1.1 Introduction
The demonstration method is an instructional strategy that involves showing students how to perform a specific task or concept through direct observation and practical examples (Eze, 2019). Social Studies, as a subject, plays a crucial role in the holistic development of students by promoting civic awareness, cultural understanding, and critical thinking skills (Ogunleye, 2018). However, despite its importance, students often struggle with achieving high academic performance in this subject. Traditional teaching methods, which often emphasize rote learning and teacher-centered approaches, may not effectively engage students or enhance their understanding of complex social concepts (Akinwumi & Afolabi, 2020). The demonstration method, characterized by active participation and visual representation of concepts, has emerged as an effective pedagogical strategy in various educational contexts (Owoeye & Yara, 2011). in the context of Social Studies, where practical examples and real-life situations are integral to understanding social dynamics, the demonstration method holds significant potential for enhancing students' academic achievement.
As a prelude to other parts of this study, this chapter will discuss the background upon which this study was initiated, the statement of problems that led to this study, the Aim and Objectives of the study. Others are Significance of the study, Scope of work, Research hypothesis and questions, Limitation of the study and Definition of terms.
1.2 Background of Study
In Nigeria, the need for effective teaching methods in Social Studies became particularly pronounced following the introduction of the subject into the national curriculum in the 1970s. Social Studies was included as a core subject to promote citizenship education and societal awareness among students (Federal Ministry of Education, 1977). Despite its significance, teachers frequently employed traditional lecture-based methods, which often led to disengagement and low academic performance among students (Adeyemi, 2010). Recognizing the limitations of traditional methods, educational stakeholders began advocating for the adoption of more interactive approaches, such as the demonstration method. This method aligns with the constructivist learning theory, which posits that learners construct knowledge through experiences and interactions (Bruner, 1966). The demonstration method encourages active participation, allowing students to observe and practice concepts in real-life scenarios, thus fostering deeper understanding and retention (Owoeye & Yara, 2011).
Research into the effectiveness of the demonstration method in Nigeria gained momentum in the 2000s, with various studies indicating its positive impact on students' academic achievement in subjects like Science and Mathematics (Adeyemi, 2010; Ogunleye, 2018). However, there has been a relative scarcity of empirical studies specifically focusing on Social Studies.
Social Studies is an essential component of the Nigerian educational curriculum, designed to foster civic consciousness, social responsibility, and an understanding of societal dynamics (NCCE, 2012). However, despite its significance, many students exhibit low academic performance and a lack of interest in the subject. Research has shown that traditional teaching methods, which predominantly involve lectures and passive learning, often fail to engage students meaningfully or facilitate deep understanding (Ogunleye, 2018).
The demonstration method, characterized by active engagement and practical application of concepts, has gained traction as an alternative instructional strategy that encourages student participation and enhances comprehension (Owoeye & Yara, 2011). This method allows teachers to illustrate concepts through real-life examples and practical activities, making learning more relevant and accessible for students (Adedoyin, 2020). Various studies indicate that the demonstration method significantly improves students' understanding and retention of material, as it caters to different learning styles and fosters a more interactive learning environment (Akinwumi & Afolabi, 2020). in the Nigerian context, where educational challenges such as inadequate resources and large class sizes persist, it is imperative to explore innovative teaching strategies that can effectively address these issues (Ogunleye, 2018).
Therefore, in Nigeria where the research was carried out, the activities that was conducted is to know the effects of demonstration method on the academic achievement of social studies students in junior secondary schools.
1.3 Statement of Problems
Investigation revealed that the teaching methods employed in junior secondary schools in Nigeria significantly influence students' academic achievement, particularly in subjects such as Social Studies. The demonstration method is often advocated as a more effective instructional strategy compared to traditional lecture-based approaches. However, its implementation in the Nigerian educational context remains inconsistent. Many teachers continue to rely on conventional methods, which often leads to a lack of engagement and lower academic performance among students (Adeyemi, 2010).
More so, there is a limited understanding of the specific effects of the demonstration method on students’ learning outcomes in Social Studies. Existing studies primarily focus on other subjects, leaving a gap in research concerning Social Studies, which is essential for promoting civic awareness and responsible citizenship (Ogunleye, 2018).
Furthermore, many educators lack the necessary skills and resources to implement this method effectively, resulting in inconsistent application in classrooms. As a result, the potential benefits of the demonstration method for enhancing students' understanding and performance in Social Studies are not fully realized (Owoeye & Yara, 2011). It is against the backdrop that this study seeks to address these problems by assessing the effects of demonstration method on the academic achievement of social studies students in junior secondary schools.
1.4 Aim and Objectives of Study
The aim of the study is to investigate the effects of the demonstration method on the academic achievement of Social Studies students in junior secondary schools in Nigeria. In achieving this aim, the following specific objectives were laid out as follows:
