1.1 Introduction
Chemistry is the branch of science that deals with the composition, properties, structure, and changes that matter undergoes. It provides the scientific knowledge required for understanding natural phenomena and serves as a foundation for careers in medicine, engineering, pharmacy, agriculture, and other science-related fields (Brown et al., 2022). As one of the core science subjects offered in secondary schools, Chemistry equips students with problem-solving skills, scientific reasoning, and practical competencies needed for national technological development.
Laboratory exercises refer to planned practical activities in which students carry out experiments, observe chemical reactions, manipulate laboratory equipment, and verify scientific principles under the guidance of a teacher. Laboratory exercises also improve observation, measurement, analytical thinking, and scientific inquiry skills, making the teaching and learning of Chemistry more meaningful (Hofstein & Kind, 2012).
The teaching of Chemistry in science secondary schools requires a balance between theory and practical work because many chemical concepts are better understood through experimentation. Effective laboratory exercises enable students to develop confidence in handling laboratory apparatus, interpreting experimental results, and applying scientific methods to solve problems. Students who participate actively in practical activities are more likely to retain knowledge and perform better academically than those who rely solely on classroom lectures (Abrahams & Millar, 2008).
As a prelude to other parts of this study, this chapter will discuss the background upon which this study was initiated, the statement of problems that led to this study, the aim and objectives of the study. Others are significance of the study, scope of work, research hypothesis and questions, limitation of the study and definition of terms.
1.2 Background of Study
Chemistry is one of the major science subjects taught in secondary schools because it provides learners with the knowledge and practical skills required for understanding the composition, properties, and changes of matter. According to Brown et al. (2022), Chemistry forms the foundation for many professions, including medicine, pharmacy, engineering, agriculture, environmental science, and industrial technology. The subject contributes significantly to scientific literacy and national development by equipping students with analytical thinking, problem-solving abilities, and experimental skills. In Nigeria, Chemistry is a compulsory science subject for students who intend to pursue science-related careers in higher institutions. Its importance has made educators and policymakers place greater attention on improving students' academic performance through effective teaching strategies.
According to the Federal Ministry of Education (2021), science education is expected to promote inquiry, creativity, innovation, and the practical application of scientific knowledge. The national curriculum encourages teachers to combine classroom instruction with practical laboratory activities to enable students to understand scientific concepts through observation and experimentation. Similarly, Hofstein and Kind (2012) reported that laboratory activities provide opportunities for students to investigate scientific phenomena, verify theoretical concepts, and develop practical competencies that cannot be acquired through classroom lectures alone.
Laboratory exercises refer to carefully planned practical activities where students perform experiments using laboratory apparatus, chemicals, and scientific procedures under the supervision of a teacher. According to Abrahams and Millar (2008), practical work enables learners to connect theoretical knowledge with real-life experiences, making abstract concepts easier to understand. In the same vein, Okebukola (2015) asserted that laboratory exercises encourage students to become active participants in the learning process rather than passive recipients of information. Through repeated experimentation, students gain confidence in observing, measuring, recording results, and drawing logical conclusions based on scientific evidence.
The effectiveness of laboratory exercises depends largely on the availability of functional laboratories, adequate equipment, qualified teachers, and sufficient instructional time. According to Hofstein and Lunetta (2004), meaningful laboratory experiences improve students' scientific reasoning, critical thinking, and long-term retention of knowledge. Likewise, Nworgu (2016) stated that practical instruction strengthens students' interest in science subjects because it transforms theoretical ideas into observable experiences.
Students' academic performance in Chemistry is influenced by several interacting factors beyond intelligence alone. According to Biggs (2011), learning outcomes improve when students are actively engaged in meaningful learning experiences. Consistent with this view, Kolb (2015) affirmed that experiential learning enables learners to acquire knowledge through direct experience, reflection, and experimentation. Laboratory exercises therefore provide a practical environment where students learn by doing, making scientific knowledge more meaningful and easier to retain. This study is set against the backdrop of determining the effects of laboratory exercises on science secondary school students' performance in Chemistry.
1.3 Statement of Problems
Investigation revealed that many science secondary school students continue to perform poorly in Chemistry because laboratory exercises are not conducted regularly or effectively in many schools. As a result, many students find it difficult to relate classroom knowledge to practical applications, leading to low interest and weak academic performance in Chemistry (West African Examinations Council [WAEC], 2024). On the other hand, teachers also face challenges in organizing meaningful laboratory activities because of inadequate practical materials, poor laboratory maintenance, and limited training on effective practical instruction.
Furthermore, although several efforts have been made to improve science education in Nigeria, concerns remain about whether regular laboratory exercises significantly influence students' academic performance in Chemistry, particularly among science secondary schools in Kaduna State. It is against this backdrop that this study seeks to examine the effects of laboratory exercises on science secondary school students' performance in Chemistry in Kaduna State, Nigeria.

1.9 Limitations of the Study
During the course of this study, there were some problems encountered which stood as limitations to the research work. Some of the limitations include:
- Time Constraint: The time frame given to accomplish this project was very short due to school academic calendar and it was carried out under pressure which made the researcher not to implement some necessary features.
- Financial Constraint: Insufficient fund tends to impede the efficiency of the researcher in sourcing for the relevant materials, literature or information and in the process of data collection (internet, questionnaire and interview).
