    ABSTRACT

There are various methods to measure student’s learning process and understanding which examination is a vital and important method that has been used over several decades. Student do embark on examinations after a series of study, test and practices and a teacher/lecturer is responsible for analyzing and evaluating the student performance through the examination. It is well-known that the computer and information technology as a whole, has impacts on modern education deeply, and the first to be affected is computer education. This project research marked some important ways to reduce the teacher/lecturer efforts of measuring student’s learning and understanding by automating the way they evaluate student examination. It should be noted that when considering the computer to do the marking of a test or exam, the method which the student uses in writing the examination is also a great deal because it will determine the technique the computer will use during evaluating the test/examination.

In the research, we will analyze different techniques and methods that can be used in writing and evaluating student examination. The end product of this research is an improved automated examination marking system which is a web application with improved capabilities more than the existing online examination systems. It is developed with advanced web programming tools and framework. The method of data collection for this project research is the qualitative and quantitative research methodology. Therefore, the problems associated with examination marking methods, manual system and the existing online examination platforms were identified after series of interviews, observation, review of other management/educational software and website, literature review and examination of documents. This project will also suggest how to successfully implement the improved computerized procedure and to overcome the obstacle that would hinder the successful implementation of the system.

    CHAPTER ONE

    1.0 Introduction

    1.1 Background Of Study

It is well-known that the computer and information technology as a whole, has impacts on modern education deeply, and the first to be affected is computer education. There are various methods to measure student's learning and understanding. This project research marked some important ways to reduce the teacher/lecturer efforts of measuring student's learning and understanding by automating the way they evaluate student test and examination.

This project research concentrates fully on how computer will be used to mark sub-objective and theoretical questions rather than the normal questions with options hence it is an improved system. It should be noted that when considering the computer to do the marking of a test or exam, the method which the student uses in writing the examination is also a great deal because it will determine the technique the computer will use during evaluating the test/examination.

1.2 Aims and Objectives of Study

This project is targeted to the design of an improved automated examination marking and grading system with the major aim of eliminating the problems associated with the manual/traditional way of writing and evaluating students’ examination as well as improving on already existing examination platforms. Below is an outline of the objectives of the proposed system.

    1. To develop an application that will intelligently evaluate students response during examination and score the students as well as generate their corresponding grades.
    2. The end application will be a new platform that will be different from existing platforms due to its ability to evaluate students answers rather the normal question and pre-determined options.
    3. This approach will eventually ease up the lecturers’ duty of marking examination scripts. The only thing lecturers have to do is to be the administrator of the system.
    4. The last objective will be time constraint. This will save the time for marking examination script for both lecturer and the school managements.

    1.3 Scope Of Study

This project covers some area in computer science like database management and information processing, the effective use of web development tools and software development approach and most importantly, Artificial Intelligence and computer cognitive ability.
