ABSTRACT

The aim of this research is to design and implement an Online NYSC Orientation Camp Traveling Guide that will assist new corp members in reaching the youth service camps safely. Amongst several other objectives that this researcher seeks to achieve at the end of the research, the proposed system will be designed to provide an online mapping platform for corpers to log on to in real time to get information on the camp that they have been posted to. The software will be developed using the Dream Weaver (IDE). The user interface will be developed using the IDE will be the Hypertext Mark Up Language while the automation of the business logic of the application will be done using the PHP web server scripting language. The database that will be used to store the information will be developed and maintained using the MySQL database management system.

CHAPTER ONE

1.1 Introduction

All of us travel at least once in our life and when we are at a new place one of the major issue we face is that being naive to that place we don’t know the roads and routes. There are times when you want to be at a particular place in a new city on time and you start your journey to reach that place on time, but as you are new and at the same time are not aware of the routes you get late. It is a good idea to have a map rather than getting confused about the roads in a new city. Most of the maps provide exact information about the different locations in the city (Christopher, 2010).

In geography maps are one of the most important tools researchers, cartographers, students and others can use to examine the entire Earth or a specific part of it. Simply defined maps are pictures of the Earth’s surface. They can be general reference and show landforms, political boundaries, water, the locations of cities, or in the case of thematic maps, show different but very specific topics such as the average rainfall distribution for an area or the distribution of a certain disease throughout a county. Today with the increased use of GIS, also known as Geographic Information Systems, thematic maps are growing in importance. There are however applications for different types of general reference maps when the different types are understood correctly. These maps do not just show a city’s location for example; instead the different map types can show a plethora of information about places around the world. A road map is one of the most widely used map types. These maps show major and minor highways and roads (depending on detail) as well as things like airports, city locations and points of interest like parks, campgrounds and monuments (Amanda, 2013).

1.2 Statement Of The Problem

The problems faced by corpers when they reach their states of assignment are mentioned below:

  1. They might end up being misled by people who are not conversant with the location of the camps
  2. May enter dangerous places and may be robbed, sexually abused or even get killed.

1.3 Aims And Objectives

The aim of this research is to design and implement Computer

Based NYSC Orientation Camp Traveling Guide that will assist new corp members in reaching the youth service camps safely. This Project will be implemented with a view towards achieving the following objectives;

  1. Provision of an online mapping platform for corpers to log on to in real time.
  2. Provision of a online route mapping based on camp locations in different states of the country.

1.4 Significance Of The Study

Through the successful implementation of this research project, corpers in Nigeria will be able to make it to their designative camps with ease. This will be made possible through the proposed Online NYSC Orientation Camp Traveling Guide System.

Countless lives will be spared the torments of suffering from one bus stop to another looking for how to make it to camps on time.

1.5 Scope Of The Study

The scope of this Project Research will cover the design and implementation of a Computer Based NYSC Orientation Camp Route Decision Making System for members of the Nigerian Youth service Corp to use for the verification of the location of orientation camps.

1.6 Research Methodology

The source of data to be used for this work will come from the internet, libraries and public journals. The solution of the project will be implemented using a three tier distributed architecture with a database server for information storage, a middleware application and a client side application

1.7 Definition Of Terms

Route:

A Route or thoroughfare is a transportation route connecting one location to another. Highways, roads, and trails are examples of thoroughfares used by a variety of traffic. On land a thoroughfare may refer to anything from a rough trail to a multi-lane highway with grade separated junctions; on water a thoroughfare may refer to a strait, channel or waterway. The term may also refer to the legal right to use a particular way as distinct from the way itself.

National Youth Service Corps:

The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) is an organization set up by the Nigerian government to involve the country’s graduates in the development of the country.

HTML:

HyperText Markup Language (HTML) is the main markup language for web pages. HTML elements are the basic building-blocks of webpages.HTML is written in the form of HTML elements consisting of tags enclosed in angle brackets (like), within the web page content.
