1.1 Introduction
Family planning refers to the ability of individuals and couples to decide freely and responsibly the number of children they want and the spacing of pregnancies through the use of contraceptive methods and appropriate reproductive health services. The World Health Organization stated that family planning helps people determine the number and timing of their children and provides important health benefits by preventing unintended pregnancies and reducing pregnancy-related health risks. Family planning methods include temporary and permanent methods such as condoms, pills, injectables, implants, intrauterine devices and sterilization (WHO, 2025).
In Nigeria, family planning remains an important component of maternal and reproductive health. The 2024 Nigeria Demographic and Health Survey reported that among currently married women aged 15–49 years, total demand for family planning was 41%, while 21% had an unmet need and 20% had their need met. The survey also reported that 92% of women knew at least one modern contraceptive method.
As a prelude to other parts of this study, this chapter will discuss the background upon which this study was initiated, the statement of problems that led to this study, the aim and objectives of the study. Others are significance of the study, scope of work, research hypothesis and questions, limitation of the study and definition of terms.
1.2 Background of Study
Historically, family planning is closely connected with the development of reproductive health and the recognition that individuals should have the opportunity to decide the number and spacing of their children. Early societies used different traditional approaches to control fertility, although many of these methods were not scientifically evaluated and were often unreliable. The development of modern reproductive health gradually changed the way contraception and family planning were understood. According to the World Health Organization (2025), family planning is concerned with helping individuals and couples determine the number and spacing of their children through contraceptive information, services and methods. It is an important part of reproductive health because unintended pregnancies have the potential to create health, social and economic difficulties for women and families. Family planning also supports women's ability to plan pregnancies according to their personal and family circumstances. For women of childbearing age, access to correct information is therefore an important part of making appropriate reproductive health decisions.
According to WHO (2025), contraceptive methods include temporary and permanent options that are used to prevent unintended pregnancy. These include condoms, oral contraceptive pills, injectables, implants, intrauterine devices and permanent methods. Each method has its own characteristics, advantages, limitations and requirements. A woman therefore needs understandable information before choosing a method. Similarly, health education is an important part of preventive health because it provides people with knowledge that supports healthy decisions. In family planning, it involves more than simply telling women that contraceptives exist. It includes explaining how different methods work, how they are used, their expected effects, possible side effects and when professional advice should be sought.
As reported by the United Nations Population Fund, reproductive health services should provide individuals with the information and means required to make free and responsible decisions concerning the number, spacing and timing of their children. The organisation also supports approaches that increase the availability of services, generate demand and improve the quality of reproductive health care. In the same vein, family planning has become an important public health issue in Nigeria because the country has a large population and continues to experience reproductive health challenges. UNFPA reported that Nigeria continues to face low contraceptive prevalence and significant reproductive health needs, making access to quality family planning services an important national concern.
The National Population Commission and ICF (2025) observed that the 2024 Nigeria Demographic and Health Survey found that 92% of women knew at least one modern contraceptive method. The survey also reported that among currently married women aged 15–49 years, total demand for family planning was 41%, consisting of 20% met need and 21% unmet need. Furthermore, family planning decisions are affected by individual and social factors. A woman is likely to consider whether a method is affordable, available, acceptable to her partner, suitable for her reproductive intention and compatible with her understanding of possible side effects.
The study is set against the backdrop of the continuing need to improve informed family planning decisions among women of childbearing age through appropriate and understandable health education.
1.3 Statement of Problems
Investigation revealed that family planning is an important part of reproductive health because it helps women and couples decide the number and spacing of their children. However, knowledge of family planning does not always lead to the selection or continued use of an appropriate method. On the other hand, inadequate health education has the potential to leave women with incomplete or incorrect information about available methods, their benefits, possible side effects and proper use.
Additionally, some women rely on information from friends, relatives and other informal sources rather than trained health workers. The Nigeria Demographic and Health Survey reported that awareness of modern contraceptive methods is high, but unmet need for family planning remains a concern among Nigerian women (National Population Commissio & ICF, 2025).
Furthermore, when health education is properly provided, women are better positioned to understand available family planning options and discuss suitable methods with qualified health workers. The Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare has identified demand creation, quality family planning services and improved access to contraceptive information as important areas of Nigeria's family planning programme (Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, 2020). It is against this backdrop that this study seeks to examine the impact of health education on the choice of family planning methods among women of childbearing age.
1.4 Aim and Objectives of Study
The aim of this study is to examine the impact of health education on the choice of family planning methods among women of childbearing age in Katsina-Ala Local Government Area, Benue State.
The specific objectives of this research are to:
- Examine the level of health education received by women of childbearing age in Katsina-Ala Local Government Area.
- Identify the family planning methods commonly chosen by women of childbearing age in the study area.
- Determine the influence of health education on women's knowledge of available family planning methods.
- Examine the factors influencing women's choice of family planning methods in the study area.
- Determine the relationship between health education and the choice of family planning methods among women of childbearing age.
1.5 Research Questions
The study came up with research questions so as to be able to ascertain the above stated objectives. The specific research questions for the study are stated below as follows:

1.7 Significance of Study
The outcome of this research will provide women with clearer information about the importance of understanding available family planning methods before making a choice. The study will also help health workers understand areas where women require better explanation and counselling concerning contraceptive options.
Furthermore, the result obtained will provide useful local information for strengthening family planning education and counselling programmes in Katsina-Ala Local Government Area. It will also support programme planners in identifying information-related barriers affecting contraceptive choices among women.
Lastly, the findings will provide academic material for students and researchers interested in health education, contraception, reproductive health and women's health.
1.8 Scope of Study
The scope of the research is focused on the impact of health education on the choice of family planning methods among women of childbearing age in Katsina-Ala Local Government Area, Benue State.
1.9 Limitations of the Study
During the course of this study, there were some problems encountered which stood as limitations to the research work. Some of the limitations include:
- Time Constraint: The time frame given to accomplish this project was very short due to school academic calendar and it was carried out under pressure which made the researcher not to implement some necessary features.
- Financial Constraint: Insufficient fund tends to impede the efficiency of the researcher in sourcing for the relevant materials, literature or information and in the process of data collection (internet, questionnaire and interview).
- Initial Cooperation Delay from Respondents: A particular limitation of this work came as a result of the respondent refusal to offer their cooperation at the initial time they were contacted. This contributed in making the success of this research study difficult.
