    ABSTRACT

    Teacher motivation refers to the factors that encourage teachers to remain committed, interested, and productive in their teaching responsibilities. The purpose of this study was to examine teachers' perception of motivation as a measure of increasing efficiency in the teaching profession. The study was motivated by concerns about inadequate remuneration, poor working conditions, heavy workload, limited recognition, promotion challenges, and insufficient professional development opportunities among teachers. Data were collected from 150 selected teachers using a structured questionnaire. The instrument covered teachers' level of motivation, motivational factors, teaching efficiency, challenges affecting motivation, and possible measures for improvement. The collected data were analyzed using frequencies, percentages, chi-square, t-test, and Pearson Product Moment Correlation at a 0.05 level of significance.

    The findings showed that 71 (47.3%) respondents reported high motivation, while 57 (38.0%) reported moderate motivation. Furthermore, 79 (52.7%) reported that motivational factors had high influence on efficiency. Also, 84 (56.0%) reported a strong relationship between motivation and teaching efficiency, with a correlation coefficient of 0.68. The findings further showed that 86 (57.3%) experienced high motivational challenges, while 91 (60.7%) considered the proposed improvement measures highly effective. The outcome of this research indicates that motivation is an important factor in increasing teaching efficiency. The study concludes that regular remuneration, recognition, promotion, professional development, supportive leadership, and improved working conditions are important for sustaining teachers' motivation and improving their efficiency. Based on the findings, it was recommended that school authorities should improve teachers' working conditions by providing adequate teaching materials, classroom facilities, and other resources required for effective teaching.

    1.1 Introduction

    Motivation refers to the internal and external factors that encourage an individual to act, work toward a goal, and sustain effort. In the teaching profession, teacher motivation involves the conditions, rewards, recognition, support, and personal interests that encourage teachers to perform their duties effectively. Motivation may be intrinsic, arising from personal satisfaction and interest in teaching, or extrinsic, resulting from factors such as salary, promotion, recognition, job security, and good working conditions (Ryan & Deci, 2020). Teacher efficiency, on the other hand, refers to the ability of teachers to perform their professional responsibilities effectively with appropriate use of time, skills, knowledge, and available resources.

    As a prelude to other parts of this study, this chapter will discuss the background upon which this study was initiated, the statement of problems that led to this study, the aim and objectives of the study. Others are significance of the study, scope of work, research hypothesis and questions, limitation of the study and definition of terms.

    1.2 Background of Study

    Historically, teacher motivation is closely connected with the development of the teaching profession itself. In the early development of formal education, particularly during the missionary period in Nigeria, teaching was largely viewed as a service to the community and the church. Teachers were expected to demonstrate commitment, discipline, and moral conduct, while material rewards were relatively limited. Following the expansion of formal education, the number of teachers and schools increased, creating a greater need for organised teacher welfare and professional representation. Ozano (2013) reported that the formation of the Nigeria Union of Teachers in 1931 marked an important stage in the development of the teaching profession. The union emerged partly in response to the working conditions experienced by teachers during the colonial period. Issues relating to teachers' welfare, professional status, remuneration, and recognition gradually became important concerns.

    Ryan and Deci (2020) reported that motivation refers to the forces that stimulate individuals to initiate, direct, and sustain behaviour toward achieving particular goals. In the teaching profession, motivation involves the personal and workplace factors that encourage teachers to perform their duties with commitment and interest. Teacher efficiency refers to the ability of teachers to perform their professional responsibilities effectively, including lesson preparation, classroom instruction, assessment of learners, classroom management, and participation in school activities. Thus, motivation is considered an important factor in determining how teachers approach their responsibilities and how effectively they perform them.

    Similarly, teacher motivation has become an important issue because teachers occupy a central position in the educational system. They are responsible for translating educational policies and curriculum objectives into actual classroom practices. A teacher who is committed and motivated is more likely to prepare lessons properly, attend classes regularly, interact positively with learners, assess students' progress, and make efforts to improve teaching methods. Olamoyegun, Okolo, and Ogunode (2023) reported that motivation is associated with improved teachers' job performance and students' academic performance in Nigerian post-basic education. This suggests that the condition of the teacher is an important consideration when efforts are made to improve the quality of education. In the same vein, motivation is not only about financial rewards but also includes the psychological and professional conditions that make teachers feel valued and willing to contribute to school development.

    Teachers' perception of motivation is significant because teachers may respond differently to various motivational measures. Some teachers may place greater value on salary and other financial benefits, while others may be more influenced by recognition, promotion, professional growth, participation in decision-making, or a supportive relationship with school administrators. Akinsuroju and Ojeniyi (2021) found that interpersonal relationships between principals and teachers, participation in decision-making, and delegation of responsibilities were significantly related to teachers' job performance in public secondary schools in Ogun State.

    Intrinsic motivation occurs when an individual performs an activity because of personal interest, satisfaction, enjoyment, or a sense of purpose. Teachers who derive satisfaction from helping learners, developing their abilities, and contributing to society may remain committed even when external rewards are limited. Oladiji (2025) reported a significant relationship between teachers' intrinsic motivation and job performance among public secondary school teachers in Ogun State. Supporting this position, Ryan and Deci (2020) stated that intrinsic motivation is associated with stronger engagement and sustained participation in meaningful activities. The study is set against the backdrop of the need to examine teachers' perception of motivation as a measure of increasing efficiency in the teaching profession.

    1.3 Statement of Problems

    Investigation revealed that teachers' motivation is an important factor in improving their efficiency and commitment to teaching. Teachers who receive fair recognition, supportive working conditions, adequate remuneration, and opportunities for professional development are more likely to show interest and dedication to their duties. On the other hand, poor motivation may lead to low morale, reduced commitment, absenteeism, and weak job performance, which may negatively affect the quality of teaching and learning (Akinwumi, 2020).

    Additionally, some teachers experience challenges such as inadequate incentives, heavy workloads, limited recognition, poor working conditions, and insufficient opportunities for career growth. Furthermore, when teachers feel that their efforts are not valued, their willingness to put extra effort into lesson preparation, classroom management, and other professional responsibilities may decline. It is against this backdrop that this study seeks to examine teachers' perception of motivation as a measure of increasing efficiency in the teaching profession.

    1.4 Aim and Objectives of Study

    The aim of this study is to examine teachers' perception of motivation as a measure of increasing efficiency in the teaching profession.

    The specific objectives of this research are to:

    1. Examine the level of motivation among teachers in the selected organization;
    2. Identify the major motivational factors that influence teachers' efficiency;
    3. Determine the relationship between teachers' motivation and their teaching efficiency;
    4. Examine the challenges affecting effective motivation of teachers; and
    5. Determine measures for improving teachers' motivation and efficiency in the teaching profession.

    1.5 Research Questions
