Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs) in Agriculture


Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs) in agriculture are crops whose genetic material is altered to improve yield, pest resistance, and other agronomic traits. This study examines the adoption of GMO crops among farmers in Kaduna State, Nigeria. The purpose of this research is to investigate the socio-economic and regulatory factors influencing GMO adoption, assess challenges faced by farmers, and determine the impact of GMOs on productivity and farm income. The motivation for this research stems from the need to enhance agricultural productivity in Nigeria, improve food security, and understand how socio-economic conditions and policies shape farmers' adoption decisions. Data were collected using structured questionnaires administered to 150 farmers and agricultural extension officers, complemented by interviews and secondary sources from NBMA reports. The findings show that 63.3% of farmers reported improved crop yields, 56.7% observed enhanced pest resistance, and 53.3% experienced increased farm income. Access to credit (53.3%), education (40% secondary), and awareness of NBMA regulations (63.3%) significantly influenced adoption. Challenges included limited access to seeds (56.7%) and insufficient awareness (60%). Furthermore, 66.7% of respondents recommended affordable seeds to improve adoption. The outcome of this research indicates that socio-economic characteristics, regulatory awareness, and institutional support significantly affect adoption. GMO crops increase productivity, improve pest resistance, and raise farm income when supported by effective policies, training, and access to resources. Based on the findings, it was recommended that farmers should be provided with affordable and high-quality GMO seeds to increase accessibility and encourage adoption, especially for smallholder farmers who face financial constraints.

1.1 Introduction

Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs) in agriculture refer to plants, animals, or microorganisms whose genetic material has been altered using modern biotechnology techniques to exhibit traits that are considered desirable, such as resistance to pests, tolerance to herbicides, improved nutritional content, and increased productivity (James, 2018: 12). In the agricultural context, GMOs primarily involve crops that are engineered to withstand biotic and abiotic stresses, thereby offering potential solutions to the persistent challenges of food insecurity, low yield, and environmental degradation in many developing countries.

In Nigeria, agriculture remains a key sector of the economy, providing employment for a significant proportion of the population and contributing to national food security. However, Nigerian farmers face multiple challenges, including pest infestations, diseases, unpredictable rainfall patterns, and soil fertility issues, which limit agricultural productivity (Adewumi, 2019: 47).

As a prelude to other parts of this study, this chapter will discuss the background upon which this study was initiated, the statement of problems that led to this study, the Aim and Objectives of the study. Others are significance of the study, scope of work, research hypothesis and questions, limitation of the study and definition of terms.


1.2 Background of Study

Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs) have emerged as a pivotal innovation in modern agriculture, offering solutions to long-standing challenges such as low crop productivity, pest infestations, and climate-related stresses. According to James (2018: 14), GMOs are organisms whose genetic material is artificially modified to express specific desirable traits, including increased resistance to pests, improved tolerance to herbicides, enhanced nutritional quality, and higher yield potential. The application of biotechnology in agriculture is not only aimed at improving productivity but also at addressing the growing problem of food insecurity, particularly in developing countries like Nigeria, where agriculture is the mainstay of the economy.

Reportedly, Nigeria has experienced significant fluctuations in agricultural output over the past decades due to environmental, economic, and social factors (Adewumi, 2019: 50). Traditional farming practices, reliance on rainfall, susceptibility to pest attacks, and low access to modern farming inputs have limited the capacity of Nigerian farmers to achieve sustainable productivity. In this regard, GMO crops present a potential alternative, offering improved varieties of staple crops such as maize, cassava, rice, and cotton. These genetically modified crops are developed to withstand specific challenges, including viral infections, pest infestations, and poor soil fertility, thereby promising enhanced food production and economic returns for farmers (Olayemi, 2020: 110).

It is affirmed that the global adoption of GMO crops has been accompanied by measurable gains in agricultural productivity. For example, the International Service for the Acquisition of Agri-biotech Applications (ISAAA) reported that between 1996 and 2018, the global area under genetically modified crops increased from 1.7 million hectares to over 190 million hectares, reflecting farmers' recognition of their benefits (James, 2018: 22). In Africa, countries such as South Africa and Burkina Faso have reported significant yield improvements and reduced losses due to pest attacks following the adoption of GMO crops. These successes serve as a point of reference for Nigeria, where policymakers and agricultural stakeholders are increasingly advocating for the integration of biotechnology into national agricultural development strategies (Chukwu, 2021: 91).

Olayemi (2020: 115) stated that misconceptions about the safety of GMO crops, fears of potential health risks, and concerns about environmental sustainability have created resistance among both farmers and consumers. Moreover, the high cost of genetically modified seeds, coupled with limited access to extension services and inadequate training, has further restricted smallholder farmers from adopting these technologies. It is also reported that regulatory and policy frameworks in Nigeria, while intended to facilitate safe biotechnology adoption, have sometimes created uncertainties. The National Biosafety Management Agency (NBMA), established to oversee the safe use of GMOs, faces challenges related to policy implementation, delays in approvals, and limited capacity for monitoring and evaluation (Chukwu, 2021: 95).

Scholars have affirmed that such regulatory bottlenecks undermine investor confidence and slow the pace of innovation and dissemination of GMO crops. In addition, there is a lack of sufficient research and development infrastructure to support locally adapted GMO varieties, resulting in reliance on imported seeds that may not fully suit Nigeria's diverse agro-ecological zones (Akinola, 2018: 70). It is against this backdrop that this study is set to examine the adoption of GMO crops in Nigeria.


1.3 Statement of Problems

Investigation revealed that the adoption of genetically modified organisms (GMOs) in agriculture is increasingly regarded as a potential solution to the challenges of food insecurity, low crop yields, and vulnerability to pests and diseases in Nigeria (Adewumi, 2019: 45). Many farmers is hesitant to adopt GMO crops due to fears surrounding potential health risks, environmental concerns, and the perceived high cost of seeds.

Additionally, policy inconsistencies and regulatory challenges in Nigeria is further hampering the smooth introduction and widespread adoption of GMO crops. Although the National Biosafety Management Agency (NBMA) is mandated to regulate and monitor biotechnology activities, delays in approvals, lack of clear guidelines, and weak enforcement mechanisms is creating an environment of uncertainty for both farmers and investors (Chukwu, 2021: 88).

Furthermore, public perception and societal skepticism surrounding GMOs, fueled by misinformation and negative media reports, is influencing farmers' decisions and limiting market acceptance (Olayemi, 2020: 102). It is against this backdrop that this study seeks to examine the factors influencing the adoption of GMO crops in Nigeria, investigate the challenges and barriers faced by farmers, and evaluate strategies that is needed to promote informed adoption of biotechnology in agriculture.


1.4 Aim and Objectives of Study

The aim of this study is to investigate the adoption of GMO crops in Nigeria and evaluate the factors influencing farmer decisions, the barriers to implementation, and the potential benefits for agricultural productivity and food security. In achieving this aim, the following specific objectives were laid out as follows:

  1. To identify the socio-economic factors influencing the adoption of GMO crops among Nigerian farmers.
  2. To examine the regulatory and policy frameworks affecting GMO crop adoption.
  3. To assess the challenges related to access, awareness, and utilization of GMO crops.
  4. To evaluate the impact of GMO crops on crop yield, pest resistance, and farm income.
  5. To recommend strategies for improving the adoption and sustainable use of GMO crops in Nigeria.

1.5 Research Questions

The study came up with research questions so as to be able to ascertain the above stated objectives. The specific research questions for the study are stated below as follows:

  • What socio-economic factors influence the adoption of GMO crops among Nigerian farmers?
  • How do regulatory and policy frameworks affect the adoption of GMO crops in Nigeria?
  • What challenges do farmers face regarding access, awareness, and utilization of GMO crops?
  • What is the impact of GMO crops on crop yield, pest resistance, and farm income in Nigeria?
  • What strategies will improve the adoption and sustainable use of GMO crops in Nigeria?

1.6 Research Hypotheses

In order to pursue the objective of this study, the following generalized statements have been designed to guide and aids in obtaining the result for the experiment to be conducted. For this work, the null hypothesis will be represented with H0 while the alternative hypothesis will be represented with hypothesis H1.

  • H01: There is no significant relationship between socio-economic factors and the adoption of GMO crops among Nigerian farmers.
  • H02: Socio-economic factors significantly influence the adoption of GMO crops among Nigerian farmers.
  • H03: Regulatory and policy frameworks significantly affect the adoption of GMO crops in Nigeria.
  • H04: Challenges related to access, awareness, and utilization negatively impact GMO crop adoption.
  • H05: GMO crops have a significant positive effect on crop yield, pest resistance, and farm income.

1.7 Significance of Study

The outcome of this research will provide concrete data on the current status of GMO crop adoption in Nigeria, including which crops are being utilized and in which regions, which will help government agencies and private sector stakeholders in planning distribution and commercialization strategies.

Furthermore, the study will document the effectiveness of existing regulatory frameworks and extension services, which will serve as a factual basis for policy revisions and capacity-building initiatives.

Lastly, the findings will contribute to improving national food security by providing real evidence on how GMO crops is impacting yield and pest resistance in Nigeria, enabling more informed decisions about future investments in biotechnology and sustainable agricultural practices.


1.8 Scope of Study

The scope of the research is focused on the adoption of GMO crops in Nigeria, with particular emphasis on maize and cassava farmers in Kaduna State.

The research will examine farmers' experiences, regulatory challenges, and adoption patterns within the state, using data from both public and private agricultural organizations, including the National Agricultural Extension and Research Liaison Services (NAERLS, Kaduna) and local farming cooperatives.


1.9 Limitations of the Study

During the course of this study, there were some problems encountered which stood as limitations to the research work. Some of the limitations include:

  1. Time Constraint: The time frame given to accomplish this project was very short due to school academic calendar and it was carried out under pressure which made the researcher not to implement some necessary features.
  2. Financial Constraint: Insufficient fund tends to impede the efficiency of the researcher in sourcing for the relevant materials, literature or information and in the process of data collection (internet, questionnaire and interview).
  3. Initial Cooperation Delay from Respondents: A particular limitation of this work came as a result of the respondent refusal to offer their cooperation at the initial time they were contacted. This contributed in making the success of this research study difficult.

1.10 Definition of Terms

Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs): Organisms whose genetic material is altered using biotechnology to express desirable traits, such as pest resistance, improved yield, or enhanced nutritional value (James, 2018).

Adoption: The process by which farmers accept, use, and integrate GMO crops into their farming practices (Adewumi, 2019).

Biotechnology: The application of scientific and engineering principles to manipulate living organisms for practical purposes, including crop improvement (Akinola, 2018).

Food Security: The condition in which all people have physical, social, and economic access to sufficient, safe, and nutritious food (FAO, 2020).
