The Significance and Wisdom of Marriage by the Youths in the Contemporary Time

    CHAPTER ONE

    1.0 Introduction

    1.1 Background of Study

The institution of marriage has a rich and varied history, evolving alongside human civilization. In ancient societies, marriage was primarily a social contract aimed at securing alliances, property, and lineage. It was less about romantic love and more about economic and social stability. Families arranged marriages to consolidate wealth, power, and social standing (Coontz, 2005). Marriage, as a social institution, has undergone significant transformations over the centuries, influenced by cultural, economic, and technological changes. in the contemporary era, these shifts have profoundly impacted how young people perceive and approach marriage. Traditional views that emphasized marriage as a duty and a means of securing social and economic stability are being reevaluated in the face of modern values that prioritize individual autonomy, career ambitions, and emotional fulfillment.

The mid-20th century, particularly post-World War II, marked another significant shift. The economic boom and the rise of the nuclear family ideal further transformed marriage, emphasizing romantic love and personal happiness. However, the latter part of the 20th century brought about increased divorce rates and a reevaluation of traditional marriage roles, influenced by the feminist movement and changing gender dynamics (Cherlin, 2009).

Research indicates that the youth today are increasingly delaying marriage, opting to focus on education and career development before settling down (Jones, 2018). This trend reflects a broader societal shift towards valuing personal growth and financial independence. Additionally, the rise of digital technology and social media has altered the dynamics of romantic relationships, providing new avenues for meeting potential partners and reshaping expectations of intimacy and commitment.

Marriage has long been considered a cornerstone of societal structure, shaping the foundational units of families and communities. In contemporary times, the youth's perspective on marriage reflects a blend of traditional values and modern aspirations. The significance of marriage among young people today encompasses not only the continuation of cultural and familial legacies but also the pursuit of personal fulfillment and partnership. Understanding the wisdom behind these evolving views offers insights into the social dynamics and individual motivations that drive marriage decisions in the 21st century. This exploration is crucial as it highlights the balance between maintaining heritage and adapting to contemporary life's complexities and challenges (Smith, 2020). Therefore, in Nigeria where the research was carried out, the activities that was conducted is to know the Significance and Wisdom of Marriage by the Youth in the Contemporary Time.

    1.2 Statement of Problems

Investigation revealed that the financial burden associated with marriage, including wedding costs, housing, and child-rearing expenses, can be daunting for the youth. Economic instability and the rising cost of living contribute to the hesitation in committing to marriage (Smith, 2019). Increasingly, young people are postponing marriage to focus on education and career goals. While this trend promotes personal and professional growth, it also raises concerns about the long-term stability and demographic implications of later marriages (Jones, 2018).

Furthermore, traditional norms around marriage and gender roles are evolving, leading to a reevaluation of what marriage means. This shift can create conflicts between older generations' expectations and the youth's modern values, causing tension within families and communities (Williams, 2019). Hence, it is against this backdrop that this study aims to explore the significance and wisdom of marriage by the youth in the contemporary time.
