Modern Communication Equipment and Its Impact on the Job Performance of Workers (A Case Study of Some Selected Banks In Damaturu Metropolis)

    CHAPTER ONE

    1.1 Introduction

Modern communication equipment refers to advanced technological devices and platforms used for communication purposes in contemporary workplaces, including but not limited to smartphones, tablets, laptops, email systems, video conferencing software, instant messaging applications, and collaboration tools. In today's fast-paced and interconnected world, communication equipment has undergone significant advancements, revolutionizing the way individuals interact and collaborate in various professional settings. From smartphones and tablets to video conferencing platforms and instant messaging apps, modern communication tools have become indispensable assets in the workplace. The integration of these technological innovations has not only facilitated quicker and more efficient communication but has also reshaped the dynamics of workplace interactions and productivity.

As a prelude to other parts of this study, this chapter will discuss the background upon which this study was initiated, the statement of problems that led to this study, the Aim and Objectives of the study. Others are Significance of the study, Scope of work, Research hypothesis and questions, Limitation of the study and Definition of terms.

    1.2 Background of Study

The rapid evolution of communication technology has transformed the way individuals interact and conduct business in today's digital era. Traditional modes of communication have given way to more sophisticated and versatile tools, enabling seamless connectivity and collaboration across geographical boundaries. As organizations strive to adapt to this technological shift, understanding the implications of modern communication equipment on the job performance of workers becomes increasingly crucial.

Previous research has highlighted the significant role of communication technology in shaping workplace dynamics and productivity. Studies have shown that the integration of advanced communication tools can enhance information sharing, decision-making processes, and overall efficiency within organizations. However, the extent to which these advancements impact the job performance of individual workers remains a subject of debate and exploration. Moreover, while modern communication equipment offers unparalleled convenience and accessibility, it also introduces new challenges and complexities. Issues such as information overload, digital distractions, and concerns regarding data security may arise, potentially affecting employee focus, morale, and effectiveness in performing job tasks.

Office as a mini-social system according to farber and Barr 1979 plays important roles in defining responsibilities. For the aforementioned reasons the secretary must be available to organize and run the office completely. Here the secretary is seen as an executive assistant who has a mastery of office / organizational skills. She has to be familiar with the manipulation of the modern communication equipment which is made to enhance his/her performance. Office automation provides increased productivity through improved access to data, faster responses to customer demands and faster decision makings. The inventions of modern office equipment were necessitated as a result of the growth in large scale enterprises and also as a technological breakthrough. The office therefore relies much on sophisticated office equipment in order to cope with the ever-increasing activities in the organizations. It seems however, that although the higher levels of management might not make much direct use of modern office technology the secretary will. This office automation for the secretarial is in providing the secretary with a system that meets the real need identified as being important rather than the ones of typing and stenography that are thoughts to be important. As against the traditional office the modern office has a lot of activities to perform with the aid of modern equipment.

Against this backdrop, conducting a systematic investigation into the relationship between modern communication equipment and job performance is essential for gaining insights into the dynamics of contemporary workplaces. By examining both the benefits and challenges associated with these technologies, organizations can develop informed strategies to maximize the positive impact of communication tools on employee performance while mitigating potential drawbacks.

    1.3 Statement of Problems

Investigation revealed that the use of modern communication equipment introduces security vulnerabilities such as data breaches, phishing attacks, and malware infections. Workers may inadvertently compromise sensitive information or fall victim to cyber threats, impacting organizational security and confidentiality. Additionally, the abundance of communication channels and information accessible through modern equipment can overwhelm workers, causing distractions and reducing their ability to focus on essential tasks. Information overload may lead to decreased productivity and decision-making efficiency (Galluch et al., 2015).

More so, constant connectivity through modern communication equipment blurs the boundaries between work and personal life, leading to burnout and decreased job satisfaction among workers. Striking a balance between work responsibilities and personal time becomes challenging, affecting overall well-being and job performance. While modern communication equipment facilitates instant connectivity, it can also create communication barriers due to differences in technological proficiency, language barriers, or misinterpretation of messages. These barriers may hinder effective collaboration and teamwork among workers (Galluch et al., 2015).

Furthermore, the management of many firms and their managers must therefore understand the implications of this new information technology revolution which require substantial future readjustment and quickly learn how to benefit from it. Therefore the study tends to investigate the influence of modern communication equipment on the job performance of workers in Nigeria banking industry.
