1.0 Introduction
1.1 Background of Study
Over the years, radio broadcasting in Nigeria reflects a dynamic interplay between communication technology, government policy, and societal needs. Radio was first introduced in Nigeria in 1933 by the British colonial government, initially serving as a means of disseminating information and propaganda. The establishment of the Nigerian Broadcasting Corporation (NBC) in 1951 marked a significant milestone in the evolution of radio broadcasting, as it provided a structured framework for radio services across the country (Ugbah, 2020). During the post-colonial era, radio broadcasting in Nigeria underwent considerable expansion, with the establishment of various regional broadcasting stations to cater to diverse linguistic and cultural groups. The introduction of local language programming not only promoted inclusivity but also helped in enhancing listener engagement. By the late 1970s and early 1980s, radio became a crucial platform for political discourse, public enlightenment, and cultural expression (Ibidun, 2019).
The evolution of radio broadcasting in Nigeria can be traced back to the colonial era, when it was introduced as a tool for communication by the British government in 1933. Over the decades, radio has grown to become a vital medium for news dissemination, entertainment, and public enlightenment. Radio's ability to reach remote areas, its affordability, and its accessibility have made it one of the most effective mass communication tools in Nigeria (Ogwezzy-Ndisika, 2018). However, the rise of new communication and information technologies has significantly transformed the landscape of radio broadcasting, introducing both opportunities and challenges.
Radio broadcasting refers to the transmission of audio content to a dispersed audience via radio waves. It is an essential medium for mass communication, providing information, education, and entertainment. According to McQuail (2010), radio broadcasting plays a pivotal role in shaping public opinion and fostering social interaction in society (McQuail, 2010). The advent of new communication and information technologies has profoundly transformed various sectors globally, with radio broadcasting in Nigeria being no exception. As one of the oldest forms of mass communication, radio broadcasting has adapted to incorporate new technologies, enhancing its reach and effectiveness in delivering content to diverse audiences. According to Nwafor (2021), the integration of online platforms has enabled radio stations to expand their audience base beyond geographical boundaries, facilitating real-time interaction and feedback from listeners.
The development of digital technology, particularly the Internet, has enabled radio stations to broadcast online, providing them with the ability to reach global audiences. This shift from traditional broadcasting to digital platforms has not only expanded audience reach but also allowed for greater interactivity between broadcasters and listeners (Onyeka, 2019). Radio stations are now integrating mobile applications, social media platforms, and podcasts into their services to meet the evolving needs of their audience and to remain competitive in the digital age.
As noted by Adeyemi (2020), these new technologies have created more personalized and on-demand content for listeners, enhancing the radio experience (Adeyemi, 2020). Despite the advantages, these changes have also introduced significant challenges for radio broadcasting in Nigeria. The competition from other digital media platforms, such as online streaming services, social media, and podcasts, has increased, pushing traditional radio stations to adapt and innovate. Additionally, the financial investment required to adopt new technologies and train staff to operate in a digital environment can be substantial, particularly for smaller, community-based radio stations (Olatunji, 2021). Therefore, in Nigeria where the research was carried out, the activities that was conducted is to know the effects of new communication and information technology on radio broadcasting.
1.2 Statement of Problems
Investigation revealed that there is lack of adequate infrastructure to support the transition from analog to digital broadcasting. Many radio stations in Nigeria struggle with outdated equipment and limited access to high-speed Internet, which hampers their ability to compete effectively in a rapidly evolving media landscape (Ogunyemi, 2018). This technological gap contributes to disparities in broadcast quality and audience reach, particularly in rural areas where access to new communication technologies is limited.
Furthermore, the regulatory framework governing broadcasting in Nigeria often lags behind technological advancements, creating obstacles for radio stations seeking to adopt new technologies. The bureaucratic hurdles and lack of clarity in policies can stifle innovation and deter investment in digital broadcasting initiatives (Oluwasola, 2022). This environment raises questions about the long-term sustainability of traditional radio in Nigeria and its ability to adapt to the demands of a digital age.
In addition, the evolving media landscape has led to increased competition among radio stations, as they vie for listener attention and advertising revenue in a crowded marketplace. The proliferation of digital content providers not only intensifies competition but also challenges radio broadcasters to differentiate their offerings and develop unique programming that resonates with audiences (Ibidun, 2019). Hence, it is against this backdrop that this study aims to investigate the effects of new communication and information technology on radio broadcasting in Nigeria.
1.3 Aim and Objectives of Study

1.8 Limitations of the Study
During the course of this study, many things militated against its completion, some of which are:
- Delays in Response from respondents in returning questionnaires or participating in interviews was a persistent issue, which impacted the depth and breadth of the data gathered.
- The time frame given to accomplish this project was very short due to school academic calendar and it was carried out under pressure which made the researcher not to implement some necessary features.
- Financial constraints limited the ability to conduct more extensive fieldwork or reach a broader range of participants, while time constraints imposed by deadlines restricted the study's ability to explore certain aspects in greater detail.
