ABSTRACT

A web based placement management system is an online platform designed to facilitate the management of the placement process in educational institutions. The aim of the study is to design and implement a web based placement management system using Nigeria Breweries Plc, Aba as a case study. In achieving this aim, the following specific objectives were laid out as follows to develop an application software that will implement robust security measures to protect sensitive data and ensure compliance with data privacy regulations, and measure the impact of the WB-PMS on placement outcomes and administrative workload. The motivation that led to the implementation of the proposed system is that the manual systems are often plagued by miscommunication and delays, which can negatively impact the overall efficiency of the placement process. Furthermore, there is resistance to change and lack of technical proficiency which hinders the effective use of web based placement management system. Other motivation issues are outline at the statement of problems section.

The methodology adopted in this study is the structured system analysis and design methodology (SSADM) which is a technical approach for analyzing and designing an application or system by applying object throughout the software development process. The programming language used is HTML, CSS, JAVASCRIPT, PHP, SQL and JQUERY. The reason why web programming languages was used is because, it is platform independent and it is a web based application. The study on web-based placement management system (WB-PMS) holds substantial significance for multiple stakeholders in the educational sector. This research provides valuable insights and practical solutions to enhance the placement processes within educational institutions, leading to several key benefits. The expected result is an online placement management system that will create a detailed design plan for the WB-PMS, incorporating features that address identified challenges, and provide continuous technical support and resources to ensure users can effectively utilize the system.

1.1 Introduction

A Web-Based Placement Management System (WB-PMS) is an online platform designed to facilitate the management of the placement process in educational institutions. This system automates and manages the end-to-end process of student placements, encompassing activities such as student registration, job postings by companies, application processing, interview scheduling, and tracking placement outcomes. in the contemporary educational environment, the integration of technology into various administrative processes has become indispensable. One such critical area is the placement management system, which is pivotal for linking students with potential employers. A web based placement management system offers a robust solution to streamline and enhance the efficiency of placement activities.

As a prelude to other parts of this study, this chapter will discuss the background upon which this study was initiated, the statement of problems that led to this study, the Aim and Objectives of the study. Others are Significance of the study, Scope of work, Limitation of the study and Definition of technical terms.


1.2 Background of Study

In the past decade, the advancement of cloud computing, mobile technology, and data analytics has further revolutionized WB-PMS. Modern systems leverage cloud platforms to offer scalable and flexible solutions that can be accessed from anywhere, at any time. Mobile-friendly interfaces have made it easier for students and recruiters to engage with the system on the go, enhancing the overall user experience. Moreover, the incorporation of data analytics has enabled institutions to gain insights into placement trends and outcomes, facilitating better decision-making and strategy formulation. Features such as real-time notifications, detailed reporting, and predictive analytics have become standard in contemporary WB-PMS.

The concept of digitalizing placement management began to take shape in the late 1990s and early 2000s, as the internet became more widely accessible and educational institutions started exploring its potential for administrative processes. Early efforts were rudimentary, involving basic web portals where students could access information about job opportunities and submit applications online. These initial systems were often limited in functionality and required significant manual intervention. The early 2000s marked a period of rapid growth in internet technology and software development, leading to more sophisticated web-based applications. Educational institutions began to recognize the inefficiencies of traditional placement processes and the advantages offered by web-based systems. These systems evolved to include features such as automated matching of students to job opportunities, online registration for placement activities, and digital tracking of placement outcomes.

The evolution of placement management systems in educational institutions has been profoundly influenced by advancements in information and communication technologies (ICT). Traditionally, placement processes were handled manually, involving extensive paperwork, face-to-face meetings, and a significant amount of time and effort from both students and placement coordinators. This manual approach often led to inefficiencies, errors, and delays in the placement process. With the advent of web technologies, there has been a paradigm shift towards automating and digitizing these processes. A Web-Based Placement Management System (WB-PMS) leverages the capabilities of the internet to offer a comprehensive and integrated platform for managing student placements. The background of studying WB-PMS encompasses understanding the challenges of traditional placement methods, the potential of web-based solutions, and the increasing reliance on digital tools in educational administration.

The challenges encountered that led to the execution of the research work is that, integrating the WB-PMS with existing institutional systems such as student information systems, learning management systems, and administrative databases can be complex and resource-intensive. Seamless integration is essential for ensuring data consistency and operational efficiency. Failure to achieve this can result in data silos and operational inefficiencies (Smith & Doe, 2021). It is against the background that the developments of this software to reduce the administrative burden on placement officers, allowing them to focus on strategic tasks such as building relationships with industry partners and improving placement rates. Moreover, by integrating with existing institutional systems, the WB-PMS ensures consistency and accuracy of data, facilitating better decision-making and reporting.


1.3 Statement of Problem

Investigation revealed that manual systems are often plagued by miscommunication and delays, which can negatively impact the overall efficiency of the placement process. The traditional placement process is challenging in the coordination and communication among various stakeholders-students, placement officers, and recruiters.

Additionally, technical problems such as system downtime, bugs, and software updates can disrupt the placement process. Regular maintenance and technical support are crucial to keep the system running smoothly. Institutions often struggle with limited Information Technology resources and expertise, which can exacerbate these issues (Brown & Green, 2019).

Furthermore, there is resistance to change and lack of technical proficiency which hinders the effective use of WB-PMS. According to research by Martin and Pearce (2020), user resistance and inadequate training are major barriers to the successful implementation of new technological systems in educational settings. Also, as the number of users and the volume of data increase, the system must be able to scale efficiently. Performance issues such as slow response times and system crashes during peak usage periods can frustrate users and undermine the system’s effectiveness (Johnson & Wang, 2008).


1.4 Aim and Objectives of the Study

The aim of the study is to design and implement a web based placement management system using Nigeria Breweries Plc, Aba as a case study. In achieving this aim, the following specific objectives were laid out as follows to develop an application software that will:

  1. Implement robust security measures to protect sensitive data and ensure compliance with data privacy regulations;
  2. Create a detailed design plan for the WB-PMS, incorporating features that address identified challenges;
  3. Evaluate the system’s performance in terms of usability, efficiency, and user satisfaction;
  4. Implement comprehensive training programs for students, placement officers, and recruiters;
  5. Measure the impact of the WB-PMS on placement outcomes and administrative workload;
  6. Conduct thorough testing to identify and mitigate potential security vulnerabilities; and

1.6 Scope of Study

The scope of the research is focused on the design and implementation of web based placement management system using Nigeria Breweries Plc, Aba as a case study.


1.7 Limitations of the Study

During the course of this study, many things militated against its completion, some of which are:

  1. Time Constraint: The time frame given to accomplish this project was very short due to school academic calendar and it was carried out under pressure which made the researcher not to implement some necessary features.
  2. Establishment Policies: Establishment policies posed a serious limitation as most staffs are not ready to release information needed for this project work. There were lots of information needed from the staffs of this institution to enhance the study which took them time to release or they did not release at all for security purposes, hence the scope was reduced.
  3. Financial Constraint: Insufficient fund tends to impede the efficiency of the researcher in sourcing for the relevant materials, literature or information and in the process of data collection (internet).

WB-PMS:

It is an acronym for Web-Based Placement Management System (WB-PMS) refers to an integrated online platform designed to facilitate and manage the entire process of student placements within educational institutions.

Management:

Management is a process of utilizing materials and human resources to accomplish a set goals or objectives through proper planning, organizing, directing and controlling the materials and human resources.
