1.0 Introduction
1.1 Background of Study
The relationship between music and academic performance has been an area of significant interest within educational psychology. Over the years, researchers have sought to understand whether music can enhance or impede students' academic abilities. Music, as a form of auditory stimulation, has the potential to influence various cognitive processes, including memory, attention, and problem-solving skills (Hallam, 2010). The impact of music on academic performance is particularly relevant in the context of students' learning environments, where external stimuli such as background music can either support or disrupt academic tasks.
Early studies suggested that music, especially classical music, could improve cognitive functions and promote concentration, potentially benefiting students' performance on tasks requiring sustained attention and memory (Rauscher, Shaw, & Ky, 1993). This is known as the "Mozart effect," which posits that listening to Mozart's music may lead to an improvement in certain types of mental tasks, such as spatial-temporal reasoning (Rauscher et al., 1993). However, this theory has been contested, with subsequent research indicating mixed results (Furnham & Bradley, 1997). Music's effects on academic performance may vary depending on the type of music, the student's personal preferences, and the nature of the academic task. For instance, instrumental music has often been linked to improved performance in subjects requiring focus and concentration, while lyrical music may be less conducive to learning, as the lyrics could interfere with cognitive processing (Krauss, 2017). Furthermore, students' individual differences, such as their sensitivity to music and their familiarity with the task, may also play a crucial role in determining how music affects academic performance.
The influence of music on academic performance has garnered significant attention in educational research. Studies have shown that music, when incorporated into the learning environment, can have both positive and negative effects on students' academic performance, depending on various factors such as the type of music, the task being performed, and the individual preferences of students (Hallam, 2010). While some researchers suggest that background music can enhance concentration and memory retention, others argue that it can serve as a distraction and hinder cognitive processing (Krauss, 2017). The effect of music on academic performance is a topic of growing interest, as educators and psychologists explore how music could be effectively integrated into the learning process to boost students' performance.
Music, particularly classical music, has been proposed as a tool for creating a conducive learning environment, with studies indicating improvements in focus and problem-solving skills (Rauscher, Shaw, & Ky, 1993). On the other hand, other studies suggest that contemporary or more upbeat music can lead to reduced academic performance by dividing attention (Furnham & Bradley, 1997).
Therefore, in Nigeria where the research was carried out, the activities that was conducted is to know the effects of music on academic performance of students.
1.2 Statement of Problems
Investigation revealed that the individual differences among students, such as their personal preferences for certain types of music, complicate the understanding of how music influences learning outcomes. What works for one student may not be effective for another, depending on their familiarity with the material, their mood, and their ability to multitask. The diversity in student responses to music underscores the need for a deeper investigation into how music interacts with various cognitive processes and affects academic performance.
Furthermore, despite the numerous studies conducted over the years, there is still no clear consensus on whether music improves or detracts from students' academic achievements. As music becomes an increasingly common feature in classrooms and study spaces, understanding its true impact is crucial for creating environments that maximize learning potential. This study seeks to address these conflicting findings by exploring how different types of music influence academic performance, providing valuable insights for educators and students alike.
1.3 Aim and Objectives of Study
The aim of this study is to investigate the effects of music on the academic performance of students. The objectives of the study are as follows:
- To examine the impact of classical music on students' academic performance, particularly in tasks requiring concentration and problem-solving.
- To assess the influence of contemporary and lyrical music on students' ability to focus and retain information during study sessions.
- To determine whether personal preferences for certain types of music affect students' academic performance.
- To explore whether the presence of background music improves or hinders students' performance in different academic tasks.
- To evaluate the role of music in reducing academic stress and promoting a positive learning environment for students.
- To provide recommendations on how music can be strategically incorporated into educational settings to improve academic outcomes.
1.4 Research Questions
Based on the stated objectives, the following research questions can be formulated:

1.5 Research Hypothesis
In order to pursue the objective of this study, the following generalized statements have been designed to guide and aids in obtaining the result for the experiment to be conducted. For this work, the null hypothesis will be represented with H0 while the alternative hypothesis will be represented with hypothesis H1.
Hypothesis One
- H0: Classical music negatively influences students' academic performance, enhancing their ability to concentrate and solve problems
- H1: Classical music positively influences students' academic performance, enhancing their ability to concentrate and solve problems
Hypothesis Two
- H0: Music does not reduce academic stress and contributes to a more positive and effective learning environment for students.

1.6 Significance of Study
The findings will be crucial for informing educational practices, especially in the context of how music can be strategically incorporated into study environments to optimize learning. If the study demonstrates positive effects, it will encourage educators to create environments that integrate music in ways that support student performance. Conversely, if music is found to hinder academic performance, the study will guide educators in avoiding its use during critical learning periods.
Additionally, this study will offer students a better understanding of how music might impact their individual academic achievements, allowing them to make informed decisions about incorporating music into their study routines. Overall, the research will provide both theoretical and practical contributions to the field of education, ultimately helping to improve academic performance in diverse learning environments.
1.7 Scope of the Study
The scope of this study will focus on the effects of music on the academic performance of students within the context of secondary schools in Lagos State, Nigeria. The research study will specifically target students in both public and private secondary schools, ensuring a diverse sample that reflects varying socioeconomic backgrounds and educational environments.
The research will examine how different genres of music, such as classical, contemporary, and lyrical music, influence students' performance in subjects like mathematics, science, and language arts.
1.8 Limitations of the Study
The limitations of this study were influenced by several factors that impacted the research process.
- Delays in Response from Respondents: The research study was impacted by delays from respondents, with some participants taking longer than expected to complete surveys or participate in interviews. This delay hindered the timely completion of data collection and extended the overall duration of the study.
- Financial Constraints: Limited funding restricted the scope of the study, particularly in terms of reaching a larger, more diverse sample of students. The tight budget also affected the resources available for data analysis and the ability to conduct in-depth research over an extended period.
- Time Constraints: Time constraints further limited the study's ability to capture long-term effects of music on academic performance, as the research was conducted within a short timeframe.
1.9 Definition of Terms
Academic Performance:
Academic performance refers to the extent to which students achieve their educational goals, often measured by grades, test scores, and overall achievement in subjects like mathematics, sciences, and language arts (Zimmerman, 2002). It reflects a student's ability to understand, retain, and apply knowledge in various academic settings.
Music:
Music is an art form and cultural activity that involves organized sound, often consisting of elements such as melody, harmony, rhythm, and timbre. It can be instrumental or include lyrics, and is experienced in various genres, such as classical, contemporary, and lyrical (Levitin, 2006). In this study, music refers to background music played during study sessions or classroom activities.
Classical Music:
Classical music refers to a genre of music that originated in Western traditions, characterized by structured compositions and instrumental arrangements. It often includes works by composers like Bach, Mozart, and Beethoven and is believed to promote relaxation, concentration, and cognitive function (Schellenberg, 2005).
Contemporary Music:
Contemporary music encompasses modern genres, including pop, rock, jazz, and electronic music, and is typically defined by more recent trends and styles. It is often associated with current popular culture and has varying effects on emotional states and cognitive tasks (North & Hargreaves, 2008).
Lyrical Music:
Lyrical music is music that includes vocal lyrics, often in the form of songs. The lyrics in this genre tend to convey emotions, stories, or messages that can either enhance or disrupt concentration depending on the listener's engagement with the words (Thompson et al., 2001).
