ABSTRACT

The water alarm detector is a self-contained electronic device that sounds an alarm when its sensor is in contact with water. Active water detector systems can operate an individual appliance or control the whole house. This system also generates an alarm, and it automatically shuts off the water supply. The aim of the study is to scrutinize the Principal of Operation of Rain Activated Alarm System with Automated Roofing System. In achieving this aim, the following specific objectives were laid out to produce an alarm to help users alert more quickly to avoid the presence of rain from wet shirt at clothesline outside the house, design an electrical circuit to detect the presence of rain, and construct the mechanical part of the model house. The water alarms detect leaks from toilets that have the potential to cause mold growth. Slow leaks from appliances and plumbing fixtures often go unnoticed. Excess moisture and standing water from a slow leak can cause extensive damage to the floors and walls of your home. There is also the potential for mold growth. This study will be of immense benefit to Electrical Electronics Engineers, NEPA/PHCN and other researchers who intend to know more on this study and can also be used by non-researchers to build more on their research work. This study contributes to knowledge and could serve as a guide for other study.

CHAPTER ONE

1.1 Introduction

The water alarm detector is a self-contained electronic device that sounds an alarm when its sensor is in contact with water. It can be used near water heaters, washing machines, sump pumps, bathtubs, toilets, dishwashers, and high-efficiency furnace pumps. Water alarms will detect leaks from toilets that have the potential to cause mold growth. Slow leaks from appliances and plumbing fixtures often go unnoticed. Excess moisture and standing water from a slow leak can cause extensive damage to the floors and walls of your home. There is also the potential for mold growth. A water alarm detector will let you know if there is a moisture problem. There are two types of water alarm detectors-passive and active. The passive detector uses a 9-volt battery. The moisture sensor is placed on the floor and activates the alarm when it becomes wet. Damp locations or high temperatures may reduce the life of the battery, so the detector should be checked regularly to see if it is working properly. These detectors can be purchased at most home improvement stores.

As a prelude to other parts of this study, this chapter will discuss the background upon which this study was initiated, the statement of problems that led to this study, the Aim and Objectives of the study. Others are Significance of the study, Scope of work, Research hypothesis and questions, Limitations of the Study and Definition of technical terms.


1.2 Background of Study

Active water detector systems can operate an individual appliance or control the whole house. This system also generates an alarm, and it automatically shuts off the water supply. These systems are more costly than passive systems. Since active water detectors may require special shut-off valves and electrical wiring, it is best to consult a professional to determine which system will meet your needs. Water detection sensor is a device that detects rain/water and signals the device that it is attached to it. It is mainly used in irrigation, industry and to protect automated interiors. It is also used for electricity generation which is known as hydroelectric power and many more purposes. So, when it rains it helps some of these processes. But sudden rain can cause alot of harm to. It can cause harm to certain crops. It can also affect certain industries. Thus, designing a device which can give a heads-up the instant it starts raining can help in alerting the users about rain and hence giving time to protect whatever can be harmed or spoilt from rain. And, even though rain helps in a lot of processes, it would be good if it can be known when it is raining so that certain arrangements can be made for the successful completion of that task.

Rain sensors are available in both wire and non-wired forms the modern technologies can even inform the user about their devices through an app. The sensor was built on a copper board; the board went under itching process later the path was marked with a black marker which was further dipped into ferric chloride solution (which was prepared by adding few spoons of ferric chloride solution in water). It is basically a system which gets actuated when the sensor (copper board) senses the water droplet on it and triggers a buzzer and red alarm light.A rain sensor is a device that senses rain. It is basically designed to detect water. It is an easy tool to detect rain. It is basically a switch which gets activated by rainfall and causes the buzzer to off and hence alarm the user.

Therefore, in Nigeria where the research was carried out, the activities that was conducted is to know the Principal of Operation of Rain Activated Alarm System with Automated Roofing System.


1.3 Statement of Problem

Investigation reveals that water alarms detect leaks from toilets that have the potential to cause mold growth. Slow leaks from appliances and plumbing fixtures often go unnoticed. Excess moisture and standing water from a slow leak can cause extensive damage to the floors and walls of your home. There is also the potential for mold growth. 1.7 Limitations of the Study

During the course of this study, many things militated against its completion, some of which are:

  1. Time Constraint: The time frame given to accomplish this project was very short due to school academic calendar and it was carried out under pressure which made the researcher not to implement some necessary features.
  2. Research material: availability of research material is a major setback to the scope of the study.
  3. Frequent power failure: This made the researcher append more money on fuel to ensure sustainable power.
  4. Financial Constraint: Insufficient fund tends to impede the efficiency of the researcher in sourcing for the relevant materials, literature or information and in the process of data collection (internet).
