A Linguistic Stylistic Analysis of the Campaign Speeches of Two Presidential Candidates in the 2011 Elections

    CHAPTER ONE

    1.1 Introduction

Campaign speeches are a crucial component of political campaigns, serving as a primary means for candidates to convey their messages, outline their policies, and connect with the electorate. The 2011 elections were a significant political event, marked by intense competition and diverse political ideologies. By analyzing the speeches of the two leading candidates, we can gain insights into the broader political landscape and the ways in which language is strategically used to navigate it. This analysis not only contributes to the field of political linguistics but also provides a deeper understanding of the dynamics of political persuasion and the role of language in shaping electoral outcomes.

As a prelude to other parts of this study, this chapter will discuss the background upon which this study was initiated, the statement of problems that led to this study, the Aim and Objectives of the study. Others are Significance of the study, Scope of work, Research questions, Limitation of the study and Definition of terms.

    1.2 Background of Study

The field of linguistic stylistics explores how language is used creatively and strategically across different contexts, offering a comprehensive understanding of the stylistic features and communicative functions of language. Within political communication, linguistic stylistics plays a pivotal role in analyzing how political actors use language to persuade, influence, and mobilize audiences. This study focuses on the linguistic stylistic analysis of campaign speeches delivered by two presidential candidates during the 2011 elections, seeking to uncover the distinct rhetorical strategies and linguistic choices that characterize their speech patterns.

Campaign speeches are instrumental in shaping public perception and electoral success. They serve as a platform for candidates to present their visions, outline policies, and establish a connection with the electorate. The strategic use of language in these speeches is crucial, as it can enhance the candidate's credibility, appeal to emotions, and frame political issues in ways that resonate with voters (Charteris-Black, 2011). The analysis of such speeches through a linguistic lens can reveal how candidates construct their political identities and engage with their audience.

The 2011 elections were a notable event in the political landscape, characterized by significant competition and diverse political ideologies. The speeches from this period provide a rich corpus for linguistic analysis, offering insights into the rhetorical tactics employed by the candidates. By examining the speeches of the two leading presidential candidates, this study aims to identify and compare the stylistic features that distinguish their rhetorical approaches.

Previous research in political linguistics has highlighted the importance of various linguistic elements, such as metaphors, narratives, and syntactic structures, in shaping political discourse (Lakoff, 2004; Chilton, 2004). These elements play a critical role in framing political messages, appealing to voter values, and constructing persuasive arguments. This study builds on existing literature by applying a stylistic analysis to a specific set of campaign speeches, providing a detailed examination of the linguistic techniques used by the candidates.

The methodology for this study involves a qualitative analysis of selected speeches, focusing on key linguistic features such as lexical choices, syntactic patterns, rhetorical devices, and thematic content. By systematically analyzing these elements, the study aims to uncover the underlying strategies that candidates use to achieve their communicative goals. This approach not only enhances our understanding of political rhetoric but also contributes to the broader field of linguistic stylistics.

Therefore, in Nigeria where the research was carried out, the activities that was conducted is to analyze the linguistic style of the campaign speeches of two presidential candidates in the 2011 elections.

1.2.1 An Overview of Political Campaigns in Nigeria

Nigeria's political history is marked by colonial rule, independence movements, military dictatorships, and democratic transitions. This legacy influences contemporary campaign strategies and voter attitudes. Nigeria operates within a multiparty system, with numerous political parties vying for power at local, state, and federal levels. The dominance of certain parties varies across regions, reflecting ethnic, religious, and regional affiliations. Political campaigns in Nigeria employ a mix of traditional and modern techniques. While rallies, door-to-door canvassing, and town hall meetings remain prevalent, social media and digital advertising are increasingly utilized, especially among younger voters. Given Nigeria's large population and diverse literacy levels, voter education initiatives are essential for informing citizens about their rights, the electoral process, and candidate platforms. Mobilization efforts aim to increase voter turnout, particularly among marginalized communities. Political campaigns in Nigeria face numerous challenges, including electoral violence, voter intimidation, ballot rigging, and disinformation. Controversies surrounding the conduct of elections often lead to post-election disputes and legal challenges (Omotola, 2014).

    1.3 Statement of Problems

Investigation revealed that many studies in political linguistics have focused on broad themes or rhetorical devices without delving deeply into the specific linguistic features, such as lexical choices, syntactic structures, and thematic content (Lakoff, 2004; Fairclough, 1995). A detailed examination of these elements can provide a more nuanced understanding of how candidates construct their political messages and engage with their audience. While there is substantial research on political rhetoric, specific electoral events, such as the 2011 presidential elections, have not been extensively analyzed.

The 2011 elections were marked by significant political developments and intense competition, providing a unique opportunity to study how candidates tailor their linguistic styles to address contemporary issues and voter concerns. Also, previous studies have often focused on the rhetorical strategies of individual politicians or generalized political discourse (Charteris-Black, 2011; Chilton, 2004). However, there is a lack of comparative studies that systematically analyze the linguistic styles of competing candidates in a single electoral context. This gap makes it difficult to understand how different candidates employ language uniquely to achieve their communicative goals.

Furthermore, there is limited research on how the stylistic choices of candidates in their speeches directly influence voter perception and behavior. Understanding this impact is crucial for comprehending the effectiveness of different rhetorical strategies in shaping electoral outcomes (van Dijk, 1997). The influence of cultural and contextual factors on the linguistic styles of candidates is often overlooked. The 2011 elections, with their unique socio-political context, offer an opportunity to explore how these factors shape the rhetorical approaches of different candidates.

1.4 Aim and Objectives of Study

The aim of the study is to analyze the linguistic style of the campaign speeches of two presidential candidates in the 2011 elections. In achieving this aim, the following specific objectives were laid out as follows:

    1. To identify and analyze the specific linguistic features and rhetorical strategies used by each candidate;
    2. To assess the impact of these linguistic choices on voter perception and behavior;
    3. To explore the influence of cultural and contextual factors on the candidates' linguistic styles; and
    4. To conduct a comparative linguistic stylistic analysis of the campaign speeches of two presidential candidates in the 2011 elections.

    1.5 Research Questions

The study came up with research questions so as to be able to ascertain the above stated objectives. The specific research questions for the study are stated below as follows:

    • What are the key linguistic features that distinguish the campaign speeches of the two presidential candidates in the 2011 elections?
    • How do these candidates use language to construct their political identities and persuade voters?
    • In what ways do the linguistic styles of the candidates differ, and what might account for these differences?
    • How do cultural and contextual factors influence the rhetorical strategies employed by the candidates?
    • What is the impact of the candidates' linguistic choices on voter perception and behavior?

    1.6 Significance of Study

The linguistic stylistic analysis of the campaign speeches of two presidential candidates in the 2011 elections offers several significant contributions to the fields of political linguistics, rhetoric, and communication studies.

    1. Contribution to Political Linguistics: This study enhances the understanding of how language functions in political contexts, particularly in campaign settings. By analyzing the specific linguistic features and rhetorical strategies employed by candidates, the research sheds light on the intricate ways language is used to influence, persuade, and mobilize voters. This contributes to a more comprehensive understanding of political communication and the role of language in shaping political discourse (Charteris-Black, 2011; Chilton, 2004).
    2. Insight into Rhetorical Strategies: The comparative analysis of the two candidates' speeches provides valuable insights into the different rhetorical approaches used in political campaigns. By identifying and contrasting the candidates' use of lexical choices, syntactic structures, and rhetorical devices, the study highlights how different linguistic strategies can be employed to achieve similar or divergent political goals. This analysis can inform future research on rhetorical strategies in political speechmaking and the effectiveness of various linguistic techniques (Lakoff, 2004).
    3. Cultural and Contextual Relevance: The study's focus on the 2011 elections provides a contextual analysis of how cultural and socio-political factors influence rhetorical strategies. This contextual understanding is important for appreciating the dynamics of political campaigns in specific settings and can be applied to similar analyses in different electoral contexts. It also highlights the importance of tailoring political messages to the cultural and socio-political environment in which they are delivered (Fairclough, 1995).

Finally, for scholars and students of linguistics, rhetoric, and political science, this study offers a detailed methodological framework for analyzing political speeches. The insights gained from this research can be used to inform teaching and further research in these fields, providing a model for conducting similar analyses in other electoral contexts. The study's findings can be integrated into academic curricula to enhance the understanding of political communication and discourse analysis (Chilton, 2004).

    1.7 Scope of the Study

The scope of the research is focused on the Linguistic Stylistic Analysis of the Campaign Speeches of Two Presidential Candidates in the 2011 Elections.

    1.8 Limitations of the Study

During the course of this study, many things militated against its completion, some of which are:

    1. Time Constraint: The time frame given to accomplish this project was very short due to school academic calendar and it was carried out under pressure which made the researcher not to implement some necessary features.
    2. Research Material: availability of research material is a major setback to the scope of the study.
    3. Financial Constraint: Insufficient fund tends to impede the efficiency of the researcher in sourcing for the relevant materials, literature or information and in the process of data collection (internet, questionnaire and interview).

    1.9 Definition of Terms

    Linguistic Stylistics:

Linguistic stylistics is a branch of linguistics that focuses on the study of style in language, particularly the ways in which language choices are used to achieve specific effects in various types of texts, including literary and non-literary works. In this study, it refers to the analysis of the distinctive linguistic features and rhetorical strategies used in political speeches (Simpson, 2004).

    Campaign Speeches:

Campaign speeches are public addresses delivered by political candidates during election campaigns. These speeches are designed to present the candidate’s policies, values, and vision to the electorate, with the goal of persuading and mobilizing voters to support the candidate (Atkinson, 1984).

    Rhetorical Strategies:

Rhetorical strategies refer to the techniques and methods used by speakers or writers to persuade their audience. These include the use of rhetorical devices such as metaphors, analogies, repetition, and appeals to ethos, pathos, and logos. In political speeches, rhetorical strategies are crucial for shaping public opinion and influencing voter behavior (Charteris-Black, 2011).

    Lexical Choices:

Lexical choices involve the selection of specific words and vocabulary used by speakers or writers. These choices can significantly impact the tone, clarity, and persuasiveness of a speech. in the context of political speeches, lexical choices are used to convey messages, evoke emotions, and establish the speaker’s identity and stance on issues (Halliday & Matthiessen, 2014).

    Syntactic Structures:

Syntactic structures refer to the arrangement of words and phrases to create well-formed sentences in a language. The structure of sentences can influence the readability, emphasis, and overall impact of a speech. In political discourse, candidates often use varied syntactic structures to highlight key points and make their arguments more compelling (Chilton, 2004).

    Thematic Content:

Thematic content involves the underlying themes and topics addressed in a speech. It includes the main ideas, issues, and messages that the speaker intends to communicate. In campaign speeches, thematic content is aligned with the candidate’s platform and is used to resonate with the audience’s concerns and values (van Dijk, 1997).

    Political Identity:

Political identity refers to the persona and image that a political candidate projects to the public. It encompasses the candidate’s values, beliefs, policies, and personal characteristics as communicated through their speeches and actions. Political identity is crafted through linguistic and rhetorical choices to appeal to specific voter demographics (Lakoff, 2004).
