting 5G based online education services?
1.6 Research Hypotheses
In order to pursue the objective of this study, the following generalized statements have been designed to guide and aids in obtaining the result for the experiment to be conducted. For this work, the null hypothesis will be represented with H0 while the alternative hypothesis will be represented with hypothesis H1.
Hypothesis 1
- H0: There is no significant relationship between 5G internet availability and expansion of online education in Nigeria.
- H1: There is a significant relationship between 5G internet availability and expansion of online education in Nigeria.
Hypothesis 2
- H0: 5G internet does not significantly improve student participation in online learning.
- H1: 5G internet significantly improves student participation in online learning.
Hypothesis 3
- H0: MTN Nigeria does not play a significant role in supporting 5G-based online education services.
- H1: MTN Nigeria plays a significant role in supporting 5G-based online education services.
1.7 Significance of Study
The outcome of this research will provide reliable data on how 5G internet will improve access to online education in Nigeria by enhancing network speed and reducing latency. The study will also help educational institutions improve the integration of advanced internet technologies into teaching and learning processes.
Furthermore, students will benefit from improved access to stable 5G internet which will enhance their participation in online learning and reduce interruptions during virtual classes. In addition, MTN Nigeria will benefit from insights that will help improve its 5G service delivery and expand its contribution to digital education development.
Lastly, the findings will guide government agencies in strengthening policies that will promote digital learning infrastructure development.
1.8 Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study covers the impact of 5G internet on online education delivery, student participation, and learning quality within selected institutions in Lagos State. It focuses specifically on MTN Nigeria's 5G network services and their application in educational environments.
The study does not cover other telecommunications providers or states outside Lagos, even though they may also have relevant 5G deployments.
1.9 Definition of Terms
5G Internet:
5G Internet refers to the fifth generation of mobile network technology designed to provide ultra fast internet speed, low latency, and high capacity connectivity for multiple devices (ITU, 2023). It is used in this study to describe advanced wireless communication systems that support online education activities.
Online Education:
Online Education refers to a learning system that is delivered through digital platforms using internet enabled devices, allowing teachers and students to interact without physical presence (UNESCO, 2023). It includes virtual classrooms, video lectures, and online assessments.
MTN Nigeria:
MTN Nigeria is a leading telecommunications company in Nigeria that provides mobile network services including voice, data, and 5G internet connectivity (MTN Nigeria, 2024). It is used in this study as the case study organization.
Digital Learning:
Digital Learning refers to the use of electronic devices and internet based tools to support teaching and learning processes in educational institutions (Eze & Chukwu, 2023). It includes the use of multimedia, online platforms, and virtual communication tools.
Latency:
Latency refers to the time delay between sending and receiving data over a network, where lower latency improves real time communication quality (ITU, 2023).
