    ABSTRACT


    This study assessed the knowledge of students in technical colleges regarding autotronics servicing strategies. The research design used in this report is descriptive design, utilizing questionnaire method to obtain information from the respondents for this project. Using a sample size of 200 respondents, findings showed that 35% of students possessed moderate theoretical knowledge of autotronics systems, while 40% reported high to very high understanding. Practical skills were generally lower, with only 30% of students indicating high or very high proficiency and 37.5% admitting to low or very low competence. Key challenges identified included lack of modern equipment (30%), inadequate practical exposure (25%), and poor electricity supply (15%). More than half of the respondents (50%) described training resources as inadequate or very inadequate. Suggested strategies for improvement focused on the provision of modern diagnostic tools (32.5%), regular practical workshops (25%), and instructor training (20%). Based on the result obtained from this research, it was recommended that technical colleges should invest in modern diagnostic tools and up-to-date autotronics equipment to enhance students' practical learning experience. Also, instructors should undergo regular training and professional development to keep pace with advancements in automotive technology.



    1.0 Introduction

    1.1 Background of Study

    The automotive industry has witnessed a rapid transformation in recent decades due to the integration of electronic systems in vehicle design, operation, and servicing. This fusion, commonly referred to as "autotronics," encompasses the electronic control of various subsystems in vehicles, including engine management, anti-lock braking systems (ABS), transmission systems, climate control, and driver assistance technologies. According to Aremu (2021), the development of autotronics has changed the traditional methods of automobile servicing, demanding a new set of competencies from automotive technicians and students in technical education (Aremu, 2021).

    Technical colleges are established to provide middle-level manpower equipped with relevant technical and vocational skills needed in the labor market. The National Policy on Education (FRN, 2013) emphasized the importance of technical and vocational education in preparing individuals for skilled trades and fostering technological development. However, the effectiveness of this mandate in the context of modern automotive servicing remains questionable. Olatunji (2020) asserted that the majority of technical colleges in Nigeria still rely on outdated instructional equipment and methodologies, which are inadequate for training students in the increasingly sophisticated field of autotronics (Olatunji, 2020).

    The relevance of autotronics education lies in its ability to prepare students for employment in a technologically advancing automotive industry. Eze and Okoro (2019) affirmed that knowledge of autotronics servicing strategies is essential for diagnosing faults in modern vehicles, conducting repairs, and ensuring safety standards. However, the acquisition of such knowledge requires adequate exposure to practical training, modern diagnostic tools, qualified instructors, and an up-to-date curriculum. Okafor (2022) reported that many students in technical colleges are not sufficiently exposed to real-life autotronics servicing scenarios, which hinders their readiness for industrial practice (Okafor, 2022).

    According to Nwachukwu (2018), the lack of functional laboratories, modern vehicles, and electronic diagnostic equipment poses significant challenges to effective teaching and learning in the field. This inadequacy not only affects students' competence but also diminishes the reputation of technical education in Nigeria (Nwachukwu, 2018). Autotronics, a combination of automotive and electronics, refers to the application of electronic systems in modern vehicles for enhanced functionality, safety, and performance. It involves the integration of microcontrollers, sensors, actuators, and diagnostic systems in automotive technology (Odu, 2020).

    Autotronics servicing strategies, therefore, encompass the methods, skills, and technical approaches required to diagnose, maintain, and repair these complex electronic components in automobiles. With the increasing use of electronic systems in modern vehicles ranging from engine management and braking systems to infotainment and driver assistance systems the importance of autotronics knowledge for technical college students cannot be overstated. Technical and vocational education plays a critical role in equipping students with practical and industry-relevant skills for employment and economic productivity. In Nigeria, technical colleges are established to prepare individuals with competencies needed for specific trades, including automobile technology (Federal Republic of Nigeria [FRN], 2013). However, the continuous advancement in automotive technology necessitates a corresponding improvement in curriculum delivery, instructional methods, and student competency in areas like autotronics servicing. Without proper knowledge of autotronics servicing strategies, graduates may struggle to meet the demands of the modern automotive industry, thereby limiting their employability and the overall contribution of technical education to national development.

    Several studies have asserted the growing gap between industrial requirements and the practical knowledge acquired by students in technical institutions, especially in the field of automotive electronics (Aina & Olaitan, 2019). This concern raises critical questions about the adequacy of instructional resources, teacher competencies, students' exposure to modern equipment, and curriculum relevance in technical colleges. Therefore, assessing students' knowledge of autotronics servicing strategies becomes vital in identifying strengths and deficiencies in technical training, with a view to enhancing educational quality and aligning learning outcomes with technological trends in the automotive sector.


    1.2 Statement of Problems

    Investigation revealed that the rapid advancement of automotive technology has significantly transformed the landscape of vehicle maintenance and repair, particularly with the integration of autotronics systems. Autotronics involves the use of electronic systems to enhance vehicle performance, safety, and efficiency, requiring technicians to possess specialized knowledge and skills to effectively service these complex systems. However, there is a growing concern that students in technical colleges may not be sufficiently prepared to meet the demands of autotronics servicing due to gaps in their knowledge and training.

    Furthermore, the rapid evolution of autotronics technologies poses a challenge in keeping the curriculum updated and relevant. Many technical colleges struggle to adapt their training programs to incorporate the latest advancements, leaving students with outdated knowledge that is no longer applicable in modern automotive repair contexts. In addition, there is a concern regarding the availability of adequate practical training opportunities for students. Hands-on experience is critical for mastering autotronics servicing strategies, yet resource constraints, such as lack of modern diagnostic tools and equipment, may hinder students' ability to acquire practical skills. It is against this backdrop that this study seeks to assess students' knowledge of autotronics servicing strategies in technical colleges.


    1.3 Purpose of the Study

    The purpose of this study is to assess the level of knowledge and understanding that students in technical colleges have regarding autotronics servicing strategies, and to identify the key challenges that affect their competency in servicing modern automotive electronic systems.


    1.4 Aim and Objectives of Study

    The aim of the study is to evaluate the knowledge and competence of students in technical colleges regarding autotronics servicing strategies. In achieving this aim, the following specific objectives were laid out as follows:

    1. To determine the extent of students' theoretical knowledge of autotronics systems.
    2. To assess the level of practical skills students possess in autotronics servicing.
    3. To identify the challenges faced by students in acquiring autotronics servicing knowledge.
    4. To examine the adequacy of training resources available for autotronics instruction.
    5. To recommend strategies for improving autotronics knowledge among technical college students.

    1.5 Research Questions

    Based on the stated objectives, the following research questions will guide the study:

    • What is the extent of students' theoretical knowledge of autotronics systems?
    • What practical skills do students possess in autotronics servicing?
    • What challenges do students face in acquiring autotronics servicing knowledge?
    • How adequate are the training resources available for autotronics instruction?
    • What strategies can be adopted to improve autotronics knowledge among students?

    1.6 Research Hypothesis

    In order to pursue the objective of this study, the following generalized statements have been designed to guide and aids in obtaining the result for the experiment to be conducted. For this work, the null hypothesis will be represented with H0 while the alternative hypothesis will be represented with hypothesis H1.

    Hypothesis One

    • H0: Students do not experience difficulties in acquiring autotronics servicing knowledge
    • H1: Students experience difficulties in acquiring autotronics servicing knowledge

    Hypothesis Two

    • H0: There is no significant relationship between the availability of training resources and students' knowledge of autotronics servicing strategies in technical colleges
    • H1: There is a significant relationship between the availability of training resources and students' knowledge of autotronics servicing strategies in technical colleges

    1.7 Significance of Study

    The outcome of this research will inform curriculum developers and the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) on the need to review and update instructional content to reflect current trends in automotive technology. This study will also serve as a reference for instructors and educators by revealing specific challenges students face in mastering autotronics concepts and practices. It will help instructors design better teaching methods and incorporate more practical, real-life examples into their lessons.

    Furthermore, technical college students will benefit directly from the study, as the recommendations will aim to enhance their learning experience and improve their employability by equipping them with the skills necessary for servicing modern automobiles. The study will also contribute to bridging the gap between school training and industry expectations.

    Lastly, the research study will serve as a useful resource for future academic inquiries into vocational education, particularly in the area of automotive electronics, and will support the overall goal of aligning technical education with the needs of a technologically evolving workforce.


    1.8 Scope of Study

    This study is limited to selected government-owned technical colleges in Lagos State, Nigeria. It will focus on final-year students in the automotive/mechanical engineering department, as they are expected to have acquired significant knowledge and skills in autotronics by the time of the research.


    1.9 Limitations of the Study

    During the course of this study, there were some problems encountered which stood as limitations to the research work. Some of the limitations include:

    1. Time Constraint: The time frame given to accomplish this project was very short due to school academic calendar and it was carried out under pressure which made the researcher not to implement some necessary features.
    2. Financial Constraint: Insufficient fund tends to impede the efficiency of the researcher in sourcing for the relevant materials, literature or information and in the process of data collection (internet, questionnaire and interview).
    3. Initial Cooperation Delay from Respondents: A particular limitation of this work came as a result of the respondent refusal to offer their cooperation at the initial time they were contacted. This contributed in making the success of this research study difficult.

    1.10 Definition of Terms

    Autotronics:

    Autotronics refers to the integration of electronics and computer technology into modern vehicle systems for functions such as fuel injection, braking, lighting, and diagnostics. According to Odu (2020), autotronics is the brain behind smart vehicle performance and safety.

    Technical Colleges:

    These are post-basic secondary institutions established to provide students with vocational and practical skills for employment or further education in fields like engineering, construction, and automotive technology (FRN, 2013).
