1.1 Introduction
Arabic language is a Semitic language that originated in the Arabian Peninsula and has become one of the most influential languages in the world due to its religious, cultural, and historical importance. According to Versteegh (2014), Arabic is not only a means of communication but also a language that carries a rich intellectual tradition, especially through Islamic scholarship, literature, and religious writings. The language occupies a special position in Islam because the Qur'an and many classical Islamic texts were written in Arabic, making it an essential tool for understanding Islamic knowledge.
In Nigeria, Arabic language has contributed significantly to the growth and preservation of Islamic literature. Islamic literature includes religious writings, historical records, poetry, commentaries, educational materials, and scholarly works that reflect Islamic beliefs and values. According to Umar (2019), Arabic served as a major language of learning among Nigerian Muslim scholars who used it to produce and preserve religious and intellectual works. Through Arabic education, Nigerian scholars have been able to study Islamic texts, interpret religious teachings, and contribute to the development of Islamic scholarship.
As a prelude to other parts of this study, this chapter will discuss the background upon which this study was initiated, the statement of problems that led to this study, the aim and objectives of the study. Others are significance of the study, scope of work, research hypothesis and questions, limitation of the study and definition of terms.
1.2 Background of Study
Arabic language is one of the oldest and most influential languages in human history, with significant contributions to religion, literature, education, and intellectual development. According to Versteegh (2014), Arabic developed from a regional language of the Arabian Peninsula into a global language with strong religious and cultural importance, especially after the emergence of Islam. The language became the medium through which Islamic teachings, scholarly discussions, historical records, and literary works were preserved and transmitted across generations. Its connection with the Qur'an and classical Islamic writings has made Arabic an important language for understanding Islamic knowledge and traditions.
Rippin (2017) reported that the spread of Islam contributed greatly to the expansion of Arabic language and literature beyond the Arab world, as Muslim communities adopted Arabic for religious learning and intellectual activities. The language became a foundation for Islamic scholarship because many important works on theology, law, history, philosophy, and poetry were written in Arabic. Similarly, Ahmed (2018) reported that Arabic literature provided a platform for Muslim scholars to document religious ideas, cultural experiences, and intellectual contributions, making it an important part of Islamic civilization.
In Nigeria, Arabic language has played a significant role in the growth and preservation of Islamic literature. The arrival and spread of Islam in different parts of the country encouraged the establishment of Islamic learning centres where Arabic was taught alongside religious studies. Bobboyi (2017) stated that traditional Islamic education systems in Northern Nigeria used Arabic as a major language of instruction because it enabled learners to access Islamic texts and understand religious teachings. Furthermore, Arabic language has contributed to the development of Islamic literature in Nigeria through scholarly writings, poetry, historical documentation, and religious commentaries. According to Umar (2019), Nigerian Arabic scholars produced works that addressed religious, social, and educational issues, thereby preserving Islamic knowledge for future generations.
Similarly, Suleiman (2021) stated that Arabic literary works produced by Nigerian scholars represent an important aspect of the country's educational and religious heritage. The use of Arabic enabled scholars to communicate with the wider Islamic world and participate in international academic discussions. Along the same line, Hassan (2020) affirmed that Arabic proficiency allows students and researchers to engage directly with original Islamic sources, reducing dependence on translated materials and improving understanding of Islamic concepts.
The role of Arabic language in promoting Islamic literature is also connected with the preservation of cultural identity. Al-Hashimi (2018) articulated that language serves as a means through which communities maintain their historical experiences, values, and intellectual traditions. In Nigeria, Arabic has helped preserve Islamic literary materials that contain religious teachings, moral lessons, historical accounts, and cultural knowledge. These materials continue to influence Islamic education and scholarship across different regions of the country.
This study is set against the backdrop of examining the role of Arabic language in promoting Islamic literature in Nigeria and understanding its contribution to religious, educational, and cultural development.
1.3 Statement of Problems
Investigation revealed that Arabic language has played an important role in the development and preservation of Islamic literature in Nigeria through the transmission of religious texts, scholarly works, and cultural knowledge. However, many challenges exist in maintaining the relevance of Arabic in contemporary Nigerian society due to declining interest among some learners, limited access to Arabic learning resources, and reduced appreciation of classical Islamic writings. On the other hand, inadequate exposure to Arabic education affects the ability of some individuals to fully understand and engage with Islamic literature.
Additionally, the teaching and learning of Arabic language in some Nigerian institutions face challenges such as shortage of qualified teachers, limited instructional materials, and changing educational priorities. These issues affect students' ability to read, interpret, and contribute to Islamic literary works.
Furthermore, the increasing influence of modern languages and digital communication has created concerns about the continued relevance of Arabic in promoting Islamic literature among Nigerian youths. Although Arabic remains widely used in Islamic studies, there is a need to strengthen its teaching and encourage wider appreciation of Islamic literary heritage. It is against this backdrop that this study seeks to examine the role of Arabic language in promoting Islamic literature in Nigeria.

1.9 Limitations of the Study
During the course of this study, there were some problems encountered which stood as limitations to the research work. Some of the limitations include:
- Time Constraint: The time frame given to accomplish this project was very short due to school academic calendar and it was carried out under pressure which made the researcher not to implement some necessary features.
- Financial Constraint: Insufficient fund tends to impede the efficiency of the researcher in sourcing for the relevant materials, literature or information and in the process of data collection (internet, questionnaire and interview).
- Initial Cooperation Delay from Respondents: A particular limitation of this work came as a result of the respondent refusal to offer their cooperation at the initial time they were contacted. This contributed in making the success of this research study difficult.
