ABSTRACT


This study investigates The Impact of Agricultural and Environmental Engineering on Water Resource Management in Nigeria, focusing on the effectiveness of existing systems, the role of engineering interventions, environmental challenges, and strategies for improvement. A total of 200 respondents participated in the study, providing insights into the current state of irrigation and water management practices, as well as perceptions of engineering solutions. The findings revealed that only 10% of respondents rated the existing irrigation and water management systems as very effective, 25% as effective, while 30% perceived them as moderately effective. On the other hand, 25% and 10% of respondents viewed the systems as ineffective and very ineffective, respectively. Regarding the role of Agricultural and Environmental Engineering in optimizing water usage, 40% considered it significant, 30% very significant, and 20% moderately significant.

The result further revealed the environmental challenges affecting water resources were identified, with soil erosion (25%), drought and irregular rainfall (22.5%), deforestation (20%), flooding (17.5%), and pollution (15%) being the most pressing. Engineering interventions were seen as highly effective in reducing water wastage and environmental degradation, with 42.5% rating them as effective and 27.5% as very effective. Strategies for improvement included adoption of modern irrigation technologies (30%), watershed and soil conservation measures (25%), construction of retention ponds and dams (22.5%), use of remote sensing and monitoring technologies (15%), and training for stakeholders (7.5%).

The outcome of this research indicates that Agricultural and Environmental Engineering plays a pivotal role in enhancing water efficiency, addressing environmental challenges, and supporting sustainable agricultural productivity in Nigeria. The study suggests that integrating modern engineering practices, technological innovations, and stakeholder capacity building into water resource management will significantly improve water utilization, reduce environmental degradation, and ensure sustainable water management practices across Nigerian communities. Based on the findings of this study, it was recommended that the government and relevant stakeholders should prioritize the modernization of irrigation and water management infrastructure to enhance efficiency and reduce water wastage.




1.1 Introduction

Agricultural and Environmental Engineering is a specialized branch of engineering that integrates principles of science and technology to develop sustainable solutions for agricultural production, environmental protection, and resource management (Akinola & Okafor, 2021). in the context of water resource management, Agricultural and Environmental Engineering provides the tools and methods necessary to optimize water distribution, reduce wastage, and ensure the long-term sustainability of both surface and groundwater resources.

According to Oluwafemi et al. (2020), water resource management refers to the planning, development, distribution, and optimal use of water resources to meet societal, economic, and environmental needs (Oluwafemi et al., 2020). Effective water management is vital for agricultural productivity, industrial growth, public health, and ecosystem sustainability. In Nigeria, water resources are under increasing pressure from rapid population growth, urbanization, climate change, and industrial expansion.

As a prelude to other parts of this study, this chapter will discuss the background upon which this study was initiated, the statement of problems that led to this study, the Aim and Objectives of the study. Others are Significance of the study, Scope of work, research questions, Limitation of the study and Definition of terms.


1.2 Background of Study

The development of Agricultural and Environmental Engineering in Nigeria is closely linked to the country's agricultural and environmental management needs. According to Adewumi and Akinbile (2020), the formal introduction of engineering principles into agriculture began during the colonial era, primarily to support large-scale plantation agriculture and irrigation schemes. They reported that while these initial efforts laid the groundwork for modern agricultural engineering, they were limited in scope and largely focused on commercial rather than subsistence farming. According to Oluwafemi and Abiola (2020), the efficient management of water resources is fundamental to national development and environmental conservation. They reported that Nigeria faces significant challenges in water resource management due to rapid population growth, urbanization, climate change, and unsustainable agricultural practices. These challenges have contributed to inadequate water distribution, declining water quality, and increased vulnerability to floods and droughts.

In recent decades, Nwankwo et al. (2022) affirmed that Agricultural and Environmental Engineering in Nigeria has evolved to address contemporary challenges such as climate change, population pressure, and urbanization. The use of technology-driven solutions, including automated irrigation systems, rainwater harvesting, watershed management, and remote sensing for water monitoring, has become more prominent. On the other hand, Oluwafemi and Abiola (2020) contend that the implementation of these modern interventions is still uneven, with rural and underserved areas often lacking access to engineered water solutions, leading to persistent inefficiencies in water utilization.

Eze and Okonkwo (2021) asserted that the discipline provides technical solutions for irrigation, drainage, soil and water conservation, and pollution control, which are essential for sustainable water utilization. They further stated that the integration of engineering practices into water resource management improves water efficiency, reduces wastage, and enhances agricultural productivity. Despite these benefits, the adoption of modern engineering techniques in Nigeria remains limited, leading to inefficiencies and resource mismanagement.

Furthermore, Adewumi and Akinbile (2020) affirmed that outdated irrigation methods, poor maintenance of water infrastructure, and lack of technical expertise are major barriers to effective water management in the country. They contend that without strategic implementation of engineering solutions, agricultural productivity and environmental sustainability are significantly compromised. On the other hand, Nwankwo et al. (2022) reported that research innovations in Agricultural and Environmental Engineering often remain confined to academic circles, with minimal translation into practical solutions for real-world water management challenges. This gap highlights the urgent need for practical application of engineering interventions to improve the sustainability of water resources.

The environmental dimension is equally critical. Oladipo (2019) stated that deforestation, land degradation, and erratic rainfall patterns have intensified the pressure on water resources, making integrated engineering approaches indispensable. The lack of coordinated efforts between agricultural development initiatives and environmental protection measures further exacerbates water scarcity and reduces the resilience of local communities to climate-related hazards. This study is set against the backdrop of these challenges, aiming to examine the impact of Agricultural and Environmental Engineering on water resource management in Nigeria.


1.3 Statement of Problems

Investigation revealed that water resource management in Nigeria is facing an increasing level of complexity due to rapid population growth, urbanization, agricultural expansion, and industrialization. The demand for water is escalating while the available resources are diminishing in both quality and quantity. Agricultural and Environmental Engineering, which plays a crucial role in the design and implementation of systems for sustainable water use, is often underutilized or inadequately integrated into national water management frameworks (Adewumi & Akinbile, 2020).

Agriculture remains the largest consumer of freshwater resources in Nigeria, accounting for over 70% of total water use. However, many irrigation schemes across the country are characterized by outdated technologies, poor maintenance, and inadequate technical expertise. The lack of proper application of Agricultural and Environmental Engineering principles in irrigation design, soil-water management, and erosion control is leading to reduced water efficiency and increased wastage (Oladipo, 2019).

Furthermore, the growing incidence of floods and droughts in several parts of the country reflects the poor state of integrated water resource management. While efforts are made through various agencies and policies to promote water conservation and equitable distribution, the absence of engineering-based interventions and modern monitoring systems is limiting their effectiveness. Many rural communities still lack access to clean and safe water due to inadequate planning, poor infrastructure, and lack of coordination between agricultural and environmental sectors (Eze & Okonkwo, 2021). It is against this backdrop that this study seeks to examine the impact of Agricultural and Environmental Engineering on water resource management in Nigeria.


1.4 Aim and Objectives of Study

The aim of this study is to investigate the influence of Agricultural and Environmental Engineering on water resource management in Nigeria.

The specific objectives of the study are:

  1. To assess the effectiveness of existing irrigation and water management systems in Nigeria.
  2. To evaluate the role of Agricultural and Environmental Engineering in optimizing water usage in agriculture.
  3. To identify environmental challenges affecting water resources in selected Nigerian communities.
  4. To determine the impact of engineering interventions on reducing water wastage and environmental degradation.
  5. To provide recommendations for improving water resource management using engineering solutions.

1.5 Research Questions

Based on the stated objectives, the research study seeks to answer the following questions:

  • How effective are the existing irrigation and water management systems in Nigeria?
  • What role does Agricultural and Environmental Engineering play in optimizing water usage in agriculture?
  • What environmental challenges are impacting water resources in selected Nigerian communities?
  • How do engineering interventions reduce water wastage and environmental degradation?
  • What strategies can be implemented to improve water resource management through engineering solutions?

1.6 Research Hypothesis

In order to pursue the objective of this study, the following generalized statements have been designed to guide and aids in obtaining the result for the experiment to be conducted. For this work, the null hypothesis will be represented with H0 while the alternative hypothesis will be represented with hypothesis H1.

Hypothesis One

  • H0: There is no significant impact of Agricultural and Environmental Engineering on water resource management in Nigeria.
  • H1: There is a significant impact of Agricultural and Environmental Engineering on water resource management in Nigeria.

Hypothesis Two

  • H0: Agricultural and Environmental Engineering does not significantly improve water resource management, reduces water wastage, and mitigates environmental degradation in Nigeria.
  • H1: Agricultural and Environmental Engineering significantly improves water resource management, reduces water wastage, and mitigates environmental degradation in Nigeria.

1.7 Significance of Study

The outcome of this research will advance environmental sustainability by identifying engineering solutions that mitigate the negative impacts of human activities on water bodies. In addition, farmers and agricultural stakeholders will benefit from practical recommendations that will support efficient water use and enhance crop yields.

Furthermore, the study will serve as a resource for academic researchers and institutions, providing empirical evidence and a framework for future research in the field of Agricultural and Environmental Engineering.

Lastly, the study will foster awareness among communities and stakeholders about the importance of integrating engineering solutions into water resource management.


1.8 Scope of Study

The study focuses on the application of Agricultural and Environmental Engineering in water resource management in Lagos State, Nigeria. It examines selected irrigation schemes, drainage systems, and water management policies implemented by the Lagos State Water Corporation and agricultural development projects in the region.


1.9 Limitations of the Study

During the course of this study, there were some problems encountered which stood as limitations to the research work. Some of the limitations include:

  1. Time Constraint: The time frame given to accomplish this project was very short due to school academic calendar and it was carried out under pressure which made the researcher not to implement some necessary features.
  2. Financial Constraint: Insufficient fund tends to impede the efficiency of the researcher in sourcing for the relevant materials, literature or information and in the process of data collection (internet, questionnaire and interview).
  3. Initial Cooperation Delay from Respondents: A particular limitation of this work came as a result of the respondent refusal to offer their cooperation at the initial time they were contacted. This contributed in making the success of this research study difficult.

1.10 Definition of Terms

Agricultural Engineering:

According to Akinola and Okafor (2021), agricultural engineering is the application of engineering principles to improve agricultural production through machinery, irrigation, soil and water management, and post-harvest technology.

Environmental Engineering:

This is the branch of engineering that applies scientific and technical principles to protect the environment and human health through pollution control, waste management, and ecosystem conservation (Oladipo, 2019).
