Influence of Guidance and Counseling Services on Academic Performance of Public Senior Secondary School Students

Guidance and counseling refers to structured school support services that assist students in academic, personal, and career development for improved learning outcomes. The aim is to examine the influence of guidance and counseling services on academic performance of public senior secondary school students in Abuja, Nigeria. The motivation for this study arises from observed variation in students' academic performance across public schools in Abuja, with concerns about limited access to effective counseling support, 70% availability rate, and uneven student awareness affecting learning outcomes. Data were collected using structured questionnaires administered to 200 respondents in selected public senior secondary schools in Abuja.

The findings show that 85 (42.5%) strongly agreed and 70 (35.0%) agreed that academic counseling improves performance, while 90 (45.0%) strongly agreed that career guidance supports decision-making. Furthermore, 88 (44.0%) strongly agreed that personal counseling improves study habits, while 92 (46.0%) identified shortage of counselors as a major challenge. Furthermore, counseling availability recorded 30% strongly available and 40% available responses.

The outcome of this research shows a positive relationship between counseling services and academic performance in the study area. The study concludes that guidance and counseling services significantly influence students' academic performance, study habits, and decision-making in Abuja public senior secondary schools. Based on the result obtained from this research, it was recommended that school administrators should strengthen the establishment and proper functioning of guidance and counseling units in all public senior secondary schools in Abuja to ensure that students have consistent access to academic, career, and personal counseling services.

1.1 Introduction

Guidance and counseling refers to a structured support service within the school system that assists students in understanding themselves, developing appropriate study habits, making informed academic and career decisions, and coping with personal or social challenges that may affect learning outcomes (UNESCO, 2019). In the school context, counseling services are designed to help students achieve holistic development by addressing academic, emotional, and psychological needs in order to enhance overall performance. In Nigeria, particularly in urban education settings such as Abuja, guidance and counseling services are integrated into the school system to support students in navigating academic pressures and career uncertainties. The need for such services has become more pronounced due to increasing cases of poor academic performance, examination anxiety, lack of motivation, and indecision regarding career paths among students. According to Egbo (2013), effective counseling services in schools contribute significantly to improving students' academic engagement, self-awareness, and study behavior, which are essential for better academic outcomes.

As a prelude to other parts of this study, this chapter will discuss the background upon which this study was initiated, the statement of problems that led to this study, the Aim and Objectives of the study. Others are significance of the study, scope of work, research hypothesis and questions, limitation of the study and definition of terms.

1.2 Background of Study

Guidance and counseling services have become an essential component of the educational system, particularly at the secondary school level where students are faced with increasing academic demands, psychological stress, and career decision challenges. According to UNESCO (2019), guidance and counseling in schools is a structured intervention designed to support students in achieving academic success, emotional stability, and informed career development through professional assistance and continuous mentoring. This service is expected to improve students' academic performance by helping them develop effective study habits, manage personal challenges, and make appropriate educational choices.

Egbo (2013) asserted that guidance and counseling services in schools play a significant role in enhancing students' academic performance by improving their self-awareness, motivation, and ability to cope with academic pressure. The author further stated that when students receive adequate counseling support, they are more likely to develop positive attitudes toward learning, set realistic academic goals, and avoid behaviors that may hinder their academic success. In many educational systems, counseling is considered a preventive and developmental tool that supports students throughout their academic journey (Egbo, 2013).

Oladele (2017) reported that effective school counseling services contribute to improved academic outcomes by addressing students' emotional, social, and academic challenges in a coordinated manner. The author contended that students who have access to trained counselors tend to perform better academically than those who do not, as counseling helps to reduce anxiety, improve concentration, and strengthen decision-making abilities. However, in many public schools, especially in developing countries, counseling services are often underutilized or poorly implemented, limiting their potential impact on student performance.

In Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory of Nigeria, public senior secondary schools are experiencing growing concerns about students' academic performance despite the presence of guidance and counseling units. According to Akinade (2012), the effectiveness of counseling services in Nigerian secondary schools depends largely on the availability of trained counselors, institutional support, and student awareness. The author affirmed that where these factors are lacking, counseling services tend to be ineffective in achieving their intended purpose.

Students in public senior secondary schools in Abuja are faced with academic pressures such as preparation for external examinations like WAEC and NECO, competition for higher education opportunities, and personal developmental challenges. According to Yusuf (2018), many students in urban secondary schools experience academic stress and lack of proper guidance, which negatively affects their academic performance. The author contended that counseling services, when effectively implemented, help students manage stress, improve study habits, and enhance academic achievement. On the other hand, where counseling services are well structured and professionally delivered, students tend to exhibit better academic behavior, improved concentration in class, and higher levels of academic achievement. According to Idowu (2016), effective counseling interventions help students identify their academic strengths and weaknesses, thereby enabling them to adopt appropriate learning strategies. It is against this backdrop that this study is set against the backdrop of examining the influence of guidance and counseling services on academic performance of public senior secondary school students in Abuja, Nigeria.

1.3 Statement of Problems

Investigation revealed that academic performance among students has continued to fluctuate, with a noticeable number of learners recording poor outcomes in core subjects despite the presence of school counseling units. According to UNESCO, effective school counseling programs are expected to contribute positively to learners' academic adjustment, motivation, and study habits, yet gaps in implementation often limit their impact (UNESCO, 2019).

In several public senior secondary schools in Abuja, guidance and counseling services are either understaffed, poorly coordinated, or not fully integrated into the daily academic life of students. Studies have shown that when counseling services are well implemented, they assist students in overcoming learning difficulties, improving self-esteem, and making better academic choices (Egbo, 2013).

Additionally, in practice, many students still struggle with issues such as poor study habits, lack of career direction, and examination anxiety. On the other hand, where counseling services are weak or unavailable, students tend to rely on peers or unqualified sources for guidance, which often worsens their academic challenges.

Furthermore, the shortage of trained school counselors and limited awareness among students about the availability of counseling services reduce the overall effectiveness of these programs. The school environment in some cases does not encourage open communication between students and counselors, thereby limiting early identification of academic or behavioral problems that could affect performance. It is against this backdrop that this study seeks to examine the influence of guidance and counseling services on academic performance of public senior secondary school students.

1.4 Aim and Objectives of Study

The aim of this study is to investigate the influence of guidance and counseling services on academic performance of public senior secondary school students in Abuja, Nigeria. In achieving this aim, the following specific objectives were laid out as follows:

  1. To determine the extent to which guidance and counseling services are available in public senior secondary schools in Abuja.

1.7 Significance of Study

It is believed that at the completion of the study, school administrators will use the findings to improve the organization and delivery of guidance and counseling services to enhance students' academic performance. Also, teachers will improve their involvement in identifying students who need counseling support for better academic outcomes.

Furthermore, students will benefit from improved awareness and utilization of counseling services to enhance their academic achievement. In addition, policymakers will strengthen policies on recruitment and training of professional school counselors in public secondary schools.

Lastly, researchers will use the findings as reference material for further studies on counseling and academic performance.

1.8 Scope of Study

The study covers only public senior secondary schools in Abuja Municipal Area Council and focuses on guidance and counseling services in relation to academic performance. It does not include private secondary schools or tertiary institutions, which limits the generalization of findings.

1.9 Limitations of the Study

During the course of this study, there were some problems encountered which stood as limitations to the research work. Some of the limitations include:

  1. Time Constraint: The time frame given to accomplish this project was very short due to school academic calendar and it was carried out under pressure which made the researcher not to implement some necessary features.
  2. Financial Constraint: Insufficient fund tends to impede the efficiency of the researcher in sourcing for the relevant materials, literature or information and in the process of data collection (internet, questionnaire and interview).
  3. Initial Cooperation Delay from Respondents: A particular limitation of this work came as a result of the respondent refusal to offer their cooperation at the initial time they were contacted. This contributed in making the success of this research study difficult.
