ABSTRACT


Sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) are infections transmitted mainly through sexual contact and remain a major public health concern affecting different population groups. The purpose of this study is to statistically analyze reported cases of sexually transmitted diseases in order to determine prevalence, trends, distribution, and relationships with demographic factors. The motivation for this research is based on the increasing number of reported STD cases, variations in demographic occurrence, and the need for reliable statistical evidence to support health planning and intervention.

Data were collected from hospital records and health surveillance reports using a structured extraction guide covering reported STD cases within the study area. The findings showed gonorrhoea had the highest cases with 68 (34.0%), followed by chlamydia 42 (21.0%) and syphilis 30 (15.0%), while hepatitis B recorded 6 (3.0%). Total cases increased from 24 (12.0%) in 2021 to 60 (30.0%) in 2025. Furthermore, females recorded 108 (54.0%) cases compared to males 92 (46.0%), and age 25–34 had the highest frequency of 74 (37.0%). Additionally, chi-square and correlation results confirmed significant differences and relationships among variables.

The outcome of this research shows that sexually transmitted diseases are significantly prevalent with an increasing trend and strong demographic influence, indicating the need for continuous monitoring and targeted interventions. Based on the result obtained, it was recommended that health workers should ensure proper documentation and reporting of sexually transmitted disease cases in order to improve the accuracy of statistical data used for planning and decision-making.



1.1 Introduction

Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STDs), also known as Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs), are infections that are primarily spread through sexual contact, including vaginal, anal, and oral intercourse. They are caused by various microorganisms such as bacteria, viruses, and parasites, and may also be transmitted from mother to child during pregnancy, childbirth, or breastfeeding (World Health Organization [WHO], 2025). Common sexually transmitted diseases include gonorrhoea, syphilis, chlamydia, herpes simplex virus infection, human papillomavirus (HPV), hepatitis B, and Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) infection.

Sexually transmitted diseases remain a major public health concern across the world because of their high prevalence and the serious health complications associated with them. According to the World Health Organization, more than one million sexually transmitted infections are acquired daily worldwide, with hundreds of millions of new infections occurring annually among individuals aged 15 to 49 years (WHO, 2025). Many of these infections are asymptomatic, making early detection and treatment difficult and contributing to their continuous spread.

This chapter will address the background information that motivated this study, the challenges that prompted it, its aim, and its objectives as a preface to subsequent sections of the study. 1.2 Background of Study

Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STDs), also referred to as Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs), are among the most common communicable diseases affecting people worldwide. According to the World Health Organization (2025), sexually transmitted infections are infections transmitted predominantly through sexual contact and continue to represent a major public health concern due to their widespread prevalence and associated health complications. These infections are caused by bacteria, viruses, and parasites and include diseases such as gonorrhoea, syphilis, chlamydia, genital herpes, hepatitis B, human papillomavirus (HPV), and Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV). The increasing incidence of these diseases has generated significant concern among healthcare professionals, researchers, and policymakers because of their impact on individual health and national healthcare systems.

According to the World Health Organization (2025), more than one million sexually transmitted infections are acquired every day globally, while hundreds of millions of new cases are reported annually. This situation demonstrates that sexually transmitted diseases remain a persistent challenge despite advancements in medical treatment and disease prevention programmes. The widespread occurrence of these infections has been attributed to factors such as unsafe sexual practices, inadequate access to healthcare services, poor awareness of preventive measures, multiple sexual partnerships, and social stigma associated with sexual health issues. These factors have continued to facilitate the transmission of sexually transmitted diseases across different populations and geographical regions.

Similarly, Holmes, Sparling, Stamm, Piot, Wasserheit, Corey, Cohen and Watts (2008) asserted that sexually transmitted diseases have remained a significant cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide, particularly among young adults and sexually active populations. The researchers contended that the burden of sexually transmitted diseases extends beyond immediate infection because untreated cases often result in severe reproductive and maternal health complications. The persistence of these diseases has therefore necessitated continuous surveillance and epidemiological studies aimed at understanding their patterns and distribution within populations.

In the same vein, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (2024) reported that sexually transmitted diseases continue to increase in many countries despite ongoing public health interventions. The report stated that delayed diagnosis, asymptomatic infections, and inadequate treatment-seeking behaviour contribute significantly to the sustained transmission of these diseases. The existence of asymptomatic cases poses a major challenge to disease control efforts because infected individuals may unknowingly spread infections to others.

Rowley, Vander Hoorn, Korenromp, Low, Unemo, Abu-Raddad and colleagues (2019) reported that millions of new infections involving chlamydia, gonorrhoea, syphilis, and trichomoniasis occur annually across the globe. The researchers affirmed that the high prevalence of these infections highlights the need for evidence-based public health policies and effective intervention strategies. Reliable statistical information on disease occurrence is therefore necessary for identifying vulnerable groups, monitoring disease trends, and evaluating the effectiveness of control measures.

Correspondingly, Garnett (2002) contended that effective disease control depends largely on the availability of reliable epidemiological data. According to the researcher, the analysis of reported disease cases provides critical insights into transmission dynamics and assists public health authorities in allocating resources appropriately. Without proper statistical evaluation of reported cases, efforts aimed at reducing disease prevalence may be less effective because interventions may not adequately target populations at greatest risk.

This study is set against the backdrop of the persistent occurrence of sexually transmitted diseases and the growing need for statistical evidence to guide interventions aimed at reducing their prevalence and associated health consequences.


1.3 Statement of Problems

Investigation revealed that sexually transmitted diseases continue to constitute a significant public health challenge despite the various awareness programmes, preventive measures, and treatment interventions implemented across different parts of the world. Reports from the World Health Organization indicate that more than one million sexually transmitted infections are acquired daily, suggesting that the spread of these diseases remains a major concern (WHO, 2025).

It was further revealed that many sexually transmitted diseases are often asymptomatic during the early stages of infection. As a result, many infected individuals remain unaware of their health status and may unknowingly transmit the infections to others. This situation contributes to underreporting, delayed treatment, and the continuous spread of sexually transmitted diseases within communities (WHO, 2025).

Furthermore, sexually transmitted diseases are associated with several health complications, including infertility, ectopic pregnancy, pelvic inflammatory disease, neonatal infections, certain cancers, and an increased risk of HIV acquisition and transmission. These complications not only affect the quality of life of infected individuals but also place a considerable burden on healthcare systems and economic resources (WHO, 2025). It is against this backdrop that this study seeks to statistically analyze reported cases of sexually transmitted diseases.


1.4 Purpose of the Study

The purpose of this study is to statistically analyze reported cases of sexually transmitted diseases in order to determine their pattern, distribution, prevalence, and trend within the study area and to provide information that will support effective public health planning, disease prevention, and control strategies.


1.5 Aim and Objectives of Study

The aim of this study is to carry out a statistical analysis of reported cases of sexually transmitted diseases. In achieving this aim, the following specific objectives were laid out as follows:

  1. To determine the prevalence of reported cases of sexually transmitted diseases within the study area.
  2. To examine the trend of reported sexually transmitted disease cases over a specified period.
  3. To analyze the distribution of reported sexually transmitted disease cases based on demographic characteristics.
  4. To identify patterns and variations in reported sexually transmitted disease cases.
  5. To evaluate the statistical relationship between demographic factors and reported sexually transmitted disease cases.

1.6 Research Questions

The study came up with research questions so as to be able to ascertain the above stated objectives. The specific research questions for the study are stated below as follows:

  • What is the prevalence of reported cases of sexually transmitted diseases within the study area?
  • What trend exists in reported sexually transmitted disease cases over the specified period?
  • How are reported sexually transmitted disease cases distributed across demographic characteristics?
  • What patterns and variations exist in reported sexually transmitted disease cases?
  • What relationship exists between demographic factors and reported sexually transmitted disease cases?

1.7 Research Hypotheses

In order to pursue the objective of this study, the following generalized statements have been designed to guide and aids in obtaining the result for the experiment to be conducted. For this work, the null hypothesis will be represented with H0 while the alternative hypothesis will be represented with hypothesis H1.

Hypothesis One

  • H0: There is no significant prevalence of reported cases of sexually transmitted diseases within the study area.
  • H1: There is a significant prevalence of reported cases of sexually transmitted diseases within the study area.

Hypothesis Two

  • H0: There is no significant trend in reported sexually transmitted disease cases over the specified period.
  • H1: There is a significant trend in reported sexually transmitted disease cases over the specified period.

Hypothesis Three

  • H0: There is no significant difference in the distribution of reported sexually transmitted disease cases across demographic characteristics.
  • H1: There is a significant difference in the distribution of reported sexually transmitted disease cases across demographic characteristics.

Hypothesis Four

  • H0: There are no significant patterns and variations in reported sexually transmitted disease cases.
  • H1: There are significant patterns and variations in reported sexually transmitted disease cases.

Hypothesis Five

  • H0: There is no significant relationship between demographic factors and reported sexually transmitted disease cases.
  • H1: There is a significant relationship between demographic factors and reported sexually transmitted disease cases.

1.8 Significance of Study

The outcome of this research will provide statistical information on the pattern and trend of reported cases of sexually transmitted diseases, thereby contributing to the existing body of knowledge on disease occurrence and distribution. This research will also assist healthcare institutions in understanding variations in reported sexually transmitted disease cases for improved disease surveillance and record management.

Furthermore, the result obtained from this research will provide public health authorities with reliable data required for planning and implementing disease prevention and control programmes.

Lastly, the outcome of this research will serve as a useful source of information for policymakers responsible for developing strategies aimed at reducing the prevalence of sexually transmitted diseases. It will also provide researchers and students with relevant empirical data for further studies related to sexually transmitted diseases, epidemiology, and public health statistics.


1.9 Scope of Study

This study focuses on the statistical analysis of reported cases of sexually transmitted diseases in Anambra State, Nigeria. The study covers reported cases obtained from the Anambra State Ministry of Health and selected government healthcare facilities within the state.


1.10 Limitations of the Study

A study of this nature is bound to experience certain problems as such the constraints imposed on the research include:

  1. Time allocated for the completion of the study was limited due to academic requirements and deadlines associated with the research work.
  2. Financial resources available for conducting the study were limited, which affected transportation, data collection, and access to some relevant materials.
  3. Access to some relevant records was limited because certain health facilities regarded disease information as confidential. The study was also restricted to available reported cases obtained from selected healthcare institutions.
