1.1 Introduction
ICT laboratory practice refers to the structured hands-on training and practical engagement of students with information and communication technology tools, software applications, and digital systems within a controlled learning environment designed to enhance technical competence and applied knowledge (UNESCO, 2021). It involves guided practice in computer-based tasks such as word processing, spreadsheet analysis, database management, presentation design, and other office-related applications that are essential for modern workplace efficiency.
Office and Information Management (OIM) students are expected to acquire these competencies as part of their academic training to prepare them for administrative and digital roles in contemporary organizations. In the context of OIM students, academic competence refers to the ability to effectively demonstrate knowledge, skills, and attitudes required to perform office and information management tasks efficiently in both academic and professional settings (Adebayo & Salawu, 2020).
As a prelude to other parts of this study, this chapter will discuss the background upon which this study was initiated, the statement of problems that led to this study, the Aim and Objectives of the study. Others are significance of the study, scope of work, research hypothesis and questions, limitation of the study and definition of terms.
1.2 Background of Study
ICT laboratory practice has become a fundamental component of contemporary business education, especially in the training of Office and Information Management (OIM) students who are expected to possess strong practical and digital competencies for effective office operations. According to UNESCO (2021), ICT integration in education involves the use of digital tools and computer-based systems to enhance teaching, learning, and skill acquisition, particularly in fields that require applied technical knowledge. In tertiary institutions, ICT laboratory practice serves as a bridge between theoretical instruction and practical application, enabling students to develop hands-on skills that are essential for academic success and workplace readiness.
According to Adeoye and Elegbede (2020), ICT laboratory exposure significantly improves students' academic performance by providing them with opportunities to engage directly with computer applications such as word processing, spreadsheets, presentation software, and database systems. These practical experiences allow students to reinforce classroom knowledge and develop competence in performing office-related tasks. In the context of OIM students, academic competence is not only measured by theoretical understanding but also by the ability to apply ICT skills effectively in real-life administrative and organizational settings.
Okoye & Nwafor (2019) reported that in many Nigerian tertiary institutions, ICT laboratory facilities are often inadequate, outdated, or insufficient to meet the increasing demands of digital learning. This situation limits students' access to modern software and reduces the effectiveness of practical training sessions. When students are not adequately exposed to ICT laboratory practice, their ability to develop essential digital skills becomes constrained, thereby affecting their overall academic competence and employability prospects (Okoye & Nwafor, 2019).
According to Akinola and Bello (2021), ICT laboratory practice enhances experiential learning by allowing students to actively participate in problem-solving tasks rather than passively receiving theoretical instruction. This approach improves retention of knowledge and strengthens cognitive and psychomotor skills required for efficient office management. In OIM programs, such practical engagement is crucial because it prepares students for tasks such as document preparation, data analysis, electronic communication, and information management systems.
Salawu & Adebayo (2020) stated that academic competence among students is influenced by the quality of instructional delivery and the availability of functional ICT infrastructure. Where qualified instructors are available to guide students through structured laboratory sessions, there is a noticeable improvement in students' confidence and technical abilities. However, where instructional support is weak or inconsistent, students tend to struggle with practical tasks, which negatively affects their academic outcomes (Salawu & Adebayo, 2020). This study is set against the backdrop of the increasing need to assess how ICT laboratory practice influences the academic competence of Office and Information Management students in tertiary institutions.
1.3 Statement of Problems
ICT laboratory practice is widely recognized as a critical component of modern business education, particularly for Office and Information Management (OIM) students who are expected to demonstrate strong digital literacy and practical competence in handling office technologies. In many tertiary institutions, ICT laboratories are designed to bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical application, yet the effectiveness of these laboratories in achieving academic competence among students remains inconsistent. The extent to which students actively engage in ICT laboratory practice is often influenced by factors such as access to functional equipment, adequacy of trained instructors, and frequency of practical sessions (UNESCO, 2021).
In several institutions, ICT laboratory facilities are either outdated or insufficient to meet the growing demands of digital-based learning. Many OIM students rely heavily on theoretical classroom instruction without sufficient hands-on experience, which reduces their ability to confidently apply ICT skills in real-world office environments. Research has shown that consistent laboratory engagement improves students' problem-solving ability, technical accuracy, and employability skills (Adeoye & Elegbede, 2020).
However, the effectiveness of ICT laboratory practice is also dependent on instructional quality and institutional support. Where qualified instructors and structured practical sessions are available, students tend to demonstrate higher levels of academic competence and digital proficiency. On the other hand, inadequate supervision, irregular laboratory schedules, and poor maintenance of ICT equipment contribute to low student engagement and reduced academic outcomes (Okoye & Nwafor, 2019).
Furthermore, the increasing demand for ICT-skilled graduates in the modern workplace intensifies the need for effective laboratory practice. Employers now expect graduates to possess practical competence in word processing, spreadsheet management, database operations, and other office technologies. When students are not adequately exposed to ICT laboratory practice, their academic competence and employability prospects are negatively affected. It is against this backdrop that this study seeks to examine the effect of ICT laboratory practice on the academic competence of OIM students.
1.4 Aim and Objectives of Study
The aim of this study is to assess how ICT laboratory practice influences the academic competence of OIM students. The specific objectives are:
- To determine the level of ICT laboratory practice available to OIM students
- To examine the extent of students' participation in ICT laboratory sessions
- To assess the relationship between ICT laboratory practice and students' academic competence
- To identify challenges affecting effective ICT laboratory practice in OIM programs
1.5 Research Questions
Based on the stated objectives, the following research questions are raised:
- What is the level of ICT laboratory practice available to OIM students?
- To what extent do students participate in ICT laboratory sessions?
- What is the relationship between ICT laboratory practice and students' academic competence?
- What are the challenges affecting effective ICT laboratory practice in OIM programs?
1.6 Research Hypothesis
In order to pursue the objective of this study, the following generalized statements have been designed to guide and aids in obtaining the result for the experiment to be conducted. For this work, the null hypothesis will be represented with H0 while the alternative hypothesis will be represented with hypothesis H1.
- H0: There is no significant relationship between ICT laboratory practice and the academic competence of OIM students in tertiary institutions in Lagos State.
- H1: There is a significant relationship between ICT laboratory practice and the academic competence of OIM students in tertiary institutions in Lagos State.
1.7 Significance of Study
It is believed that at the completion of the study, the findings will assist government agencies in designing more effective public relations frameworks for youth engagement and anti-cultism sensitization programs. The study will also support university management in implementing structured communication channels that discourage cult recruitment and promote positive student behavior.
Furthermore, the research will provide media practitioners with factual data for accurate reporting and educational content development on the dangers of cultism.
Lastly, the study will serve as a reference point for researchers working on communication strategies and crime prevention in educational environments.
1.8 Scope of Study
The study focuses on Office and Information Management students in selected tertiary institutions in Lagos State, Nigeria, with specific reference to Lagos State Polytechnic and Lagos State University. The study examines ICT laboratory practice, student participation, and academic competence within these institutions.
1.9 Limitations of the Study
During the course of this study, there were some problems encountered which stood as limitations to the research work. Some of the limitations include:
- Time Constraint: The time frame given to accomplish this project was very short due to school academic calendar and it was carried out under pressure which made the researcher not to implement some necessary features.
- Financial Constraint: Insufficient fund tends to impede the efficiency of the researcher in sourcing for the relevant materials, literature or information and in the process of data collection (internet, questionnaire and interview).
- Initial Cooperation Delay from Respondents: A particular limitation of this work came as a result of the respondent refusal to offer their cooperation at the initial time they were contacted. This contributed in making the success of this research study difficult.
1.10 Definition of Terms
ICT Laboratory Practice:
ICT Laboratory Practice refers to the structured hands-on training where students engage with computers and related software to acquire practical ICT skills needed for academic and professional tasks (UNESCO, 2021). It involves guided use of digital tools for learning office-based applications.
Office and Information Management (OIM) Students:
Office and Information Management (OIM) Students refers to learners trained in business education programs focused on office procedures, information handling, and administrative technologies used in modern organizations (Adebayo & Salawu, 2020).
Academic Competence:
Academic Competence refers to the ability of students to effectively demonstrate knowledge, skills, and practical understanding required to perform academic tasks successfully, especially in ICT-related coursework (Okoye & Nwafor, 2019).
ICT Integration:
ICT Integration refers to the use of digital technologies and computer systems in teaching and learning processes to improve educational outcomes and skill acquisition (UNESCO, 2021).
Laboratory Facilities:
Laboratory Facilities refers to the physical and technological resources such as computers, software, and networking tools used to support practical ICT training in educational institutions.
