1.1 Introduction
Environmental hazards are defined as physical, chemical, or biological factors in the environment that have the potential to adversely affect human health and well-being (World Health Organization, 2021). These hazards include exposure to polluted air, contaminated water, poor waste disposal systems, flooding, and toxic substances released into the environment through natural processes or human activities. In many developing communities, environmental hazards remain a major public health concern due to weak regulatory systems, inadequate infrastructure, and limited environmental awareness. In Agbarho Community, environmental hazards are increasingly becoming a serious challenge that affects the physical health of residents, especially vulnerable groups such as children, pregnant women, the elderly, and individuals with underlying health conditions. Vulnerable populations are more likely to experience severe health outcomes because their bodies are less able to withstand prolonged exposure to environmental stressors (United Nations Environment Programme, 2019).
As a prelude to other parts of this study, this chapter will discuss the background upon which this study was initiated, the statement of problems that led to this study, the Aim and Objectives of the study. Others are significance of the study, scope of work, research hypothesis and questions, limitation of the study and definition of terms.
1.2 Background of Study
Environmental hazards are widely recognized as one of the major determinants of human health, particularly in low-income and developing communities where environmental regulation and public health infrastructure are often weak. According to the World Health Organization (WHO, 2021), environmental hazards are physical, chemical, and biological agents in the environment that can potentially harm human health, including polluted air, unsafe drinking water, improper waste disposal, flooding, and exposure to toxic substances. These hazards are responsible for a wide range of diseases and health conditions that disproportionately affect vulnerable populations such as children, pregnant women, the elderly, and individuals with weakened immune systems (World Health Organization, 2021).
According to the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP, 2019), environmental degradation continues to increase in many developing regions due to rapid urbanization, industrial activities, and poor environmental governance. UNEP asserted that communities with weak waste management systems and limited access to clean water are more likely to experience higher rates of environmental-related diseases. In many cases, these hazards are not evenly distributed, as marginalized and rural communities often bear the greatest burden of exposure.
In Nigeria, environmental hazards have become a growing public health concern, especially in communities located near industrial activities, oil exploration zones, and areas with inadequate infrastructure. Nwachukwu and Umeadi (2020) reported that oil-producing regions in Nigeria experience significant environmental pollution, including soil contamination, water pollution, and air quality deterioration, all of which contribute to increased health risks among residents. They further stated that prolonged exposure to such environmental conditions results in respiratory disorders, skin infections, gastrointestinal diseases, and other chronic health challenges.
According to Adegoke and Oladele (2021), poor sanitation practices, lack of proper drainage systems, and indiscriminate waste disposal are common in many rural Nigerian communities, leading to frequent outbreaks of waterborne and vector-borne diseases. In Agbarho, flooding during rainy seasons often results in the contamination of drinking water sources, increasing the risk of cholera, typhoid fever, and diarrhea-related illnesses (Adegoke and Oladele, 2021). World Health Organization (2021) contended that vulnerable groups are more likely to experience severe health consequences when exposed to environmental hazards due to their reduced physiological resilience and limited access to healthcare services. Children, for instance, are more susceptible to waterborne diseases because of their developing immune systems, while the elderly often experience complications from respiratory conditions aggravated by polluted air and environmental toxins. Pregnant women are also at risk of adverse birth outcomes when exposed to polluted environments over time.
United Nations Development Programme (UNDP, 2020) affirmed that environmental hazards not only affect physical health but also have broader socio-economic implications. It stated that poor environmental conditions reduce productivity, increase healthcare costs, and deepen poverty levels in affected communities. In rural settings like Agbarho, repeated illness among household members limits economic activities and places additional burdens on families that already struggle with limited income sources. Furthermore, inadequate environmental management systems in many Nigerian communities contribute to the persistence of these hazards.
According to UNEP (2019), weak enforcement of environmental regulations and insufficient public awareness campaigns are key factors responsible for continued environmental degradation. In many cases, residents are unaware of the long-term health implications of improper waste disposal and unsafe water usage, which further increases exposure risks (UNEP, 2019).
This study is set against the backdrop of increasing environmental degradation and its rising impact on the physical health of vulnerable populations in Agadama community, where poor sanitation, flooding, and inadequate waste management continue to expose residents to preventable diseases and health complications.
1.3 Statement of Problems
Investigation revealed that environmental hazards continue to pose significant risks to human health, particularly among vulnerable groups such as children, the elderly, pregnant women, and individuals with pre-existing health conditions. In communities like Agbarho, where exposure to environmental pollutants, poor waste management practices, flooding, and possible oil-related contamination are reported, the physical health of residents tends to be increasingly compromised. Studies have shown that prolonged exposure to polluted air, contaminated water sources, and degraded soil environments is associated with respiratory infections, skin diseases, gastrointestinal disorders, and other chronic health conditions (World Health Organization, 2021).
In Agbarho Community, vulnerable populations are frequently exposed to environmental hazards arising from both natural and human-induced activities. Flooding during rainy seasons often leads to water contamination, which results in outbreaks of waterborne diseases such as cholera and typhoid fever. Industrial and agricultural activities in surrounding areas also contribute to environmental degradation, exposing residents to toxic substances that affect long-term health outcomes (Nwachukwu & Umeadi, 2020).
The situation is further complicated by inadequate drainage systems and poor sanitation practices, which increase the likelihood of disease transmission among residents, particularly children and the elderly who are more physiologically susceptible. It is against this backdrop that this study seeks to examine the impact of environmental hazards on the physical health of vulnerable groups in Agbarho Community.
1.4 Aim and Objectives of Study
The aim of this study is to assess the impact of environmental hazards on the physical health of vulnerable groups in Agbarho Community. In achieving this aim, the following specific objectives were laid out as follows to:
- Examine the types of environmental hazards present in Agbarho Community.
- Determine the level of exposure of vulnerable groups to environmental hazards.
- Assess the physical health effects of environmental hazards on vulnerable groups.
- Identify the environmental factors contributing to health risks in the community.
- Evaluate the effectiveness of existing environmental health management practices in Agbarho Community.
1.5 Research Questions
The study came up with research questions so as to be able to ascertain the above stated objectives. The specific research questions for the study are stated below as follows:
- What types of environmental hazards are present in Agbarho Community?
- What is the level of exposure of vulnerable groups to environmental hazards?
- What are the physical health effects of environmental hazards on vulnerable groups?
- What environmental factors contribute to health risks in the community?
- How effective are existing environmental health management practices in Agbarho Community?
1.6 Research Hypotheses
In order to pursue the objective of this study, the following generalized statements have been designed to guide and aids in obtaining the result for the experiment to be conducted. For this work, the null hypothesis will be represented with H0 while the alternative hypothesis will be represented with hypothesis H1.
Hypothesis One
- H0: Environmental hazards do not have a significant impact on the physical health of vulnerable groups in Agbarho Community
- H1: Environmental hazards have a significant impact on the physical health of vulnerable groups in Agbarho Community
Hypothesis Two
- H0: There is no significant relationship between exposure to environmental hazards and health outcomes among vulnerable groups in Agbarho Community
- H1: There is a significant relationship between exposure to environmental hazards and health outcomes among vulnerable groups in Agbarho Community
1.7 Significance of Study
It is believed that at the completion of the study, the findings will provide reliable data on the extent to which environmental hazards affect the physical health of vulnerable groups. The study will also support community leaders in promoting environmental awareness programs that will improve waste management practices.
Furthermore, the research will contribute to public health knowledge by documenting real-life environmental health conditions affecting rural communities in Nigeria. Lastly, the research will serve as a reference material for students and researchers studying environmental health and community development.
1.8 Scope of Study
The scope of the research is focused on assessing the impact of environmental hazards on the physical health of vulnerable groups, using Agbarho Community in Ughelli North Local Government Area of Delta State as a reference point.
The study was constrained by limited access to reliable secondary data from local health records. It was also affected by respondents' reluctance to provide accurate information due to fear or misunderstanding of the research purpose.
1.9 Limitations of the Study
During the course of this study, there were some problems encountered which stood as limitations to the research work. Some of the limitations include:
- Time Constraint: The time frame given to accomplish this project was very short due to school academic calendar and it was carried out under pressure which made the researcher not to implement some necessary features.
- Financial Constraint: Insufficient fund tends to impede the efficiency of the researcher in sourcing for the relevant materials, literature or information and in the process of data collection (internet, questionnaire and interview).
- Initial Cooperation Delay from Respondents: A particular limitation of this work came as a result of the respondent refusal to offer their cooperation at the initial time they were contacted. This contributed in making the success of this research study difficult.
1.10 Definition of Terms
Environmental Hazards:
Environmental hazards refer to physical, chemical, and biological agents in the environment that may harm human health, including polluted water, air pollution, waste contamination, and flooding (World Health Organization, 2021).
Physical Health:
Physical health refers to the overall condition of the body and its ability to function properly without illness or disease (World Health Organization, 2021).
Vulnerable Groups:
Vulnerable groups are populations such as children, pregnant women, elderly individuals, and people with chronic illnesses who are more susceptible to environmental health risks (United Nations Environment Programme, 2019).
Environmental Pollution:
Environmental pollution refers to the introduction of harmful substances into the environment that causes adverse changes to ecosystems and human health (United Nations Environment Programme, 2019).
Waste Management:
Waste management refers to the collection, transportation, processing, and disposal of waste materials in a safe and environmentally friendly manner (World Health Organization, 2021).
