1.0 Introduction
1.1 Background of Study
Historically, reality TV shows in Nigeria can be traced back to the early 2000s when the genre began to gain traction globally. The launch of Big Brother Nigeria in 2006 marked a significant milestone, introducing audiences to the concept of real-life interactions among strangers living together in a confined space. This format quickly captivated viewers, leading to a surge in similar shows, including Nigerian Idol and Project Fame (Adebayo, 2019). These programs not only entertained but also provided a platform for cultural expression and social commentary.
As reality TV grew in popularity, so did the interest of Nigerian students, who often viewed these shows as reflections of their aspirations and societal dynamics. The influence of social media further amplified this engagement, allowing students to interact with the content and express their opinions on various platforms (Okoro & Uche, 2020). Research indicates that reality TV has become a crucial part of youth culture, impacting their perceptions of success, relationships, and societal norms (Adeleke, 2021). This historical context highlights the evolution of reality TV in Nigeria and its increasing relevance among students, setting the stage for a deeper examination of their attitudes towards these shows in the current study.
Reality TV has evolved from a niche genre into a dominant force in the entertainment industry, captivating audiences with its blend of drama, competition, and real-life narratives (Nwabueze & Alor, 2020). In Nigeria, the emergence of popular reality shows, such as Big Brother Naija and Gulder Ultimate Search, has sparked widespread interest and engagement among the youth demographic, particularly students (Ogunleye, 2021). Reality TV shows are unscripted television programs that document real-life events and interactions among participants, often featuring competitive or dramatic elements (Mills, 2020). The rise of reality TV shows has significantly transformed the landscape of entertainment worldwide, including Nigeria, where such programs have gained immense popularity among youth. Reality TV, characterized by its unscripted nature and focus on real-life scenarios, has become a significant cultural phenomenon, often reflecting and shaping societal values and attitudes (Baker, 2018).
Therefore, in Nigeria where the research was carried out, the activities that was conducted is to know the attitude of Nigerian students towards reality TV shows.
1.2 Statement of Problems
Investigation revealed that the overwhelming influence of programs on students' perceptions of reality, as they often blur the lines between entertainment and actual life experiences (Nwabueze & Alor, 2020). Additionally, the portrayal of relationships, gender roles, and social dynamics in reality shows is often skewed, leading to potentially unrealistic expectations among young viewers (Adeleke, 2021).
Another critical concern is the way these shows can foster negative behaviors, such as materialism and competition, as students may idolize participants who exhibit such traits (Ekwueme & Okwu, 2022). Moreover, the role of social media in shaping and amplifying student attitudes towards reality TV is significant; the rapid dissemination of opinions and trends creates an environment where peer influence is pervasive (Okoro & Uche, 2020). It is against the backdrop that this study seeks to address these problems by evaluating the attitude of Nigerian students towards reality TV shows.

The scope of the research is focused on the attitude of Nigerian students towards reality TV shows.
1.8 Limitations of the Study
During the course of this study, there were some problems encountered which stood as limitations to the research work. Some of the limitations include:
- Time Constraint: The time frame given to accomplish this project was very short due to school academic calendar and it was carried out under pressure which made the researcher not to implement some necessary features.
- Financial Constraint: Insufficient fund tends to impede the efficiency of the researcher in sourcing for the relevant materials, literature or information and in the process of data collection (internet, questionnaire and interview).
- Initial Cooperation Delay from Respondents: A particular limitation of this work came as a result of the respondent refusal to offer their cooperation at the initial time they were contacted. This contributed in making the success of this research study difficult.
