ABSTRACT

The study assesses the Sustainable Approach to Converting Waste Paint Materials to Useful Products. In achieving this aim, the following specific objectives were laid out to find out the process of Waste Paint Materials conversion to useful products, examine the factors affecting the transformation process waste paint materials to useful products and proffer a comprehensive waste minimization strategy that can be applied to the paint user industry. Primary data were collected from the primary source which questionnaire was used as an instrument of data collection while secondary data were sources from textbooks, journals, newspapers and the internet were employed. The data were presented on a frequency distribution table and analyzed using simple percentage, while hypothesis was tested using chi-square test. Waste paints are classified as hazardous wastes, and on an annual basis, approximately 400 million tons of such wastes are generated globally. The wastes are insoluble in the bitumen matrix to some extent, which would result in gross separation of the two phases. This study will be of immense benefit to researchers who intend to know more on this study and can also be used by non-researchers to build more on their research work. This study contributes to knowledge and could serve as a guide for other study.

CHAPTER ONE

1.1 Introduction

Waste paints are classified as hazardous wastes, and on an annual basis, approximately 400 million tons of such wastes are generated globally (UNEP, 2012). Besides reducing the cost of bitumen, the use of polymer wastes has a high potential of largely reducing the environmental pollution. The wastes are insoluble in the bitumen matrix to some extent, which would result in gross separation of the two phases (Mashaan et al., 2014 and Hınıslıoğlu et al., 2004). As such, the bitumen phase would be dispersed into a continuous polymer phase. It would then be enriched in asphaltenes by the physical distillation of the lighter species from the original bitumen since maltenes would swell the polymers.

As a prelude to other parts of this study, this chapter will discuss the background upon which this study was initiated, the statement of problems that led to this study, the Aim and Objectives of the study.
