ABSTRACT

Secure email gateway is a cybersecurity solution designed to protect email communication by detecting, filtering, and blocking harmful messages such as phishing and spoofing attacks. The purpose of this study was to implement a secure email gateway with cloud intelligence to block phishing and spoofing threats at Sterling Bank, Lagos State. The outcome of this research was motivated by the increasing risks associated with email-based cyberattacks in banking institutions, where phishing and spoofing activities may expose confidential information and disrupt business operations. Data for the study was collected through structured questionnaires administered to 100 selected respondents from Sterling Bank, Lagos State. The collected data was analyzed using frequency tables, percentages, mean analysis, and chi-square statistical methods for testing the stated hypotheses.

The findings revealed that 36% of respondents strongly agreed and 42% agreed that existing email security measures are available at Sterling Bank. Furthermore, 45% strongly agreed and 38% agreed that secure email gateway technology is effective in blocking malicious emails. The findings also showed that 42% strongly agreed and 41% agreed that cloud intelligence improves real-time threat detection. The hypothesis tests confirmed significant relationships, with chi-square values of 45.52, 44.56, and 49.84 exceeding the critical value of 7.815.

The study concluded that secure email gateway implementation with cloud intelligence provides an effective solution for reducing phishing and spoofing threats at Sterling Bank, Lagos State. The findings indicate that adopting intelligent email security systems improves threat detection, strengthens protection of sensitive information, and supports safer banking communication. Based on the result obtained from this research, it was recommended that The bank should invest in skilled cybersecurity personnel and technical resources that should support effective management, maintenance, and monitoring of secure email gateway systems.

1.1 Introduction

Secure email gateway is a cybersecurity solution designed to monitor, filter, and protect email communication by detecting and preventing malicious messages before they reach users. In modern banking environments, where email communication is essential for internal operations and customer services, secure email gateways provide an important layer of protection against cyber threats. Phishing and spoofing attacks are among the most common email security problems affecting organizations worldwide. Phishing involves the use of fake emails designed to trick users into revealing confidential information, while spoofing occurs when attackers manipulate email identities to appear as trusted individuals or organizations. Cybercriminals according to Federal Bureau of Investigation (2023) frequently use email-based deception techniques to target financial institutions because of the valuable information and financial resources they manage.

As a prelude to other parts of this study, this chapter will discuss the background upon which this study was initiated, the statement of problems that led to this study, the aim and objectives of the study. Others are significance of the study, scope of work, research hypothesis and questions, limitation of the study and definition of terms.

1.2 Background of Study

Secure email gateway refers to a cybersecurity solution that protects email communication by filtering, monitoring, and blocking malicious messages before they reach users. The system is designed to detect harmful attachments, suspicious links, spam messages, phishing attempts, and email impersonation activities that may compromise organizational security. According to Scarfone and Hoffman (2016), email security mechanisms are important components of information protection because email remains one of the most widely used channels for delivering cyber threats. As organizations continue to depend on electronic communication for daily operations, the protection of email systems has become necessary for maintaining confidentiality, integrity, and availability of information.

Cybersecurity threats have continued to increase as attackers develop more sophisticated methods to exploit weaknesses in digital communication systems. According to Whitman and Mattord (2021), cybercriminals often target organizations through social engineering techniques that manipulate users into providing sensitive information or performing unsafe actions. Similarly, Hadnagy (2018) reported that social engineering attacks, including phishing, are successful because they take advantage of human behavior rather than relying only on technical weaknesses.

Phishing attacks involve the use of fraudulent emails that appear legitimate with the intention of deceiving recipients into revealing confidential information or accessing malicious content. According to Chiew, Yong, and Tan (2018), phishing remains one of the most common cyber threats because attackers continuously modify their strategies to bypass traditional security measures. In the same vein, Alabdan (2020) stated that phishing attacks against financial institutions create serious risks because they may result in financial losses, identity theft, and unauthorized access to critical systems. These challenges indicate the need for improved email security approaches that are capable of detecting both known and emerging threats.

Spoofing attacks have also become a significant challenge in email communication because attackers can manipulate sender information to make fraudulent messages appear as if they originate from trusted sources. According to Kucherawy and Hoffman (2014), email authentication technologies such as Sender Policy Framework (SPF), DomainKeys Identified Mail (DKIM), and Domain-based Message Authentication, Reporting, and Conformance (DMARC) assist organizations in reducing email identity fraud. Furthermore, Proofpoint (2023) reported that attackers frequently use impersonation techniques to target businesses and financial organizations, making advanced email protection systems necessary for preventing unauthorized communication (Proofpoint, 2023).

The development of cloud computing has introduced new opportunities for improving cybersecurity through real-time monitoring, automated threat detection, and access to updated security intelligence. According to Mell and Grance (2011), cloud computing provides scalable resources that allow organizations to deploy flexible and efficient technology solutions. Likewise, Subashini and Kavitha (2011) asserted that cloud-based security solutions provide organizations with improved capabilities for managing information security challenges through centralized protection and continuous updates. Cloud intelligence in email security enables systems to analyze large volumes of email data, identify suspicious patterns, and respond quickly to potential attacks.

Artificial intelligence and threat intelligence have further improved the effectiveness of modern email security gateways. According to Buczak and Guven (2016), machine learning techniques support cybersecurity by identifying abnormal activities and detecting patterns associated with malicious behavior. Moreover, Sarker (2021) affirmed that artificial intelligence-based security systems improve threat detection by processing large amounts of data and making faster security decisions compared with traditional approaches. These technologies provide organizations with stronger protection against evolving phishing and spoofing techniques that may not be easily detected through conventional filtering methods.

This study is set against the backdrop of the increasing need for advanced email protection systems that combine secure email gateway technology with cloud intelligence to effectively detect and block phishing and spoofing threats within financial institutions, using Sterling Bank, Lagos State, as a case study.

1.3 Statement of Problems

Investigation revealed that email-based cyber threats such as phishing and spoofing attacks remain major security challenges affecting financial institutions, as attackers often use deceptive messages to steal sensitive information, gain unauthorized access, and conduct fraudulent activities. Also, many banking organizations still experience difficulties in identifying sophisticated email attacks because cybercriminals continuously improve their techniques and use advanced methods to bypass existing security controls. Additionally, the increasing dependence on digital communication within banks has increased the need for stronger email protection systems that are intelligent, automated, and capable of detecting threats in real time.

Furthermore, some existing email security approaches rely heavily on predefined rules, which may not effectively identify new phishing patterns, fake sender identities, and other emerging email-based attacks. On the other hand, Sterling Bank and other financial institutions in Lagos State require secure email systems that protect confidential banking information and maintain customer trust. It is against this backdrop that this study seeks to implement a secure email gateway with cloud intelligence to block phishing and spoofing threats at Sterling Bank, Lagos State.
