Erosion; Causes and Control (A Case Study of Nekede Old Road Gully)


Erosion is the process of soil and land degradation caused by natural forces like rainfall and wind, as well as human activities such as deforestation, construction, and poor drainage systems. The purpose of this study is to examine the causes, effects, and control measures of erosion along Nekede Old Road Gully to provide sustainable strategies for reducing soil loss and protecting infrastructure and farmland. The motivation for this research stems from the increasing severity of gully erosion in Nekede, which threatens roads, farmland, residential buildings, and community safety, creating economic and environmental challenges that require urgent intervention.

Data was collected through structured questionnaires, interviews with residents and local authorities, field observations, and measurements of the gully's dimensions, supplemented by secondary data from reports and previous studies. The findings show that heavy rainfall (28%) and poor drainage (22%) are major causes, while infrastructure damage (30%) and farmland loss (25%) are the most reported effects. Existing measures such as drainage channels (25%) and check dams (20%) exist, but 18% report no effective controls. Furthermore, chi-square analysis confirms poor drainage significantly increases erosion severity.

The outcome of this research indicates that erosion along Nekede Old Road is driven by both natural and human factors, and effective control requires well-maintained drainage, reforestation, proper waste management, and community participation to reduce gully expansion and protect livelihoods. Based on the result obtained from this research, it was recommended that recommended that effective drainage systems should be constructed and regularly maintained along Nekede Old Road to control surface runoff and prevent further gully formation. Also, road construction and other development activities should be planned with proper erosion control measures, including side drains and terracing, to prevent soil loss.

1.1 Introduction

Erosion is defined as the process by which the surface layer of the soil is worn away and transported from one location to another by natural forces such as water, wind, or ice (Pimentel & Kounang, 1998). It is a natural phenomenon that has shaped the earth's landscapes over centuries. However, when accelerated by human activities, erosion becomes a significant environmental problem that affects land productivity, infrastructure, and community livelihoods. In many developing countries, including Nigeria, the intensity and frequency of erosion have increased due to poor land management practices, deforestation, uncontrolled urbanization, and inadequate drainage systems (Adekalu et al., 2006).

In southeastern Nigeria, particularly in Nekede along Nekede Old Road, erosion has become one of the most pressing environmental challenges. The area experiences heavy rainfall, loose and friable soils, and rapid urban development, all of which contribute to the formation of gullies that destroy roads, farmland, and buildings. According to Nwankwoala (2011), gully erosion in the region is predominantly caused by the interaction of natural and human-induced factors, including surface runoff, poor drainage, deforestation, and improper waste disposal.

As a prelude to other parts of this study, this chapter will discuss the background upon which this study was initiated, the statement of problems that led to this study, the Aim and Objectives of the study. Others are significance of the study, scope of work, research hypothesis and questions, limitation of the study and definition of terms.


1.2 Background of Study

Erosion is one of the most significant environmental problems affecting many parts of the world, particularly in developing countries where rapid urbanization, deforestation, and poor land management exacerbate natural soil degradation processes. It is the progressive removal of soil, rock, or other surface materials by natural forces such as rainfall, surface runoff, wind, and river flow (Pimentel & Kounang, 1998). In Nigeria, erosion has become a critical environmental concern, particularly in the southeastern region, where the combination of high rainfall, loose sandy soils, and human activities creates conditions conducive to gully formation and accelerated land degradation. According to Adekalu et al. (2006), soil erosion in Nigeria is increasingly severe and threatens both agricultural productivity and infrastructural development, asserting that unplanned urban expansion and deforestation are major contributors to the problem.

In the context of Nekede, the gully formation along Nekede Old Road has attracted attention due to its rapid expansion and the damage it has inflicted on roads, residential buildings, and public utilities. Reported that the gully has widened over the past decade, threatening both human settlements and transportation networks, researchers contend that this is primarily due to uncontrolled surface runoff exacerbated by poor drainage systems and the removal of natural vegetation (Nwankwoala, 2011). Furthermore, it is affirmed that human activities such as sand mining, deforestation, and improper solid waste disposal are intensifying the rate of soil loss in the area, making it one of the critical hotspots for environmental degradation in southeastern Nigeria (Onyema et al., 2019).

According to Lal (2001), soil erosion contributes to the loss of fertile topsoil, which diminishes agricultural yields and threatens food security. He asserted that in areas where erosion is left unchecked, local communities face significant economic losses due to destroyed farmlands, damaged roads, and other infrastructure. Similarly, Adebayo (2015) stated that gully erosion along major roads and urban settlements imposes heavy financial burdens on government agencies and residents who are forced to invest in recurrent repairs and preventive measures. The cumulative effects of erosion, therefore, extend beyond the physical destruction of land to include disruptions in socio-economic activities, public safety concerns, and increased poverty among affected communities (Adebayo, 2015).

It is further contended that the formation and expansion of gullies are influenced by both natural and anthropogenic factors. According to Ofomata (2000), areas with loose, sandy soils combined with high-intensity rainfall are naturally prone to gully formation. He affirmed that the removal of vegetation cover, which serves as a protective layer preventing soil detachment, significantly accelerates the erosion process. On the human side, it is reported that construction activities, uncontrolled drainage, and the disposal of refuse along road networks contribute to surface runoff, which then scours the soil and enlarges gullies. The interplay between these natural and human factors has made the situation along Nekede Old Road particularly critical, as the gully continues to grow both in width and depth (Ofomata, 2000).

The growing concern over erosion in southeastern Nigeria, particularly along Nekede Old Road, has therefore become a focus of environmental research and policy planning. Researchers contend that a comprehensive study that examines both the causes and control measures of gully erosion is necessary to inform sustainable interventions. According to Nwankwoala (2011), identifying the primary factors responsible for gully formation and assessing the effectiveness of existing control methods are critical steps toward minimizing environmental damage and protecting the livelihoods of affected communities. This study is set against the backdrop of the urgent need to address erosion along Nekede Old Road gully, examining the interplay of natural and human-induced factors while evaluating practical control measures that is useful for sustainable environmental management and community protection.


1.3 Statement of Problems

Investigation revealed that soil erosion has become a major environmental challenge in many parts of southeastern Nigeria, particularly in urban and peri-urban areas where rapid development, poor drainage systems, and improper land-use practices have intensified land degradation. In many communities, erosion is not only an environmental concern but also a socio-economic problem because it destroys farmlands, roads, residential buildings, and public infrastructure. The situation is especially severe in areas with loose, sandy soils and heavy rainfall patterns, which are common characteristics of the region. According to Food and Agriculture Organization, soil erosion is one of the most serious forms of land degradation globally, affecting agricultural productivity, ecological stability, and human settlements (FAO, 2019).

In Nekede, particularly along Nekede Old Road, the development of gully erosion has become a growing environmental issue. The expansion of the gully has led to the loss of valuable land, destruction of nearby structures, and disruption of transportation routes used daily by residents and commuters. Heavy rainfall, combined with inadequate drainage facilities and human activities such as deforestation, sand excavation, and poor waste disposal practices, is contributing significantly to the rapid widening and deepening of the gully.

Furthermore, studies indicate that uncontrolled surface runoff is one of the major factors responsible for gully formation in southeastern Nigeria, particularly where natural vegetation has been removed and the soil structure has been weakened (Ofomata, 2000). It is against this backdrop that this study seeks to examine the causes, effects, and control measures of erosion along Nekede Old Road in Imo State.


1.4 Aim and Objectives of Study

The aim of this study is to investigate the causes of erosion along Nekede Old Road and evaluate practical measures for controlling gully formation.

The specific objectives of the study include:

  1. To identify the primary causes of erosion along Nekede Old Road.
  2. To assess the extent of infrastructural and land damage caused by the gully.
  3. To evaluate the effectiveness of existing erosion control measures in the area.
  4. To recommend practical strategies for preventing further erosion and land degradation.

1.5 Research Questions

Based on the stated objectives, the study seeks to answer the following research questions:

  • What are the major causes of erosion along Nekede Old Road?
  • To what extent has the gully affected roads, buildings, and other infrastructures?
  • How effective are the current erosion control measures in reducing soil loss and gully expansion?
  • What strategies can be implemented to prevent further erosion and promote land stabilization?

1.6 Research Hypotheses

In order to pursue the objective of this study, the following generalized statements have been designed to guide and aids in obtaining the result for the experiment to be conducted. For this work, the null hypothesis will be represented with H0 while the alternative hypothesis will be represented with hypothesis H1.

  • H01: There is no significant relationship between human activities, natural factors, and the expansion of the gully along Nekede Old Road.
  • H02: Human activities and natural factors significantly influence the development and expansion of the gully along Nekede Old Road.

1.7 Significance of Study

The outcome of this research will document successful communication approaches, awareness campaigns, and stakeholder engagement methods that was implemented to influence students' behavior. The study will also provide measurable evidence of decreased cultism activities, improved safety, and strengthened collaboration between school authorities, students, and law enforcement agencies.

Furthermore, the study will provide local residents with practical knowledge and data on gully erosion risks and preventive measures, improving community safety. In addition, the study will enable municipal and state authorities in Imo State to prioritize road maintenance, drainage improvement, and environmental management.

Lastly, the findings will guide policymakers in adopting structured public relations frameworks for conflict resolution and student management. Inclusively, the study will equip urban planners and civil engineers with accurate data on soil characteristics and gully dimensions, guiding future construction and infrastructure projects.


1.8 Scope of Study

The study focuses on the gully erosion along Nekede Old Road, examining its causes, effects, and possible control measures. The research was limited to the road and its immediate surroundings, including residential areas and farmlands directly affected by the gully. Data collection was carried out through field observation, surveys of local residents, and review of secondary data from relevant government and environmental agencies within Imo State.


1.9 Limitations of the Study

During the course of this study, there were some problems encountered which stood as limitations to the research work. Some of the limitations include:

  1. Time Constraint: The time frame given to accomplish this project was very short due to school academic calendar and it was carried out under pressure which made the researcher not to implement some necessary features.
  2. Financial Constraint: Insufficient fund tends to impede the efficiency of the researcher in sourcing for the relevant materials, literature or information and in the process of data collection (internet, questionnaire and interview).
  3. Initial Cooperation Delay from Respondents: A particular limitation of this work came as a result of the respondent refusal to offer their cooperation at the initial time they were contacted. This contributed in making the success of this research study difficult.

1.10 Definition of Terms

Gully:

A gully is a deep channel formed by running water, usually after prolonged rainfall, which removes soil and creates a significant depression in the landscape. It is often a sign of severe erosion (Ofomata, 2000).

Surface Runoff:

Surface runoff is water from rain or other sources that flows over the land surface and is not absorbed into the soil. Excessive runoff contributes to gully formation and soil loss (Adekalu et al., 2006).
