1.0 Introduction
1.1 Background of Study
Industrial Training (I.T.) has its roots in the broader field of vocational and technical education, which emerged as a response to the increasing need for skilled labor during the industrial revolution of the 18th and 19th centuries. Initially, the emphasis was on apprenticeships and on-the-job training to prepare individuals for specific trades and industries. Over time, the integration of formal education with practical experience became a recognized strategy for fostering a workforce that is both knowledgeable and skilled (Adeyemi & Olufemi, 2018).
In Nigeria, Industrial Training gained prominence in the early 1970s with the establishment of the Industrial Training Fund (ITF) under Decree No. 47 of 1971. The ITF was tasked with promoting skill acquisition and ensuring that students in higher institutions received practical training relevant to their academic pursuits. The introduction of the Students Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES) in 1973 marked a significant step in formalizing I.T. programs. SIWES aimed to address the gaps between theoretical knowledge and practical application, ensuring that graduates were better prepared for the labor market (ITF, 2021).
For Higher National Diploma (HND) students, particularly those in their first year (HND I), Industrial Training serves as a platform to gain hands-on experience in their respective fields. The program is structured to provide exposure to industry operations, enhance technical skills, and foster professional development. According to Oladipo et al. (2020), HND I students benefit significantly from the program as it introduces them to the practical challenges and opportunities within their chosen careers.
Industrial Training (I.T.) is an integral component of technical and vocational education, particularly in polytechnics and higher institutions that offer Higher National Diploma (HND) programs. In Nigeria, Industrial Training is organized by the Industrial Training Fund (ITF) and is mandatory for HND I students across various disciplines. The program is structured to expose students to real-world practices and operational methodologies within their chosen fields. Through this exposure, students not only acquire practical skills but also develop professional attitudes, work ethics, and adaptability. As noted by Okonkwo et al. (2021), such experiences significantly contribute to the employability of graduates by enhancing their competencies and familiarity with industry trends.
Despite its recognized importance, the effectiveness of I.T. in achieving its objectives has been a subject of debate among educators, students, and employers. Concerns often revolve around the adequacy of placements, supervision, and the extent to which students can align their academic knowledge with industrial demands. Previous studies, such as that by Bello and Akinlade (2020), highlight variations in the experiences of students, with some benefiting immensely while others face challenges due to limited industry support or lack of proper training facilities.
Industrial Training (I.T.) is a critical component of the Higher National Diploma (HND) program, designed to bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical application. It equips students with hands-on experience, enabling them to adapt to real-world professional environments and fostering skill development essential for their respective fields. This training is particularly crucial for HND I students, as it forms the foundation for their technical expertise and professional growth.
Therefore, in Nigeria where the research was carried out, the activities that was conducted is to analyze the effects of Industrial Training on HND I students, focusing on key areas such as skill acquisition, career readiness, and academic improvement.
1.2 Statement of Problems
Investigation revealed that there is inconsistency in the quality of training provided. Some students are placed in organizations that lack the facilities or capacity to offer relevant practical exposure, which undermines the core objectives of I.T. (Oladipo & Adebayo, 2021). Additionally, supervision and mentorship during I.T. is an area of concern. The absence of proper monitoring by academic institutions and industry supervisors affects the learning process. Many students report minimal guidance during their training, which impacts their ability to fully understand and engage with workplace operations (Okonkwo & Bello, 2019).
Furthermore, the lack of standardized evaluation metrics for assessing the outcomes of I.T. is a significant issue. Institutions often rely on subjective assessments that do not capture the full impact of the training on skill acquisition, career preparedness, and academic growth. As noted by Adebayo and Sanni (2022), this limitation makes it difficult to identify areas for improvement in the program. It is against the backdrop that this study seeks to address these problems by evaluating the Effects of Industrial Training (I.T.) on HND I Students.
1.3 Aim and Objectives of Study
The aim of this study is to statistically analyze the effects of Industrial Training (I.T.) on HND I students. The specific objectives of this study are:
- To evaluate the impact of Industrial Training on the practical skills acquired by HND I students.
- To assess the contribution of I.T. to the career readiness of HND I students.
- To analyze the relationship between Industrial Training and the academic performance of HND I students.
- To identify challenges faced by students during their Industrial Training program.
- To provide recommendations for improving the implementation and effectiveness of Industrial Training for HND I students.
1.5 Research Questions
Based on the stated objectives, the following research questions guide this study:
- How does Industrial Training influence the practical skills acquired by HND I students?
- In what ways does Industrial Training contribute to the career readiness of HND I students?

- What challenges do HND I students face during their Industrial Training program?

1.6 Research Hypothesis
Based on the stated objectives, the following hypotheses are proposed for this study:
Hypothesis One
- H0: The challenges faced during Industrial Training does not significantly affect its effectiveness for HND I students.
- H1: The challenges faced during Industrial Training significantly affect its effectiveness for HND I students.
Hypothesis Two
- H0: Industrial Training has no significant effect on the practical skills, career readiness, and academic performance of HND I students.
- H1: Industrial Training has significant effect on the practical skills, career readiness, and academic performance of HND I students.
1.7 Significance of Study
The outcome of this research will serve as a resource for institutions, helping them align their curricula with industry standards to better prepare students for the workforce. Furthermore, employers will benefit, as the research study will reveal how well students meet industry expectations during their training, thereby identifying areas where additional support is needed.
For students, the study will shed light on how I.T. contributes to their professional development and identify challenges that need to be addressed to maximize the program's benefits. It will also help educational institutions understand the effectiveness of their current I.T. programs, enabling them to align curricula with industry standards and better prepare students for professional demands.
Lastly, this study will contribute to improving the overall effectiveness of Industrial Training programs, ensuring they remain relevant in equipping students with the skills and experiences required for successful careers.
1.8 Scope and Limitation of the Study
This study focuses on the statistical analysis of the effects of Industrial Training (I.T.) on HND I students within Ogun State, Nigeria.
The research will specifically target students from polytechnics and other higher institutions offering Higher National Diploma (HND) programs, with particular attention to those affiliated with companies and organizations participating in the Students Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES).
Limitation of the Study
One significant limitation of this study was the issue of insufficient data, as there were challenges in gathering comprehensive and reliable information from all the intended sources. The data collection process was hindered by frequent power failures, which affected the efficiency of research activities, particularly when working with electronic tools for data gathering and analysis.
Additionally, delays from respondents, especially industry supervisors and students, were encountered during the data collection phase, which slowed down the process and limited the sample size. Financial constraints further impacted the study, as limited funds restricted the ability to reach a larger number of participants or access certain resources necessary for the research.
Time constraints also posed a limitation, as the study had to be completed within a specific academic period, leading to limited time for in-depth data collection and analysis. These factors collectively affected the overall scope and depth of the study, potentially impacting the generalizability of the findings.
1.9 Definition of Terms
Industrial Training (I.T.):
Industrial Training (I.T.) refers to a structured program that provides students with the opportunity to gain hands-on experience in real-world work environments. It is often a mandatory component of academic curricula in higher education institutions, designed to bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical application in various industries (Adebayo & Sanni, 2022).
HND I Students:
HND I students are those enrolled in the first year of the Higher National Diploma (HND) program. The HND is a vocational and technical qualification offered by polytechnics and similar institutions, with the first-year students usually engaging in practical training as part of their academic journey (Ajayi et al., 2020).
Statistical Analysis:
Statistical analysis involves the use of mathematical techniques to collect, review, and interpret data. In this study, statistical analysis will be used to assess the impact of Industrial Training on HND I students, focusing on variables such as skill acquisition, academic performance, and career readiness (Oladipo & Adebayo, 2021).
Skill Acquisition:
Skill acquisition refers to the process by which students learn and develop practical abilities that are essential for their professional roles. In the context of Industrial Training, it involves the enhancement of technical and soft skills through direct exposure to industry-specific tasks and environments (Okonkwo & Bello, 2019).
Career Readiness:
Career readiness is the level of preparedness a student has to enter the workforce upon graduation. It includes a combination of technical skills, professional behaviors, and the ability to apply academic knowledge in a practical setting (Adebayo & Sanni, 2022).
Academic Performance:
Academic performance refers to the results or outcomes of students' educational efforts, typically measured by grades, assessments, and achievements in the classroom. This term in the context of the study will explore how Industrial Training influences students' academic success (Ajayi et al., 2020).
