    ABSTRACT

Digital marketing refers to the use of online platforms such as social media, email, search engines and websites to promote products and interact with consumers in real time, shaping how brands and customers connect in modern business environments. The purpose of this study is to examine the effect of digital marketing on consumer engagement in Lagos State, focusing on how different digital channels influence consumer interaction, response and participation. The motivation for this research arises from the increasing dependence of businesses on digital platforms in Nigeria and the need to understand how these tools actually influence consumer engagement outcomes in practical settings. Data were collected through a structured questionnaire administered to 200 respondents selected from users of digital platforms in Lagos State, covering social media, email, search engines and other online marketing channels.

The findings show that social media marketing recorded 75.0% agreement on engagement influence, content marketing 75.0%, email marketing 72.0%, search engine marketing 73.0% and digital analytics 76.0%. Furthermore, all chi-square values (103.40, 105.80, 86.80, 91.80 and 105.02) were greater than the critical value of 9.49. Furthermore, respondents consistently indicated that digital marketing improves interaction, response behavior and attention levels among consumers. The outcome of this research indicates that digital marketing significantly improves consumer engagement through interaction, personalization and data-driven strategies. It is concluded that organizations that effectively apply digital marketing tools achieve stronger consumer relationships and higher engagement levels in competitive markets. Based on the findings, it was recommended that businesses should optimize search engine marketing strategies to improve online visibility and ensure that their products and services appear prominently when consumers search for relevant information.

    1.1 Introduction

Digital marketing is defined as the use of internet-based technologies, platforms, and digital channels such as social media, search engines, websites, and email systems to promote goods and services, communicate value, and build sustainable relationships with customers (Chaffey, 2020). Consumer engagement refers to the degree of emotional, cognitive, and behavioral interaction that occurs between consumers and a brand through various marketing activities, particularly in digital environments (Brodie et al., 2011). Digital marketing has transformed traditional marketing practices by enabling real-time communication, personalized messaging, and interactive content delivery, which are intended to enhance consumer engagement and strengthen brand-consumer relationships. However, the effectiveness of these strategies varies across industries and organizations due to differences in implementation, technological adoption, and consumer behavior patterns.

As a prelude to other parts of this study, this chapter will discuss the background upon which this study was initiated, the statement of problems that led to this study, the aim and objectives of the study. others are significance of the study, scope of work, research hypothesis and questions, limitation of the study and definition of terms.

    1.2 Background of Study

Historically, digital marketing can be traced to the emergence of the internet in the early 1990s, when businesses began to explore online platforms as new channels for communication and advertising. According to Chaffey (2020), the introduction of websites and email systems marked the beginning of digital marketing as organizations started shifting from traditional print and broadcast media to online communication tools. The author reported that early digital marketing was largely static, consisting mainly of banner advertisements and basic email campaigns with limited interaction between businesses and consumers.

Kotler and Keller (2016) asserted that search engine optimization and paid advertising introduced a new level of visibility and targeting that allowed businesses to reach consumers based on their search behavior and interests. This period marked the beginning of more data-driven marketing strategies. According to Chaffey (2020), digital marketing is the application of internet-based technologies and digital channels such as social media, search engines, websites, and email systems to promote products and services while building long-term relationships with customers. The author reported that the evolution of digital platforms has transformed how businesses communicate with consumers by enabling real-time interaction, targeted messaging, and measurable campaign performance (Chaffey, 2020).

Kotler and Keller (2016) asserted that consumers are no longer passive recipients of marketing messages but active participants who influence brand perception through reviews, feedback, and social media interaction. According to Brodie et al. (2011), consumer engagement is defined as the psychological state that occurs through interactive, co-creative customer experiences with a brand. The authors stated that engagement includes emotional attachment, cognitive attention, and behavioral participation, all of which are influenced by the quality and relevance of digital marketing activities. They affirmed that higher engagement leads to stronger customer loyalty, increased trust, and improved business performance.

Kaplan and Haenlein (2010) contended that social media platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, X (formerly Twitter), and YouTube have become powerful tools for digital marketing communication. These platforms allow businesses to create content that encourages sharing, commenting, and interaction, which significantly enhances consumer engagement. They further reported that the effectiveness of social media marketing depends on content quality, timing, audience targeting, and consistency of communication (Kaplan and Haenlein, 2010).

According to Tiago and Veríssimo (2014), the adoption of digital marketing strategies has been driven by increased internet penetration and the widespread use of mobile devices. The authors stated that organizations that integrate digital tools into their marketing strategies are more likely to achieve higher customer engagement levels compared to those relying solely on traditional marketing channels. They affirmed that digital marketing enables firms to gather customer data and use analytics to improve decision-making and personalization.

Chaffey and Ellis-Chadwick (2019) reported that consumers often rely on search engines to gather information before making purchasing decisions, making search engine presence essential for engagement. Kaushik (2010) contended that organizations can only improve consumer engagement when they effectively measure, interpret, and act on data generated from digital platforms. He stated that analytics tools help businesses understand consumer behavior patterns, track campaign performance, and refine marketing strategies for better engagement outcomes.

In the Nigerian context, digital marketing adoption has increased significantly due to the growth of internet access and mobile technology. However, consumer engagement outcomes vary across industries due to differences in strategy execution, technological capacity, and digital literacy levels among consumers. Many organizations still face challenges such as poor content strategy, lack of data-driven decision-making, and inconsistent communication across digital platforms.

This study is set against the backdrop of increasing digital transformation in marketing practices and the need to understand how digital marketing influences consumer engagement in contemporary business environments.

    1.3 Statement of Problems

Investigation revealed that many businesses struggle with low engagement rates on social media platforms, poor response to online advertisements, and limited customer participation in digital campaigns. On the other hand, some firms that invest heavily in digital marketing still experience minimal conversion rates due to ineffective targeting, lack of personalization, and poor content relevance.

Additionally, inconsistency in digital communication strategies across platforms such as Instagram, Facebook, and email marketing systems has weakened brand trust and reduced sustained customer interaction (Kotler & Keller, 2016).

Furthermore, rapid changes in digital technology and consumer preferences have made it difficult for organizations to maintain consistent engagement strategies over time. It is against this backdrop that this study seeks to examine the effect of digital marketing on consumer engagement.
