ABSTRACT

The study aimed the Challenges and Prospects of Manpower Development of Nigeria Maritime Industry with specific reference to Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) in Apapa, Lagos State. Specific objectives of the study include to; determine whether inadequate funding, knowledge and technological change impedes manpower development. The researcher adopted survey research design, finite population was used, with sample size of 250. Question Pearson Correlation Coefficient was used for the study. Findings from the Study showed that; inadequate funding, knowledge and technological change impedes manpower development The study concluded that the varying strength of the challenges to manpower development employed in this study by the Maritime Administration and Safety Agency, should be given attention according to their predictive ability on manpower development. The study recommended among others that the federal government should make funds available for the purchase of a full mission simulator for STCW compliant training for cadets and other seafarers. The Study also recommended that the Nigerian maritime industry should incorporate knowledge management strategies into their overall business strategies. In addition, it is suggested that regular Information and communication technology training and development should be enhanced so as to allow proper interactions between human resource management and the different departments in the Nigeria maritime industry which could lead to the organizational efficiency.
