1.1 Background of Study
The impact of knowledge management (KM) practices on students' academic performance has become a significant area of interest in educational research. Knowledge management, defined as the systematic process of creating, sharing, using, and managing knowledge and information within an organization, has been widely adopted in various sectors to enhance efficiency and innovation. in the context of education, KM practices can play a pivotal role in improving learning outcomes and academic performance.
Effective knowledge management practices in educational institutions involve the integration of various tools and techniques to facilitate knowledge sharing among students, educators, and administrative staff. These practices include the use of digital platforms for information dissemination, collaborative learning environments, and continuous professional development for educators. When implemented effectively, KM practices can lead to improved student engagement, better resource utilization, and enhanced learning experiences.
Research has shown that students who have access to well-structured knowledge management systems tend to perform better academically. This is because KM practices help in organizing educational content, making it more accessible and easier to understand. Moreover, these practices promote a culture of collaboration and continuous learning, which are crucial for academic success.
The concept of knowledge management (KM) has its roots in the corporate sector, where it has been extensively utilized to improve organizational efficiency and innovation. Over the past few decades, the principles of KM have been increasingly applied in the educational sector, aiming to enhance the learning experience and academic performance of students.
The integration of KM practices in education has been facilitated by advancements in technology, particularly the development of digital learning platforms and knowledge management systems. These technologies enable the efficient storage, retrieval, and dissemination of educational content, making it more accessible to students and educators. Despite the potential benefits, the adoption of KM practices in education is not without challenges. These include issues related to the digital divide, data privacy, and the need for a cultural shift towards knowledge sharing among educators and students. Addressing these challenges requires a concerted effort from educational institutions, policymakers, and technology providers to create an enabling environment for effective knowledge management.
Empirical research indicates that effective KM practices can positively impact students' academic performance. According to a study by Chatti, Jarke, and Frosch-Wilke (2007), the implementation of KM systems in educational settings leads to improved student engagement and learning outcomes. This is attributed to the enhanced organization and accessibility of information, as well as the promotion of collaborative learning environments. Additionally, KM practices help in identifying and disseminating best teaching practices, thereby improving the overall quality of education.
Therefore, in Nigeria where the research was carried out, the activities that was conducted is to assess the Knowledge Management Practice as Correlates of Students Academic Performance in Public Colleges of Education.
1.2 Statement of Problems
Investigation revealed that one of the primary challenges is the digital divide, which refers to the disparity in access to technology and digital resources among students from different socioeconomic backgrounds. While KM systems rely heavily on digital platforms, not all students have equal access to the necessary technology, such as computers and high-speed internet. This inequity can exacerbate existing educational disparities and limit the effectiveness of KM practices (Warschauer, 2003).
Additionally, Implementing KM practices often require a cultural shift within educational institutions. Teachers and administrators may resist adopting new technologies and methodologies, preferring traditional approaches to education. This resistance can stem from a lack of familiarity with KM tools, concerns about increased workload, or skepticism about the benefits of KM. Overcoming this resistance is essential for successful KM implementation (Fullan, 2001).
Furthermore, the use of digital KM systems involves the collection, storage, and sharing of large amounts of personal and academic data. Ensuring the privacy and security of this data is a significant concern. Breaches of data privacy can have severe consequences for students and institutions, leading to a loss of trust and potential legal issues. Establishing robust data protection measures is crucial to address this problem (Solove, 2006). Hence, it is against this backdrop that this study aims to examine the knowledge management practice as correlates of students’ academic performance in public colleges of education.
1.3 Aim and Objectives of Study
The aim of the study is to investigate the impact of knowledge management (KM) practices on students’ academic performance. In achieving this aim, the following specific objectives were laid out as follows:
- To explore how educators’ proficiency with KM tools and their attitudes towards knowledge sharing influence the effectiveness of KM practices;
- To assess the impact of professional development programs on educators’ ability to integrate KM practices into their teaching strategies;
- To identify specific knowledge management practices that have a significant positive impact on academic outcomes;
- To investigate the extent to which students have access to and use knowledge management tools and resources; and
- To suggest strategies for fostering a culture of knowledge sharing and continuous learning among students and educators.
1.4 Research Questions
The study came up with research questions so as to be able to ascertain the above stated objectives. The specific research questions for the study are stated below as follows:
- Does knowledge management practice have significant positive impact on academic outcomes?
- How does educators’ proficiency with KM tools and their attitudes towards knowledge sharing influence the success of KM practices?
- What is the impact of professional development programs on educators’ ability to integrate KM practices into their teaching strategies?
- To what extent does student utilize knowledge management tools and resources?
- What strategies can foster a culture of knowledge sharing and continuous learning among students and educators?
1.5 Research Hypothesis
In order to pursue the objective of this study, the following generalized statements have been designed to guide and aids in obtaining the result for the experiment to be conducted. For this work, the null hypothesis will be represented with H0 while the alternative hypothesis will be represented with hypothesis H1.
Hypothesis One
- H0: Students with greater access to and utilization of KM tools does not perform better academically than those with limited access
- H1: Students with greater access to and utilization of KM tools perform better academically than those with limited access
Hypothesis Two
- H0: Educators’ proficiency with KM tools and attitudes towards knowledge sharing do not influence students’ academic performance
- H1: Educators’ proficient in using KM tools and supportive of knowledge sharing enhance the academic performance of their students

The research outcome of the findings will be beneficial to the following Stakeholders:

1.7 Scope of Study
The scope of the research is focused on the Knowledge Management Practice as Correlates of Students Academic Performance in Public Colleges of Education using Ogun State, Nigeria as a case study.
1.8 Limitations of the Study
During the course of this study, many things militated against its completion, some of which are:
- Time Constraint: The time frame given to accomplish this project was very short due to school academic calendar and it was carried out under pressure which made the researcher not to implement some necessary features.
- Financial Constraint: Insufficient fund tends to impede the efficiency of the researcher in sourcing for the relevant materials, literature or information and in the process of data collection (internet, questionnaire and interview).
1.9 Definition of Terms
Knowledge Management (KM):
Knowledge management refers to the systematic process of creating, sharing, using, and managing the knowledge and information of an organization. in the context of education, KM involves practices and tools that facilitate the effective dissemination and utilization of educational content to enhance learning outcomes (Alavi & Leidner, 2001).
Academic Performance:
Academic performance refers to the measurable outcomes of a student's learning process, typically evaluated through grades, test scores, and other academic assessments. It reflects the extent to which a student has achieved their educational goals (York, Gibson, & Rankin, 2015).
Learning Management System (LMS):
A learning management system is a digital platform used by educational institutions to deliver, manage, and track educational content and activities. Examples include Moodle and Blackboard. LMSs support KM by providing tools for content delivery, communication, and assessment (Watson & Watson, 2007).
Digital Repository:
A digital repository is an online database where educational materials such as research papers, course notes, and multimedia content are stored and made accessible to students and educators. These repositories facilitate knowledge sharing and retrieval (Jones, Andrew, & MacColl, 2006).
Collaborative Learning:
Collaborative learning is an educational approach where students work together in groups to complete tasks, solve problems, or learn new concepts. This method leverages social interactions to enhance the learning process and is often supported by KM tools that facilitate collaboration (Laal & Ghodsi, 2012).
Digital Divide:
The digital divide refers to the gap between individuals who have access to modern information and communication technology (ICT) and those who do not. In education, this divide can affect students' ability to benefit from KM practices, as access to digital resources is unevenly distributed (Warschauer, 2003).
Data Privacy:
Data privacy refers to the protection of personal and sensitive information from unauthorized access, use, or disclosure. In educational KM systems, data privacy is a critical concern as these systems handle large amounts of student and academic data (Solove, 2006).
Professional Development:
Professional development refers to continuous training and education that educators undergo to improve their teaching skills and knowledge. in the context of KM, professional development programs help educators learn how to effectively use KM tools and integrate them into their teaching practices (Guskey, 2002).
Tacit Knowledge:
Tacit knowledge is the personal, context-specific, and often unarticulated knowledge that individuals acquire through experience. In education, tacit knowledge includes the insights and expertise that educators and students develop through their interactions and learning processes (Nonaka & Takeuchi, 1995).
Key Performance Indicators (KPIs):
Key performance indicators are measurable values that indicate how effectively an organization is achieving its objectives. in the context of KM practices in education, KPIs might include metrics such as student engagement levels, academic achievement, and the usage rates of KM tools (Parmenter, 2015).
