1.1 Introduction
The term computer application is defined as the use of computer systems and software to perform specific tasks, solve problems, and improve efficiency in various sectors (Laudon & Laudon, 2020). In the context of commercial banking, computer applications are employed to automate operations such as deposit processing, fund transfers, customer account management, and data storage, which were traditionally manual and time-consuming (Ojo, 2019). The adoption of computer applications in banking is not only a response to the increasing demand for speed and accuracy in financial transactions but also a strategic approach to enhance customer satisfaction and competitive advantage (Akinwale & Adeyemi, 2020). Commercial banks operate in a dynamic environment where the ability to process information efficiently is critical. Computer applications enable banks to handle large volumes of transactions, maintain accurate records, and provide real-time services to clients (Chinedu, 2021).
As a prelude to other parts of this study, this chapter will discuss the background upon which this study was initiated, the statement of problems that led to this study, the Aim and Objectives of the study. Others are significance of the study, scope of work, research hypothesis and questions, limitation of the study and definition of terms.
1.2 Background of Study
Computer application in banking refers to the systematic use of computer hardware, software, and telecommunications equipment to record, store, retrieve, and process data used in the daily operations of financial institutions. According to Laudon and Laudon (2020), computer application is described as the deployment of computer systems to perform specific tasks effectively, reduce manual workload, and ensure accuracy. Banking operations that once relied on manual record keeping and prolonged transaction processing are now performed through digital platforms, reducing human error and increasing operational speed. The evolution of computer application across the global banking sector has transformed how banks interact with customers, process transactions, manage accounts, and safeguard financial information.
In Nigeria, the introduction of computer application into banking operations began in earnest in the late twentieth century, following broader global trends in information and communication technologies. According to Osuagwu (2019), the adoption of technology in Nigerian banks was initially motivated by the need to improve managerial control, enhance operational efficiency, and compete with international financial institutions. Banks began implementing mainframe systems, database management tools, electronic funds transfer systems, and customer information systems.
In a study by Nwankwo (2018), it was established that banks that utilize advanced computer systems are able to process large volumes of transactions with minimal human intervention, leading to fewer errors and higher customer satisfaction. Computer applications also allow banks to generate timely financial reports, monitor loan portfolios, and track customer interactions, which improves decision making and regulatory compliance. According to Akinwale and Adeyemi (2020), some Nigerian banks experience difficulties in maintaining robust computer infrastructures due to unreliable power supply, inadequate technical support, and insufficient funding for upgrades. These factors can result in intermittent system failures, slow processing speeds, and data loss. Such drawbacks affect customer trust and may lead to financial losses when critical systems are unavailable.
Chinedu (2021) asserted that banks now require personnel who are not only skilled in financial operations but also proficient in information technology. In many cases, existing staff struggle to adapt to new systems due to limited training opportunities and resistance to change. According to Bello (2022), banking customers increasingly prefer digital channels over physical branch visits because of the speed and flexibility these technologies offer. Mobile banking applications allow users to initiate transfers, pay bills, and check account balances without having to visit a branch, thereby saving time and reducing congestion in bank lobbies.
Eco Bank Plc Owerri, as one of the commercial banks operating in southeastern Nigeria, has embraced computer applications to enhance operational efficiency and service delivery. The bank's adoption of digital systems aligns with broader efforts by the Central Bank of Nigeria to promote financial inclusion and modernize the banking sector. According to Onwuka (2023), Eco Bank Plc has implemented core banking software that links accounts across branches, enabling real‑time processing of transactions and centralized data management. It is against this backdrop that this study seeks to explore the impact of computer application on commercial banking operations at Eco Bank Plc Owerri.
1.3 Statement of Problems
Investigation revealed that the banking sector is increasingly dependent on computer applications to improve efficiency, accuracy, and customer service, yet many commercial banks including Eco Bank Plc Owerri are experiencing challenges in fully integrating these technologies into their daily operations. Many banking activities such as transaction processing, record keeping, and customer relationship management are still performed manually or through outdated systems, leading to delays, errors, and customer dissatisfaction (Ojo, 2019).
Furthermore, the frequent system breakdowns and network issues that arise from under‑optimized computer infrastructures disrupt service delivery, resulting in long queues, failed transactions, and loss of customer confidence (Nwankwo, 2018). There is also the problem of insufficient training for employees on how to effectively use new computer applications, which leads to under‑utilization of available technologies and inhibits the bank's ability to benefit fully from technological investments (Chinedu, 2021). It is against this backdrop that this study seeks to investigate the impact of computer application on commercial banking operations at Eco Bank Plc Owerri.
1.4 Aim and Objectives of Study
The aim of this study is to evaluate the impact of computer application on commercial banking operations at Eco Bank Plc Owerri.
The specific objectives of the study are:
- To examine the effect of computer applications on transaction processing efficiency in Eco Bank Plc Owerri.
- To determine the influence of computer applications on customer service delivery in the bank.
- To assess the role of computer applications in improving record keeping and data management.
- To identify challenges associated with the use of computer applications in the bank.
1.5 Research Questions
Based on the stated objectives, the study seeks to answer the following questions.
- How do computer applications affect transaction processing efficiency in Eco Bank Plc Owerri?
- What influence do computer applications have on customer service delivery in the bank?
- How do computer applications improve record keeping and data management in Eco Bank Plc Owerri?
- What challenges are associated with the use of computer applications in the bank?
1.6 Research Hypotheses
In order to pursue the objective of this study, the following generalized statements have been designed to guide and aids in obtaining the result for the experiment to be conducted. For this work, the null hypothesis will be represented with H0 while the alternative hypothesis will be represented with hypothesis H1.
Hypothesis One
- H0: Computer applications have no significant effect on transaction processing efficiency in Eco Bank Plc Owerri.
- H1: Computer applications have a significant effect on transaction processing efficiency in Eco Bank Plc Owerri.
Hypothesis Two
- H0: Computer applications do not significantly improve customer service delivery in Eco Bank Plc Owerri.
- H1: Computer applications significantly improve customer service delivery in Eco Bank Plc Owerri.
Hypothesis Three
- H0: Computer applications do not significantly enhance record keeping and data management in Eco Bank Plc Owerri.
- H1: Computer applications significantly enhance record keeping and data management in Eco Bank Plc Owerri.
1.7 Significance of Study
It is believed that at the completion of the study the findings will assist management in making informed decisions regarding system upgrades, infrastructure improvement, and staff training. The study will also help the bank design customer-focused technological strategies that meet the expectations of its clientele.
Furthermore, customers will experience better service delivery as the study will encourage improvements in transaction speed, accuracy, and security. In addition, the research will contribute to broader discussions on financial sector reforms and the promotion of a more efficient and secure banking system.
Lastly, this research will add to existing literature on information technology and banking operations. It will serve as a reference material for students, researchers, and scholars who are interested in studying the intersection of computer applications and financial services.
1.8 Scope of Study
The scope of this study is limited to Eco Bank Plc Owerri branch located in Imo State, Nigeria. The research focuses on the impact of computer applications on transaction processing, customer service delivery, and record management within the branch. It does not cover other branches of Eco Bank Plc outside Imo State or other commercial banks operating in Nigeria.
1.9 Limitations of the Study
During the course of this study, there were some problems encountered which stood as limitations to the research work. Some of the limitations include:
- Time Constraint: The time frame given to accomplish this project was very short due to school academic calendar and it was carried out under pressure which made the researcher not to implement some necessary features.
- Financial Constraint: Insufficient fund tends to impede the efficiency of the researcher in sourcing for the relevant materials, literature or information and in the process of data collection (internet, questionnaire and interview).
- Initial Cooperation Delay from Respondents: A particular limitation of this work came as a result of the respondent refusal to offer their cooperation at the initial time they were contacted. This contributed in making the success of this research study difficult.

Computer Application:
Computer Application refers to the use of computer software and hardware systems to perform specific tasks efficiently within an organization. According to Laudon and Laudon (2020), computer applications are programs designed to assist users in performing particular functions such as data processing and information management.
Commercial Banking Operation:
Commercial Banking Operation refers to the day-to-day activities carried out by banks to provide financial services such as deposit acceptance, loan granting, and fund transfers. Rose and Hudgins (2019) described commercial banking operations as structured financial activities aimed at serving individuals and businesses.
