CHAPTER ONE

1.1 Introduction

IP telephony (Internet Protocol telephony) is a general term for technologies, products and services that use the Internet Protocol's packet-switched connections to support voice calling, voicemail, video calling, video conferencing, faxing and instant messaging (IM). Traditionally, these communications have been carried over the dedicated circuit-switched connections of the public switched telephone network (PSTN). Using the internet, calls travel as packets of data on shared lines, avoiding the tolls of PSTN (Techtarget, 2021).

IP telephony works by converting voice calls, faxes and other information into digital signals. These digital signals travel through IP networks, such as the internet, as data packets, using IP packet-switched connections. Voice features within IP technology such as voice calls and voicemail are referred to as voice over IP (VoIP). IP telephony was introduced in 1991 with the creation of the first VoIP application, Speak Freely (Techtarget, 2021).

Internet Protocol (IP) Telephony is the transmission of voice, fax and related services over packet switched IP-based networks. In the longer term, as more and more voice traffic becomes IP data traffic, there will be little to distinguish between IP telephony and circuit-switched telephony. Internet Protocol (IP)-based networks are the latest innovation to offer solutions to such problems and are increasingly being used as alternatives to the traditional circuits switched telephone service. Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) is an upcoming sessions of the developed specifications. The simulation results showed that VoIP can be successfully deployed to provide in a flexible manner, additional data-driven services that requires cost saving, phone portability, service mobility, integration and collaboration with other applications and there is no geographical boundary for the technology.

As a prelude to other parts of this study, this chapter will discuss the background upon which this study was initiated, the statement of problems that led to this study, the Aim and Objectives of the study.
