Characterization, Classification, and Evaluation of Wetland Soils in Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria


Wetland soils are soils formed under conditions of prolonged water saturation that influence their physical, chemical, and morphological properties. The aim of this study is to characterize, classify, and evaluate wetland soils in Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria. The research was motivated by the need to understand the variability of wetland soils in Akwa Ibom State, where increasing agricultural activities occur without adequate soil information. This lack of data affects proper land use planning and sustainable management of wetland resources. Soil samples were collected from profile pits in selected wetland locations. Field observations of soil morphology were recorded, while laboratory analysis determined physical and chemical properties using standard procedures. Soil classification followed USDA Soil Taxonomy, and evaluation was based on FAO land suitability guidelines.

The findings show sand ranges from 28 to 62 percent, clay from 20 to 52 percent, and bulk density from 1.25 to 1.42 g/cm2 with moisture content reaching 45.3 percent. pH varies from 4.8 to 5.6, organic carbon from 2.10 to 3.15 percent, and total nitrogen from 0.18 to 0.28 percent. The outcome of this research further shows Entisols, Inceptisols, and Histosols across sites, with higher clay and organic matter in waterlogged zones and increasing nutrient retention in deeper wetland areas. The study concludes that wetland soils in Akwa Ibom State are hydromorphic, moderately fertile, and spatially variable, requiring proper management for sustainable agricultural use and environmental stability. Based on the findings, it was recommended that Agricultural extension services should educate farmers on the appropriate use of fertilizers and organic amendments, since wetland soils should be managed carefully to balance nutrient availability and prevent soil acidification.

1.1 Introduction

Wetland soils are soils that are formed under conditions of prolonged saturation with water, either permanently or seasonally, resulting in unique physical, chemical, and biological properties that distinguish them from upland soils (FAO, 2006). These soils play significant roles in agricultural production, environmental conservation, water purification, flood regulation, and biodiversity maintenance. Wetlands are among the most productive ecosystems in the world because they provide favorable conditions for crop cultivation, fisheries, forestry, and other socioeconomic activities that support human livelihoods (Mitsch & Gosselink, 2015).

In Nigeria, wetlands occupy substantial portions of the coastal and inland regions and contribute immensely to food production and rural development. Akwa Ibom State, located within the humid tropical rainforest zone of southern Nigeria, possesses extensive wetland environments due to its high rainfall pattern, low-lying topography, and proximity to coastal water bodies. The wetlands in the state are widely utilized for the cultivation of crops such as rice, vegetables, cassava, and sugarcane because of their relatively high moisture retention capacity and fertility status (Esu, 2010).

This chapter will address the background information that motivated this study, the challenges that prompted it, its aim, and its objectives as a preface to subsequent sections of the study. Additional factors include the study's significance, scope, limitations, research questions and hypotheses, and the definition of technical terms.


1.2 Background of Study

Wetlands constitute one of the most valuable natural ecosystems because of their importance in agriculture, biodiversity conservation, water regulation, and environmental sustainability. Wetland soils are generally formed under conditions of excessive moisture or prolonged water saturation, which significantly influence their physical, chemical, and biological characteristics. In tropical regions such as Nigeria, wetlands have become important areas for food production as a result of increasing pressure on upland soils and the growing demand for agricultural land.

Mitsch and Gosselink (2015) stated that wetlands perform important ecological functions such as flood control, groundwater recharge, nutrient cycling, sediment retention, and habitat provision for aquatic and terrestrial organisms. According to the authors, wetlands also contribute significantly to agricultural productivity because they possess conditions that favor crop growth throughout most periods of the year. In many developing countries, wetlands are increasingly being utilized for rice cultivation, vegetable farming, and other intensive agricultural practices aimed at improving food security.

Brady and Weil (2016) reported that soil characteristics such as texture, structure, drainage, color, pH, organic matter, and nutrient composition determine the suitability of soils for agricultural and environmental purposes. According to the authors, proper understanding of soil properties through characterization and classification is essential for sustainable land management and effective agricultural planning. Soil characterization provides detailed information on the morphological, physical, and chemical properties of soils, while soil classification organizes soils into groups based on similar properties and genesis. Soil evaluation, on the other hand, assists in determining the capability and suitability of soils for different land use systems.

In Nigeria, wetlands occupy large portions of both coastal and inland areas and serve as important resources for farming and rural livelihoods. Akwa Ibom State, located in the coastal region of southern Nigeria, is characterized by high annual rainfall, humid climatic conditions, and low-lying topography, all of which favor the formation of wetlands. The state possesses extensive wetland environments that are widely used for agricultural activities, especially crop cultivation and fishing. Esu (2010) asserted that many soils in Nigeria are being utilized without adequate knowledge of their inherent properties and management requirements. According to the author, the absence of detailed soil information often results in poor land use decisions, low crop productivity, nutrient imbalance, and accelerated soil degradation. Wetland soils are highly variable due to differences in parent materials, drainage conditions, vegetation cover, and hydrological regimes. As a result, effective utilization of wetlands for sustainable agriculture requires adequate characterization and classification of the soils.

Lal (2015) affirmed that improper soil management practices such as continuous cultivation, bush burning, deforestation, and poor drainage management contribute significantly to soil degradation in tropical environments. According to the author, soil degradation reduces agricultural productivity and threatens environmental sustainability. In many wetland areas, continuous cultivation without proper soil assessment has resulted in problems such as nutrient depletion, acidity, compaction, erosion, and waterlogging. These conditions negatively affect crop yield and reduce the long-term productivity of agricultural lands.

Akpan-Idiok (2012) reported that soils within the coastal plain sands of southeastern Nigeria exhibit considerable variability in their physicochemical properties due to differences in environmental and geological conditions. According to the author, understanding these variations is necessary for proper soil management and sustainable agricultural development. In Akwa Ibom State, wetland soils are influenced by factors such as coastal sediment deposition, flooding, vegetation, and human activities, all of which affect their fertility status and land use capability.

Soil Survey Staff (2014) stated that soil classification systems such as the USDA Soil Taxonomy provide standardized approaches for grouping soils based on their morphological and analytical characteristics. According to the authors, soil classification enhances communication among soil scientists, researchers, agricultural planners, and land users by providing uniform descriptions of soil properties and behavior. Proper classification of wetland soils is important because it assists in predicting soil responses to management practices and environmental changes.

Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) (2006) reported that wetlands are increasingly threatened by population pressure, urbanization, industrialization, and unsustainable agricultural practices. According to the organization, these activities alter soil properties and reduce the ecological functions of wetlands. In Akwa Ibom State, increasing population growth and economic activities such as farming, construction, sand excavation, and oil exploration are contributing to the degradation of wetland ecosystems. This study is set against the backdrop of increasing agricultural utilization of wetlands, inadequate scientific information on wetland soil properties, and the growing need for sustainable soil management practices in Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria.


1.3 Statement of Problems

Investigation revealed that wetland soils are important natural resources that support agricultural production, biodiversity conservation, water regulation, and environmental sustainability. In Akwa Ibom State, wetlands are extensively utilized for farming activities due to their relatively high moisture content and fertile characteristics. However, the increasing pressure on wetland ecosystems arising from population growth, urban expansion, poor land management practices, and continuous cultivation is resulting in soil degradation and declining productivity. Many of these wetland areas are being cultivated without adequate knowledge of their physical, chemical, and morphological properties, which is contributing to improper land use and poor agricultural output (Brady & Weil, 2016).

Furthermore, the lack of detailed characterization and classification of wetland soils in Akwa Ibom State remains a major challenge to effective soil management and sustainable agricultural development. In many parts of the state, farmers rely mainly on indigenous knowledge and traditional farming practices without scientific information regarding the suitability and capability of the soils for different agricultural purposes (Esu, 2010). It is against this backdrop that this study seeks to characterize, classify, and evaluate wetland soils in Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria.


1.4 Aim and Objectives of Study

The aim of this study is to characterize, classify, and evaluate wetland soils in Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria.

The specific objectives of the study are to:

  1. Determine the physical properties of wetland soils in Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria.
  2. Examine the chemical properties of wetland soils in Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria.
  3. Classify the wetland soils using standard soil classification systems.
  4. Evaluate the suitability of the wetland soils for agricultural production.
  5. Identify the management constraints associated with wetland soils in the study area.

1.5 Research Questions

The study came up with research questions so as to be able to ascertain the above stated objectives. The specific research questions for the study are stated below as follows:

  • What are the physical properties of wetland soils in Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria?
  • What are the chemical properties of wetland soils in Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria?
  • How can the wetland soils in the study area be classified using standard soil classification systems?
  • How suitable are the wetland soils for agricultural production?
  • What are the management constraints associated with wetland soils in the study area?

1.6 Research Hypotheses

In order to pursue the objective of this study, the following generalized statements have been designed to guide and aids in obtaining the result for the experiment to be conducted. For this work, the null hypothesis will be represented with H0 while the alternative hypothesis will be represented with hypothesis H1.

Hypothesis One

  • H0: There is no significant relationship between the physical properties of wetland soils and their agricultural suitability in Akwa Ibom State.
  • H1: There is a significant relationship between the physical properties of wetland soils and their agricultural suitability in Akwa Ibom State.

Hypothesis Two

  • H0: The chemical properties of wetland soils do not significantly influence soil productivity in Akwa Ibom State.
  • H1: The chemical properties of wetland soils significantly influence soil productivity in Akwa Ibom State.

Hypothesis Three

  • H0: Wetland soils in Akwa Ibom State do not differ significantly in classification characteristics.
  • H1: Wetland soils in Akwa Ibom State differ significantly in classification characteristics.

Hypothesis Four

  • H0: Wetland soils in Akwa Ibom State are not significantly suitable for agricultural production.
  • H1: Wetland soils in Akwa Ibom State are significantly suitable for agricultural production.

Hypothesis Five

  • H0: Management constraints do not significantly affect the utilization of wetland soils in Akwa Ibom State.
  • H1: Management constraints significantly affect the utilization of wetland soils in Akwa Ibom State.

1.7 Significance of Study

It is believed that at the completion of the study, the findings will provide scientific information on the properties and classification of wetland soils in Akwa Ibom State for proper agricultural planning. Also, the research will assist in determining suitable crops and management practices for wetland farming in the study area.

Furthermore, the study will support soil scientists and agricultural researchers with data for further studies on wetland soil management. In addition, the findings will help environmental agencies in developing sustainable wetland conservation strategies.

Lastly, the findings will serve as reference material for students and researchers in soil science and related disciplines.


1.8 Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study is limited to the characterization, classification, and evaluation of wetland soils in selected wetland areas of Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria. The research covers soil sampling, laboratory analysis, soil classification, and land suitability evaluation for agricultural production.

However, the study was limited by inadequate access to some wetland locations, insufficient soil data, financial constraints, time limitations, and delays encountered during laboratory analysis.


1.9 Definition of Terms

Characterization:

Characterization refers to the systematic identification and description of the physical, chemical, and morphological properties of soil for the purpose of understanding its nature and behavior (Brady & Weil, 2016).

Classification:

Classification is the process of grouping soils into categories based on similar properties and characteristics using established scientific systems such as the USDA Soil Taxonomy (Soil Survey Staff, 2014).

Evaluation:

Evaluation refers to the assessment of soil suitability and capability for specific agricultural or environmental purposes based on soil properties and management requirements (FAO, 2006).

Wetland Soils:

Wetland soils are soils formed under conditions of prolonged water saturation, resulting in poor drainage and unique physical and chemical characteristics (Mitsch & Gosselink, 2015).

Soil Fertility:

Soil fertility refers to the ability of soil to supply essential nutrients in adequate amounts for proper plant growth and crop production (Brady & Weil, 2016).
