1.1 Introduction
Information and Communication Technology (ICT) is defined as the range of digital tools, systems, and resources used to create, store, retrieve, process, and communicate information in various forms to support learning, teaching, and administrative functions in education and other sectors (UNESCO, 2018). ICT includes computers, internet services, multimedia tools, mobile devices, and educational software that enhance access to information and improve the quality of instruction. In the educational context, Information and Communication Technology is widely regarded as a powerful tool for transforming teaching and learning processes by making them more interactive, flexible, and student-centered (Yusuf, 2005).
Business Education is a field of study that prepares learners with knowledge, skills, attitudes, and competencies required for careers in business, office administration, entrepreneurship, and management. As a result, ICT becomes an essential component in Business Education because it supports simulations, data processing, presentations, and real-world business problem-solving (Aduwa-Ogiegbaen & Iyamu, 2005).
As a prelude to other parts of this study, this chapter will discuss the background upon which this study was initiated, the statement of problems that led to this study, the Aim and Objectives of the study. Others are significance of the study, scope of work, research hypothesis and questions, limitation of the study and definition of terms.
1.2 Background of Study
The development of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) in education has evolved significantly over the past decades, shaping how teaching and learning are conducted globally. According to UNESCO (2018), ICT integration in education began to gain global attention in the late 20th century when digital technologies started transforming traditional classroom practices into more interactive and technology-driven environments. The early use of ICT in education was largely centered on computer-assisted instruction, where computers were used to deliver programmed learning content to students in a structured format.

Business Education is an academic discipline that equips learners with knowledge, skills, and competencies required for effective participation in business, office administration, entrepreneurship, and management-related careers. According to Yusuf (2005), Business Education is strongly influenced by technological advancement, especially in areas such as accounting systems, office management, communication, and entrepreneurship development. Yusuf (2005) reported that ICT integration in Business Education is essential because it enables students to acquire practical skills that align with modern workplace demands. Without adequate exposure to ICT tools, students may struggle to meet the expectations of the digital economy.
According to Aduwa-Ogiegbaen and Iyamu (2005), ICT in Nigerian educational institutions is intended to transform teaching and learning by making instruction more interactive, flexible, and student-centered. They asserted that ICT provides opportunities for learners to access updated information, engage in collaborative learning, and develop problem-solving skills. However, they also contended that the implementation of ICT in many schools is hindered by inadequate infrastructure, poor funding, and lack of technical expertise among teachers and students. These limitations directly affect the regularity and effectiveness of ICT usage in academic environments.
Oye, Iahad, and Rahim (2012) stated that ICT has a significant impact on students' academic performance when it is properly integrated into the learning process. They affirmed that regular use of ICT tools such as computers, internet resources, and educational software enhances students' understanding of complex concepts and improves their learning outcomes. However, they also reported that inconsistent access to ICT facilities and lack of training reduce the effectiveness of ICT integration in higher education institutions.
UNESCO (2018) further emphasized that effective ICT integration requires not only access to technological tools but also the development of digital literacy skills among both students and educators. It asserted that ICT is most effective when it is regularly used in instructional delivery and when learners are actively engaged in digital-based learning activities. In addition, UNESCO contended that institutions that consistently integrate ICT into their curriculum tend to produce graduates who are better equipped with 21st-century skills such as critical thinking, communication, collaboration, and digital competence.
Yusuf (2005) stated that, the effectiveness of ICT use in education is not determined solely by availability but also by how meaningfully it is applied in instructional activities. He contended that when ICT is regularly and purposefully integrated into learning, it enhances comprehension, increases motivation, and supports skill acquisition. On the other hand, irregular or superficial use of ICT leads to poor learning outcomes and limits students' ability to develop relevant business and technological competencies.
This study is set against the backdrop of the need to assess how regularly ICT is used and how effective it is in enhancing learning among Business Education students in tertiary institutions.
1.3 Statement of Problems
Investigation revealed that the effectiveness of ICT use is not solely determined by availability but also by how meaningfully these technologies are integrated into instructional practices. Ineffective utilization of ICT may lead to superficial learning experiences, thereby limiting students' preparedness for the technology-driven business environment. On the other hand, when ICT is regularly and effectively utilized, it is expected to foster collaborative learning, critical thinking, and improved academic performance (UNESCO, 2018). The disparity between the expected benefits of ICT integration and the actual experiences of Business Education students creates a significant gap that warrants empirical investigation.
Furthermore, variations in institutional support, students' access to personal digital devices, and attitudes toward technology may influence both the regularity and effectiveness of ICT use. Without a clear understanding of these dynamics, it becomes difficult for educators, policymakers, and curriculum planners to design strategies that enhance ICT integration in Business Education programmes. Consequently, there is a pressing need to examine the extent to which ICT is regularly utilized and how effective it is in facilitating learning outcomes among Business Education students. It is against this backdrop that this study seeks to investigate the regularity and effectiveness of ICT use among Business Education students.
1.4 Aim and Objectives of Study
The aim of this study is to investigate the regularity and effectiveness of ICT use among Business Education students. The specific objectives of the study are to:
- Determine the level of regular ICT use among Business Education students
- Examine the effectiveness of ICT use in enhancing academic performance
- Identify the ICT tools commonly used by Business Education students
- Assess the factors affecting regular ICT usage among Business Education students
- Evaluate the relationship between ICT use and skill acquisition in Business Education
1.5 Research Questions
The study came up with research questions so as to be able to ascertain the above stated objectives. The specific research questions for the study are stated below as follows:
- What is the level of regular ICT use among Business Education students?
- How effective is ICT use in enhancing academic performance of Business Education students?
- What ICT tools are commonly used by Business Education students?
- What factors affect regular ICT usage among Business Education students?
- What is the relationship between ICT use and skill acquisition in Business Education?
1.6 Research Hypotheses
In order to pursue the objective of this study, the following generalized statements have been designed to guide and aids in obtaining the result for the experiment to be conducted. For this work, the null hypothesis will be represented with H0 while the alternative hypothesis will be represented with hypothesis H1.
Hypothesis One
- H0: There is no significant relationship between ICT use and academic performance among Business Education students.
- H1: There is a significant relationship between ICT use and academic performance among Business Education students.
Hypothesis Two
- H0: ICT use has no significant effect on skill acquisition among Business Education students.
- H1: ICT use has a significant effect on skill acquisition among Business Education students.
Hypothesis Three
- H0: There is no significant difference in the regularity of ICT use among Business Education students based on access to ICT facilities.
- H1: There is a significant difference in the regularity of ICT use among Business Education students based on access to ICT facilities.
1.7 Significance of Study
It is believed that at the completion of the study, the findings will help improve understanding of ICT usage patterns among Business Education students and will support evidence-based decision making in educational planning. Also, the study will assist educational administrators in improving ICT infrastructure and will support effective management of ICT resources in tertiary institutions.
Furthermore, the findings will guide lecturers in adopting more effective ICT-based teaching methods and will improve instructional delivery in Business Education. In addition, this research will support policymakers in strengthening ICT integration policies and will enhance digital learning implementation in higher institutions.
Lastly, the findings will contribute to academic literature on ICT adoption in Business Education and will provide reference material for future research.
1.8 Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study is limited to Business Education students in Lagos State University of Education, Nigeria, and focuses only on ICT usage patterns, effectiveness, and related academic outcomes.
The study does not cover other academic disciplines outside Business Education and does not extend beyond the selected institution due to time and resource constraints.
1.9 Definition of Terms
ICT (Information and Communication Technology):
ICT refers to the use of digital tools and systems such as computers, internet services, and software applications that support the creation, storage, and exchange of information in educational settings. According to UNESCO (2018), ICT includes all technologies that facilitate communication and information processing in teaching and learning environments.
Regularity:
Regularity refers to the frequency and consistency with which students engage in the use of ICT tools for academic purposes. According to Yusuf (2005), regular use of ICT enhances familiarity and competence in digital learning environments.
Effectiveness:
Effectiveness refers to the degree to which ICT use contributes to improved learning outcomes, skill acquisition, and academic performance. Oye, Iahad, and Rahim (2012) stated that effective ICT use improves students' understanding and engagement in learning activities.
Business Education:
Business Education refers to an academic discipline that prepares learners for careers in business, office administration, and entrepreneurship by equipping them with both theoretical knowledge and practical skills. Aduwa-Ogiegbaen and Iyamu (2005) asserted that Business Education integrates vocational and technological competencies required in modern workplaces.
Skill Acquisition:
Skill Acquisition refers to the process of gaining practical abilities and competencies that enable students to perform specific tasks effectively in business-related environments. UNESCO (2018) affirmed that ICT supports skill development by providing interactive and practical learning experiences.
