1.1 Introduction
Teachers' qualification refers to the educational and professional training a teacher has received to become competent in teaching. It includes qualifications such as the Nigeria Certificate in Education (NCE), Bachelor's degree in Education, Postgraduate Diploma in Education (PGDE), Master's degree and other approved professional certifications. In Nigeria, the NCE is recognized as a minimum qualification for entry into the teaching profession, while teachers are also expected to obtain professional certification and licensing. Academic performance on the other hand refers to the level of achievement students demonstrate through tests, examinations, assignments and other school assessments. Mathematics is an important school subject because it develops students' ability to reason, calculate, solve problems and apply logical thinking to everyday situations. However, students' performance in Mathematics is influenced by several school-related factors, including the quality and qualification of teachers handling the subject.
As a prelude to other parts of this study, this chapter will discuss the background upon which this study was initiated, the statement of problems that led to this study, the aim and objectives of the study. Others are significance of the study, scope of work, research hypothesis and questions, limitation of the study and definition of terms.
1.2 Background of Study
Historically, teacher qualification is closely connected with the development of formal education. In the early stages of organised schooling, teaching was often carried out by people whose main requirement was basic knowledge and the ability to pass information to learners. As education expanded, the need for trained teachers became more recognised. Teacher education gradually developed to provide teachers with both subject knowledge and professional teaching skills. In Nigeria, teacher preparation developed through teacher-training institutions and colleges that provided formal training for classroom teaching. The establishment and expansion of teacher education programmes created different levels of professional preparation, including the Nigeria Certificate in Education. Over time, university-based teacher education also expanded through programmes leading to qualifications such as Bachelor's degrees in Education and postgraduate professional qualifications.
Mathematics is one of the major subjects taught in Nigerian schools and serves as a foundation for many areas of education and employment. It involves numbers, measurements, calculations, patterns, reasoning and problem-solving. According to the Federal Ministry of Education, the minimum qualification for entry into the teaching profession in Nigeria is the Nigeria Certificate in Education (NCE), while teachers are also expected to be certified and licensed to practise. This requirement shows that formal educational and professional preparation is considered necessary for effective teaching. A teacher who has received appropriate training is expected to understand both the subject being taught and suitable ways of presenting it to learners.
According to Omaliko and Okpala (2021), teacher qualification has a significant relationship with students' performance in Mathematics. Their study in Idemili North Local Government Area of Anambra State examined qualifications such as NCE, PGDE, B.Sc., B.Ed., M.Sc. and M.Ed. and found a difference between the performance of students taught by professional and non-professional teachers. Similarly, Jekayinfa et al. (2022) investigated teachers' qualifications and students' performance in Mathematics among junior secondary schools in Zaria, Kaduna State. The study involved students and Mathematics teachers and reported that teachers' qualifications had an important influence on students' Mathematics performance.
Teacher qualification is also important because Mathematics is a subject in which students often need clear explanations and step-by-step guidance. Some mathematical concepts are difficult for learners to understand when they are presented only through memorisation. A properly trained teacher is expected to explain concepts, provide examples, correct mistakes and encourage students to practise. Where the teacher has inadequate subject knowledge or limited professional preparation, students may have difficulty understanding some topics. According to Omieibi-Davids (2023), research in Rivers State involving pupils, teachers and Mathematics performance also examined teacher qualification as a factor associated with academic outcomes. The study used Mathematics competency assessment alongside information on teacher qualification.
This study is set against the backdrop of the continuing importance of Mathematics in Nigerian education and the need to examine whether the qualifications of teachers responsible for teaching the subject are associated with students' academic performance.
1.3 Statement of Problems
Investigation revealed that some schools have teachers handling Mathematics without sufficient academic or professional preparation for the subject. students' performance in Mathematics remains a concern in many Nigerian schools, even though Mathematics is an important subject for further education and everyday activities. On the other hand, students often find Mathematics difficult when concepts are not properly explained.
The existing situation also shows that teacher qualification is not the only issue affecting Mathematics performance. Inadequate teaching methods, limited subject mastery, lack of teaching experience and insufficient instructional materials could also influence students' learning outcomes.
Furthermore, the problem becomes more important where teachers are assigned to teach Mathematics without sufficient preparation in the subject. Also, students require clear explanations, practical examples and proper guidance to understand mathematical concepts. It is against this backdrop that this study seeks to examine the effect of teachers' qualification on the academic performance of students in Mathematics.
1.4 Aim and Objectives of Study

1.7 Significance of Study
It is believed that at the completion of the study, the findings will provide clear information on the relationship between teachers' qualification and students' performance in Mathematics. Also, school administrators will have useful information for making decisions concerning the recruitment and placement of Mathematics teachers.
Furthermore, the study will assist school administrators in making informed decisions about teacher recruitment, subject allocation and professional development. The study will also provide education authorities with relevant information for planning policies concerning teacher qualification and professional training.
Lastly, the study will provide useful material for researchers who intend to investigate teacher qualification and students' academic performance in Mathematics.
1.8 Scope of Study
The scope of the research is focused on the effect of teachers' qualification on the academic performance of students in Mathematics in selected secondary schools in Rivers State, Nigeria. The study covers teachers' educational qualification, professional qualification, subject mastery, teaching experience and teaching methods. It also considers students' academic performance in Mathematics as the dependent variable.
1.9 Limitations of the Study
During the course of this study, there were some problems encountered which stood as limitations to the research work. Some of the limitations include:
- Time Constraint: The time frame given to accomplish this project was very short due to school academic calendar and it was carried out under pressure which made the researcher not to implement some necessary features.
- Financial Constraint: Insufficient fund tends to impede the efficiency of the researcher in sourcing for the relevant materials, literature or information and in the process of data collection (internet, questionnaire and interview).
- Initial Cooperation Delay from Respondents: A particular limitation of this work came as a result of the respondent refusal to offer their cooperation at the initial time they were contacted. This contributed in making the success of this research study difficult.
