1.1 Introduction
Parasitology is the branch of biology that studies organisms which live on or within a host organism and derive nutrients at the expense of the host, often leading to disease or reduced productivity (Roberts & Janovy, 2013). In poultry production systems, parasites represent a major biological constraint because they affect growth, reproduction, survival, and overall productivity of birds. Ducks, being widely reared for meat and eggs in both rural and urban settings, are frequently exposed to a wide range of internal and external parasites due to their rearing conditions and feeding habits. Duck production contributes significantly to food security and household income, particularly in rural communities where they are valued for their adaptability and low maintenance requirements. However, the productivity of ducks is often compromised by parasitic infections that go unnoticed due to limited diagnostic attention and poor veterinary surveillance systems in local markets.
This chapter will address the background information that motivated this study, the challenges that prompted it, its aim, and its objectives as a preface to subsequent sections of the study. Additional factors include the study's significance, scope, limitations, research questions, and the definition of technical terms.
1.2 Background of Study
Parasitology is the study of organisms that live in or on another organism, deriving nourishment at the expense of the host and often causing harm in the process (Roberts & Janovy, 2013). In livestock and poultry production systems, parasitic infections remain one of the most persistent biological constraints affecting productivity, animal welfare, and food safety. Ducks, which are an important component of rural poultry farming systems, are particularly vulnerable to a wide range of internal and external parasites due to their feeding behavior, environmental exposure, and management conditions. According to Thrusfield (2007), veterinary epidemiology has emphasized the importance of field-based studies in identifying disease distribution patterns within animal populations. He reported that inventories of parasites in livestock populations provide baseline data that support disease control planning and surveillance systems. This approach has been applied in various regions to assess parasitic burdens in poultry species under natural rearing and marketing conditions.
According to Roberts and Janovy (2013), parasites not only affect animal health but also pose significant public health concerns, especially when zoonotic species are involved. They reported that improper handling and consumption of infected poultry products may expose humans to parasitic infections, thereby creating a link between animal health and human health under the One Health framework. This emphasizes the importance of monitoring parasitic infections in food-producing animals such as ducks.
In Nigeria, duck production plays a significant role in household nutrition and income generation, especially in rural communities where poultry serves as an accessible source of animal protein. However, according to FAO (2014), livestock production systems in many African countries are challenged by inadequate disease surveillance systems, limited veterinary services, and poor extension support. The FAO further affirmed that these limitations contribute to the persistence of parasitic diseases in poultry populations, particularly in informal market systems where animals from different sources are aggregated and sold (FAO, 2014). Anyigba market, like many other local markets in Nigeria, serves as a convergence point for livestock sourced from different farms and environments. According to field-based observations in similar market systems, such aggregation increases the risk of cross-infection and parasite transmission among animals due to close contact and shared holding environments. On the other hand, the lack of routine veterinary inspection in such markets allows infected birds to be sold without detection, thereby facilitating the spread of parasites to new hosts and environments.
According to Thrusfield (2007), epidemiological studies in veterinary science are essential for understanding the distribution, determinants, and control of diseases in animal populations. Thrusfield stated that baseline data on disease prevalence and parasite distribution is critical for designing effective intervention strategies. In the context of poultry parasitology, such data is often lacking at the market level, making it difficult to implement targeted control programs.
This study is set against the backdrop of poor market hygiene, limited veterinary inspection, and inadequate data on duck parasites in Anyigba, which contribute to increased parasite transmission and potential public health risks.
1.3 Statement of Problems
Investigation revealed that the increasing demand for duck meat in many local markets in Nigeria, including Anyigba market, is associated with a parallel rise in concerns over parasitic infections that affect poultry health and public food safety. Ducks that are sourced from informal markets often originate from different environmental and management systems, where exposure to parasites is influenced by poor sanitation, mixed farming practices, and inadequate veterinary supervision. These conditions contribute to the persistence and transmission of endoparasites and ectoparasites that affect productivity, meat quality, and consumer health safety (Soulsby, 1982).
On the other hand, despite the economic importance of ducks as a source of protein and income for rural households, there is limited empirical documentation on the specific types and prevalence of parasites affecting ducks in local markets within Kogi State. This gap in knowledge makes it difficult to design effective control and prevention strategies that is tailored to local production and marketing systems. The absence of such data also limits public health awareness and veterinary intervention efforts aimed at reducing parasite transmission in the poultry value chain.
Furthermore, unhygienic handling practices, inadequate housing conditions prior to sale, and movement of birds across different ecological zones is likely to increase the diversity and burden of parasitic infections in market-bound ducks (Permin & Hansen, 1998). It is against this backdrop that this study seeks to identify, classify, and determine the prevalence of parasites affecting ducks obtained from Anyigba market.
1.4 Aim and Objectives of Study
The aim of this study is to investigate and document the parasites present in ducks obtained from Anyigba market. In achieving this aim, the following specific objectives were laid out as follows:
- To identify the different types of parasites found in ducks obtained from Anyigba market.
- To determine the prevalence of parasitic infections in ducks sold in Anyigba market.
- To classify the parasites into endoparasites and ectoparasites.
- To assess the organs or body parts most affected by parasitic infestations in ducks.
- To evaluate the possible risk factors associated with parasitic infections in ducks obtained from the market.
1.5 Research Questions
The study came up with research questions so as to be able to ascertain the above stated objectives. The specific research questions for the study are stated below as follows:
- What types of parasites are found in ducks obtained from Anyigba market?
- What is the prevalence of parasitic infections in ducks sold in Anyigba market?
- How are the identified parasites classified into endoparasites and ectoparasites?
- Which organs or body parts of ducks are most affected by parasitic infestations?
- What risk factors contribute to parasitic infections in ducks obtained from Anyigba market?
1.6 Significance of Study
The outcome of this research will support public health awareness which will reduce the risk of zoonotic transmission from infected ducks. In addition, the findings will provide reliable baseline information on duck parasites in Anyigba market which will support veterinary surveillance and disease monitoring systems.
Furthermore, the findings will guide veterinary professionals in designing effective parasite control strategies which will enhance poultry disease prevention.
Lastly, the data generated will serve as a reference for future academic research which will strengthen parasitological studies in poultry systems.
1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study covers parasitic infections in ducks sold within Anyigba market in Kogi State, Nigeria, focusing on both internal and external parasites.
However, the study is limited to only market-sourced ducks and does not extend to farm-level surveillance outside the study location.
