1.1 Introduction
Political awareness refers to the level of knowledge, understanding, and consciousness individuals possess about political systems, government activities, public policies, electoral processes, and their civic rights and responsibilities. It enables citizens to make informed political decisions, participate actively in democratic processes, and hold leaders accountable for their actions. Political awareness according to Almond and Verba (1963) forms an essential component of political culture because it influences the extent to which citizens participate in governance and national development. In democratic societies, politically aware citizens contribute to transparent governance, accountability, and sustainable development through informed participation in elections, public debates, and policy discussions.
The rapid advancement of information and communication technology has transformed the way political information is created, shared, and consumed across the world. Traditional media such as newspapers, television, and radio were once the dominant sources of political information, but the emergence of social media has significantly changed political communication.
As a prelude to other parts of this study, this chapter will discuss the background upon which this study was initiated, the statement of problems that led to this study, the aim and objectives of the study. Others are significance of the study, scope of work, research hypothesis and questions, limitation of the study and definition of terms.
1.2 Background of Study
Political awareness is widely recognized as an essential element of democratic governance because it equips citizens with the knowledge required to understand political institutions, public policies, electoral processes, and their constitutional rights and responsibilities. The advancement of information and communication technology has transformed the methods through which political information is produced, distributed, and consumed across the world. According to Castells (2012), the emergence of digital communication technologies has reshaped political interactions by creating platforms that allow citizens to access information instantly and participate in public discourse beyond geographical boundaries.
Similarly, Kaplan and Haenlein (2010) reported that social media platforms have created interactive environments where users generate, exchange, and discuss information in real time, thereby changing traditional patterns of communication. These developments have significantly reduced dependence on conventional media outlets and increased opportunities for citizens to participate directly in political conversations. Among the various social media platforms, Twitter has become one of the most influential tools for political communication. According to Jungherr (2016), Twitter provides users with the opportunity to publish opinions, share political news, comment on current events, and interact directly with political leaders through short messages and hashtags. The platform allows information to spread rapidly, making it one of the preferred channels for political campaigns, election updates, public debates, and civic engagement. Through its interactive features, Twitter encourages immediate public responses to political developments and provides citizens with access to multiple perspectives on national and international issues.
Political leaders, government institutions, journalists, civil society organizations, and citizens increasingly rely on Twitter to communicate political messages and influence public opinion. According to Chadwick (2017), the integration of social media with traditional media has created a hybrid communication system in which political information flows continuously between online platforms, news organizations, and the public. Likewise, Loader, Vromen, and Xenos (2014) asserted that digital platforms have strengthened civic engagement by encouraging greater interaction between political institutions and citizens, particularly among younger generations who rely heavily on social media for information.
The influence of Twitter has become particularly noticeable during election campaigns and periods of political transition. According to Enli (2017), politicians increasingly use Twitter to communicate directly with citizens, present policy positions, respond to public concerns, and mobilize electoral support without relying solely on traditional media organizations. Furthermore, Gainous and Wagner (2014) reported that social media has become an effective instrument for political mobilization because it enables rapid dissemination of campaign messages and facilitates direct engagement between political actors and voters. As a result, political communication has become more immediate, accessible, and interactive than in previous decades.
In many developing countries, social media has contributed significantly to political participation by providing citizens with greater access to political information. According to Egbunike and Olorunnisola (2015), online platforms have enhanced public discussions on governance by creating opportunities for citizens to express opinions and monitor government activities. Moreover, Tufekci and Wilson (2012) stated that social media supports collective political action by enabling individuals to organize campaigns, advocate for reforms, and mobilize support around public issues. This study is set against the backdrop of examining the role of Twitter in promoting political awareness.
1.3 Statement of Problems
Investigation revealed that Twitter has become a common platform for accessing and sharing political information, but the spread of fake news, misinformation, and unverified content affects citizens' understanding of political issues. Also, some users lack the digital skills needed to identify reliable political information. On the other hand, Twitter has created opportunities for citizens to follow political activities, discuss public issues, and interact with political actors, but challenges such as poor internet access, low political interest, and limited online participation reduce its effectiveness.
Furthermore, issues such as political bias, online conflicts, and the spread of misleading opinions affect the ability of Twitter to promote balanced political awareness. Sunstein (2018) stated that social media discussions may become divided when users are exposed mainly to similar opinions. It is against this backdrop that this study seeks to examine the role of Twitter in promoting political awareness among citizens.
1.4 Aim and Objectives of Study
The aim of this study is to examine the role of Twitter in promoting political awareness. In achieving this aim, the following specific objectives were laid out as follows:
- To examine the influence of Twitter on political awareness among citizens.
- To determine the extent to which Twitter provides access to political information.
- To assess the role of Twitter in promoting political participation.
- To identify the challenges affecting the use of Twitter for political awareness.
- To determine measures for improving the effectiveness of Twitter in promoting political awareness.
1.5 Research Questions
The study came up with research questions so as to be able to ascertain the above stated objectives. The specific research questions for the study are stated below as follows:
- How does Twitter influence political awareness among citizens?
- To what extent does Twitter provide access to political information?
- What role does Twitter play in promoting political participation?
- What challenges affect the use of Twitter for political awareness?
- What measures can improve the effectiveness of Twitter in promoting political awareness?
1.6 Research Hypotheses
In order to pursue the objective of this study, the following generalized statements have been designed to guide and aids in obtaining the result for the experiment to be conducted. For this work, the null hypothesis will be represented with H0 while the alternative hypothesis will be represented with hypothesis H1.

1.7 Significance of Study
The outcome of this research will provide useful information for improving the use of Twitter as a reliable platform for political education and public awareness. It will also support efforts to reduce the spread of false political information through improved digital communication practices.
Furthermore, the research will benefit citizens by promoting informed participation in political discussions through credible online information.
Lastly, the findings will serve as relevant academic material for future studies on political communication and social media.
1.8 Scope of the Study
This study focuses on the role of Twitter in promoting political awareness among residents of Lagos State, Nigeria. The study examines how Twitter influences access to political information, political participation, public engagement, and the challenges associated with the use of the platform for political communication.
1.9 Limitation of the Study
The study was limited by the geographical coverage, as only selected respondents in Lagos State were included. Furthermore, access to some respondents was difficult because of their busy schedules, while differences in internet usage and willingness to participate also affected data collection.
