1.1 Introduction
Accounting standards are defined as formalized principles, rules, and guidelines established to regulate how financial transactions are recognized, measured, presented, and disclosed in financial statements to ensure consistency, transparency, and comparability in financial reporting across organizations (IASB, 2022). These standards provide a structured framework that guides accountants in the preparation of financial statements such as the statement of financial position, income statement, and cash flow statement, ensuring that financial information reflects a true and fair view of an entity's performance and position (IFRS Foundation, 2023).
In the Nigerian context, the adoption of International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) has significantly influenced the reporting practices of corporate organizations, particularly manufacturing firms, by promoting uniformity and enhancing the credibility of financial information presented to stakeholders (FRCN, 2020).
As a prelude to other parts of this study, this chapter will discuss the background upon which this study was initiated, the statement of problems that led to this study, the aim and objectives of the study. Others are significance of the study, scope of work, research hypothesis and questions, limitation of the study and definition of terms.
1.2 Background of Study
Historically, accounting standards is closely linked to the evolution of accounting practices and the increasing demand for uniform financial reporting across organizations and nations. In the early stages of business development, accounting practices were largely based on individual organizational preferences and local customs. As business activities expanded and capital markets developed, the need for standardized accounting principles became more apparent. According to Zeff (2012), the emergence of large corporations during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries created a growing demand for credible financial information. Investors, creditors, and government agencies required financial statements that accurately reflected organizational performance and financial position. Consequently, professional accounting bodies began developing accounting principles and guidelines to regulate financial reporting practices.
According to the International Accounting Standards Board (IASB, 2022), accounting standards are essential instruments for improving the quality and credibility of financial reporting by promoting uniformity in accounting practices across different organizations and countries. The increasing globalization of business activities has made the adoption and implementation of accounting standards more important than ever before. As businesses engage in international transactions and seek foreign investments, the need for standardized financial reporting has become a fundamental requirement for economic growth and investor confidence.
IFRS has become one of the most widely adopted accounting frameworks globally and has significantly influenced accounting practices in both developed and developing economies. According to the IFRS Foundation (2023), the adoption of IFRS enhances transparency, accountability, and efficiency in financial markets by ensuring that financial statements provide a faithful representation of an organization's financial position and performance. Through the application of IFRS, investors and other stakeholders are able to compare financial information across organizations and industries with greater confidence.
In Nigeria, the need to improve the quality of financial reporting led to the adoption of IFRS as part of efforts to align the country's accounting practices with international best practices. The Financial Reporting Council of Nigeria (FRCN, 2020) reported that Nigeria officially adopted IFRS in 2012 to strengthen financial reporting, improve investor confidence, and facilitate access to international capital markets. Since the adoption of IFRS, organizations have been required to prepare financial statements in accordance with internationally recognized accounting standards, thereby enhancing the relevance and reliability of financial information presented to stakeholders.
The usefulness of accounting standards in the preparation of financial statements extends beyond compliance with regulatory requirements. Accounting standards provide clear guidance on how transactions should be recognized, measured, and disclosed, thereby reducing the likelihood of errors and manipulation in financial reporting. According to Weygandt et al. (2021), accounting standards contribute significantly to the production of high-quality financial statements by ensuring consistency in accounting treatments and promoting faithful representation of economic events. When accounting standards are properly applied, users of financial statements are able to make objective assessments of an organization's financial performance and position.
The Financial Reporting Council of Nigeria (2020) stated that some organizations continue to face compliance challenges due to insufficient technical expertise and inadequate understanding of IFRS requirements. Similarly, Ezeani (2021) asserted that the effectiveness of accounting standards depends largely on the competence of accounting personnel and the strength of regulatory enforcement mechanisms. Where accounting standards are not properly implemented, the objectives of transparency, comparability, and reliability may not be fully achieved.
This study is set against the backdrop of the growing need for reliable, transparent, and comparable financial statements and the role accounting standards play in ensuring effective financial reporting among organizations in Nigeria.
1.3 Statement of Problems
Investigation revealed that the preparation of financial statements in many Nigerian manufacturing companies, particularly in Lagos State, is still affected by inconsistent application of accounting standards, which undermines the reliability and comparability of reported financial information (FRCN, 2020). On the other hand, some organizations present financial statements that comply with formal requirements but fail to fully reflect the qualitative characteristics of relevance and faithful representation as required by modern accounting frameworks (IFRS Foundation, 2023).
Further investigation shows that inadequate technical knowledge among some accounting personnel is is a major factor affecting proper implementation of accounting standards, resulting in errors, omissions, and reduced transparency in financial statements (Ezeani, 2021). In addition, weak regulatory enforcement and limited monitoring by relevant authorities contribute to non-compliance and manipulation of financial reporting practices in some firms (FRCN, 2020). It is against this backdrop that this study seeks to examine the usefulness of accounting standards in the preparation of financial statements.
