ABSTRACT


The study examines the impact of instructional materials on the learning and teaching of biology in senior secondary schools. Investigation revealed that many Nigerian schools, instructional materials are either insufficient or completely unavailable. Teachers are forced to rely on lecture-based methods that fail to engage students or adequately address their learning needs. The research design used in this report is descriptive design, utilizing questionnaire method to obtain information from the respondents for this project. A total of 100 respondents were selected for this study to represent the entire population of the study. Data was collected using the questionnaire and analyzed using the frequency distribution table to seek answers to the five (5) research questions. The data were presented on a frequency distribution table and analyzed using simple percentage, while hypothesis was tested using chi-square test.

The findings indicate that the use of various instructional materials, including textbooks, multimedia, laboratory equipment, and digital tools, significantly enhances students' understanding and academic performance in Biology. Students who were taught with the aid of instructional materials showed improved conceptual clarity, engagement, and retention of biological concepts compared to those who relied solely on traditional methods. Additionally, teachers who effectively incorporated instructional materials into their lessons reported better student performance and greater class participation. However, challenges such as inadequate resources, lack of teacher training in technology integration, and infrastructural limitations were identified as barriers to maximizing the potential of instructional materials.

The study concludes that while instructional materials play a critical role in Biology education, addressing these challenges is essential for achieving optimal educational outcomes. Based on the findings, it was recommended that schools should invest in a wide variety of instructional materials, including multimedia tools, textbooks, laboratory equipment, and models, to enhance the teaching and learning of biology. Additionally, the government should support schools in acquiring adequate instructional resources by increasing funding for educational materials and ensuring that these resources are distributed equitably across schools.



1.0 Introduction

1.1 Background of Study

Education is widely recognized as a fundamental driver of societal development and individual empowerment. Within the educational framework, biology occupies a pivotal position as a foundational science subject that promotes understanding of life processes and prepares students for careers in medicine, agriculture, biotechnology, and environmental management (Ajayi & Olayemi, 2020). However, the teaching and learning of biology in senior secondary schools face numerous challenges, one of the most significant being the inadequate availability and utilization of instructional materials. According to Eze & Chukwu (2019), instructional materials refer to the tools, resources, and devices used by teachers to facilitate effective teaching and learning. These include visual aids, laboratory equipment, charts, diagrams, models, and multimedia resources (Eze & Chukwu, 2019). Such materials play a critical role in making abstract concepts in biology more tangible and relatable, fostering better understanding and retention among students. Studies have shown that the use of instructional materials significantly enhances students' interest, motivation, and performance in science subjects (Oladejo et al., 2021).

The National Policy on Education emphasizes the integration of practical, hands-on learning experiences to improve the quality of science education (Federal Ministry of Education, 2013). However, the gap between policy and practice persists, leaving students underprepared for higher education and careers in science-related fields.

Research by Usman and Ahmed (2022) highlights that students taught with instructional materials outperform their peers in cognitive, affective, and psychomotor domains, underscoring the necessity of these resources in biology education (Usman et al., 2022). Despite their importance, many schools in developing countries, including Nigeria, struggle with the scarcity of instructional resources. According to the Federal Ministry of Education (2013), the implementation of a resource-rich curriculum is often hindered by factors such as insufficient funding, inadequate teacher training, and poor infrastructure. As a result, many teachers rely heavily on lecture-based teaching methods, which limit students' engagement and practical understanding of biological concepts (Federal Ministry of Education, 2013).

Biology, as a core science subject in secondary school curricula, plays a pivotal role in preparing students for various science-based careers and fostering an understanding of the natural world. Despite its importance, the teaching and learning of biology often face numerous challenges, particularly in developing countries, where instructional materials are either inadequate or entirely unavailable (Olumide & Adebayo, 2020). Instructional materials are essential tools that enhance understanding, stimulate interest, and improve students' academic performance by providing concrete experiences (Eze & Nnamdi, 2018).

Instructional materials include visual aids, laboratory equipment, models, charts, and multimedia resources that make abstract biological concepts more comprehensible. According to Ajayi (2019), the use of these materials bridges the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical application, fostering a deeper understanding of biological concepts such as genetics, evolution, and human anatomy. However, in many senior secondary schools, the lack of sufficient instructional resources impedes effective teaching, leaving students with superficial knowledge of biology.

The Nigerian educational system recognizes the importance of instructional materials, as reflected in the National Policy on Education, which emphasizes the need for practical, activity-based, and student-centered learning approaches (Federal Ministry of Education, 2013). Nevertheless, the implementation of this policy often falls short due to inadequate funding, insufficient teacher training, and poor maintenance of existing resources (Usman & Ahmed, 2021).

Therefore, in Nigeria where the research was carried out, the activities that was conducted is to explores the impact of instructional materials on the learning and teaching of biology in senior secondary schools.


1.2 Statement of Problems

Investigation revealed that the teaching and learning of biology in senior secondary schools face numerous challenges, many of which stem from the inadequate availability and utilization of instructional materials. Biology, as a science subject, often involves complex concepts and processes that are difficult for students to grasp without visual or practical aids. The absence of instructional materials such as charts, models, laboratory equipment, and digital tools is limiting the effectiveness of biology education and contributing to students' poor academic performance (Ajayi & Olayemi, 2020).

In many Nigerian schools, instructional materials are either insufficient or completely unavailable. Teachers are forced to rely on lecture-based methods that fail to engage students or adequately address their learning needs. This situation is particularly pronounced in public schools where funding for educational resources is often inadequate. Without instructional materials, students struggle to visualize and understand abstract concepts, leading to low retention rates and disinterest in the subject (Eze & Chukwu, 2019).

The problem is compounded by a lack of teacher training in the effective use of instructional materials. Even when resources are available, some educators are not equipped to integrate them into their lessons. This deficiency results in underutilization of materials that could otherwise enhance the teaching process. Research shows that the improper use of instructional materials is undermining the practical, hands-on approach that is essential for effective biology education (Okebukola, 2021).

Furthermore, the digital age has introduced advanced teaching tools such as simulations and virtual labs, but many schools lack the infrastructure and technical support to implement these innovations. The digital divide is widening the gap between students in well-equipped urban schools and those in under-resourced rural areas, exacerbating educational inequality (Usman & Ahmed, 2022). The persistent lack of instructional materials is not just affecting students' academic performance but also their preparedness for higher education and careers in science. Addressing this issue is critical for ensuring that biology education equips students with the skills and knowledge they need to succeed in an increasingly science-driven world.


1.3 Aim and Objectives of Study

The aim of this study is to examine the impact of instructional materials on the learning and teaching of biology in senior secondary schools. The objectives of the research study are as follows:

  1. To evaluate the extent to which instructional materials are available for teaching biology in senior secondary schools.
  2. To assess how effectively teachers utilize instructional materials during biology lessons.
  3. To determine the impact of instructional materials on students' understanding and academic performance in biology.
  4. To identify challenges faced by teachers and schools in the acquisition and utilization of instructional materials.
  5. To propose strategies for improving the availability and use of instructional materials in teaching biology.

1.4 Research Questions

The research questions for this study, derived from the stated objectives, are as follows:

  • To what extent are instructional materials available for teaching biology in senior secondary schools?
  • How effectively do teachers utilize instructional materials during biology lessons?
  • What is the impact of instructional materials on students' understanding and academic performance in biology?
  • What challenges do teachers and schools face in the acquisition and utilization of instructional materials?
  • What strategies can be proposed to improve the availability and use of instructional materials in teaching biology?

1.5 Research Hypothesis

In order to pursue the objective of this study, the following generalized statements have been designed to guide and aids in obtaining the result for the experiment to be conducted. For this work, the null hypothesis will be represented with H0 while the alternative hypothesis will be represented with hypothesis H1.

Hypothesis One

  • H0: The availability of instructional materials do not significantly influence the teaching and learning of biology in senior secondary schools
  • H1: The availability of instructional materials significantly influences the teaching and learning of biology in senior secondary schools

Hypothesis Two

  • H0: Implementing strategies to enhance the availability and use of instructional materials cannot significantly improve biology education outcomes.
  • H1: Implementing strategies to enhance the availability and use of instructional materials can significantly improve biology education outcomes.

1.6 Significance of Study

The outcome of this research will be beneficial to school administrators and policymakers by emphasizing the need for increased investment in instructional resources and infrastructure. This will support efforts to bridge the gap between policy and practice in the provision of educational tools.

For curriculum developers, this study will offer guidance on incorporating practical and resource-based approaches into the biology curriculum, ensuring students gain a more comprehensive understanding of biological concepts.

Furthermore, students will also benefit, as the recommendations from this study will create a more engaging and resourceful learning environment that will foster interest in biology and improve their academic success.

Finally, researchers and scholars will find the study useful as it will add to the existing body of knowledge on instructional materials, providing a foundation for future research in biology education and other related fields.


1.7 Scope of the Study

The scope of this study will focus on the impact of instructional materials on the teaching and learning of biology in senior secondary schools in Lagos State, Nigeria. It examines the availability, utilization, and effectiveness of instructional materials in enhancing students' understanding and academic performance in biology.

The research will include selected public and private senior secondary schools in Lagos State, involving biology teachers and students as participants. It will explore the challenges faced by schools in acquiring and using instructional materials and identify strategies to improve their use in biology education.


1.8 Limitations of the Study

A research study of this nature is bound to experience certain problems as such the constraints imposed on the research include:

  1. There was delay from respondents in providing the necessary information, particularly from teachers and school administrators, who often had competing responsibilities. This delay extended the timeline for data collection, which impacted the overall pace of the study.
  2. Additionally, financial and time constraints were significant limitations that affected the scope and scale of the research. Due to limited funding, the study was restricted in terms of the number of schools and participants that could be included, which may have influenced the representativeness of the sample and the depth of the findings.

1.9 Definition of Terms

Instructional Materials:

Instructional materials refer to physical or digital tools, resources, and equipment used by educators to support and enhance the teaching process. These materials include textbooks, charts, models, multimedia content, laboratory equipment, and educational software, all designed to facilitate student understanding and engagement in the subject matter (Ogunyemi & Ayodele, 2020).

Teaching:

Teaching is the process through which an educator imparts knowledge, skills, and values to students, using various methods and strategies. In the context of biology, teaching involves guiding students through concepts, theories, and practical applications of biological science, often incorporating instructional materials to make abstract ideas more concrete (Adeyemi, 2018).

Learning:

Learning is the process by which students acquire knowledge, skills, and competencies through study, experience, and instruction. In biology education, learning involves the absorption of scientific concepts, the development of critical thinking, and the application of biological principles in real-life scenarios (Dare & Musa, 2019).

Biology:

Biology is the branch of science that studies living organisms, their structures, functions, growth, evolution, and interactions with the environment. It is a fundamental subject in secondary education, fostering an understanding of life sciences and preparing students for further studies in various scientific fields (Ogunyemi & Ayodele, 2020).

Senior Secondary Schools:

Senior secondary schools in Nigeria refer to the last phase of secondary education, typically for students between the ages of 15 and 18. This stage focuses on more advanced studies in core subjects, including biology, and prepares students for higher education and the workforce (Federal Ministry of Education, 2021).
