1.1 Introduction
E-learning is the use of electronic technologies, particularly internet-based platforms and digital devices, to deliver, support, and enhance teaching and learning processes. It involves the application of computers, multimedia resources, virtual classrooms, and online instructional materials to facilitate knowledge acquisition beyond the limitations of the traditional classroom environment. According to the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization, e-learning refers to the use of information and communication technologies to improve access to education and strengthen the quality of teaching and learning. Similarly, Clark and Mayer (2016) describe e-learning as instruction delivered through digital devices such as computers and mobile phones that is intended to support learning.
As a prelude to other parts of this study, this chapter will discuss the background upon which this study was initiated, the statement of problems that led to this study, the Aim and Objectives of the study. Others are significance of the study, scope of work, research hypothesis and questions, limitation of the study and definition of terms.
1.2 Background of Study
The evolution of educational technology has significantly reshaped teaching and learning processes across the world. E-learning, which involves the delivery of instruction through electronic media such as computers, mobile devices, and internet platforms, has become a central feature of contemporary education systems. According to the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization, the integration of information and communication technology into education improves access, enhances quality, and promotes inclusive learning opportunities. The growing emphasis on digital literacy and technological competence in the twenty-first century has made e-learning an essential component of secondary education, particularly in science and technology-related subjects.
Globally, scholars have examined the effectiveness of e-learning in improving students' academic outcomes. Clark and Mayer (2016) asserted that well-designed e-learning environments enhance understanding by combining text, visuals, and interactive elements in ways that support cognitive processing. In the same vein, Means et al. (2013) reported that students who participated in online or blended learning environments performed modestly better, on average, than those receiving traditional face-to-face instruction alone.
In Nigeria, the integration of ICT into education has been driven by national policies and global development goals. The Federal Ministry of Education Nigeria stated that the adoption of ICT in schools is necessary for equipping students with relevant digital skills required in a technology-driven economy. Over the years, various initiatives have been introduced to provide computers, internet connectivity, and digital learning resources to secondary schools. However, the degree of implementation varies widely across regions, with urban schools often having better access to technological infrastructure than rural schools. Computer Science occupies a strategic position in the senior secondary school curriculum in Nigeria. The subject introduces students to fundamental concepts such as algorithms, programming, data processing, system design, and problem-solving techniques. Researchers have also explored factors that influence the success of e-learning initiatives. Selwyn (2011) affirmed that access to technology alone does not guarantee improved learning outcomes, as effective utilization depends on teacher competence, student motivation, and institutional support. Similarly, Bates (2015) stated that the pedagogical approach adopted in delivering online instruction plays a critical role in determining its impact on students' achievement.
Furthermore, disparities in infrastructure, electricity supply, and internet connectivity remain major obstacles in many Nigerian schools. Rural schools often face inadequate funding and limited technical support, which restrict the full integration of e-learning platforms. On the other hand, some urban schools have embraced blended learning models that combine classroom teaching with digital resources. The outbreak of global health crises in recent years further accelerated the adoption of e-learning as schools temporarily shifted to online instruction. During this period, many educators and students relied heavily on digital platforms for continuity of learning. Experiences from this transition revealed both the strengths and weaknesses of existing e-learning systems within secondary education. This study is set against the backdrop of increasing technological integration in Nigerian secondary education and the need to ascertain whether e-learning is significantly contributing to improved academic performance in Computer Science among senior secondary school students.
1.3 Statement of Problems
Investigation revealed that the integration of e-learning into secondary education is increasingly transforming the way Computer Science is taught and learned across the globe. In Nigeria, the adoption of digital technologies in education has gained attention as schools strive to align with global technological advancement and the demands of the twenty-first century. Educational bodies such as the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization have recognized e-learning as a strategic approach for improving access to quality education through digital platforms.
Additionally, Computer Science as a subject requires not only theoretical understanding but also practical engagement with programming, simulations, and digital tools. E-learning is expected to enhance interactive learning, provide access to updated resources, and support self-paced study. Studies such as those by Means et al. (2013) suggest that technology-supported instruction is associated with improved learning outcomes when effectively implemented.
Furthermore, disparities exist between urban and rural schools in terms of access to computers, internet facilities, and supportive learning environments. Although government initiatives aim to promote ICT integration in education, the practical realities within many senior secondary schools reveal gaps between policy and implementation. It is against this backdrop that this study seeks to examine the impact of e-learning on the academic performance of senior secondary school students in Computer Science.
1.4 Aim and Objectives of Study
The aim of this study is to examine the impact of e-learning on the academic performance of senior secondary school students in Computer Science.
The specific objectives of the study include:
- To examine how e-learning platforms influence students' understanding of theoretical Computer Science concepts.
- To assess the effect of digital tools on students' practical programming skills.
- To identify challenges students face in utilizing e-learning for Computer Science.
- To evaluate the role of teachers and instructional methods in maximizing the effectiveness of e-learning.
- To provide recommendations for improving the integration of e-learning into senior secondary school Computer Science curricula.
1.5 Research Questions
Based on the objectives, the study seeks to answer the following research questions:
- How does the use of e-learning platforms affect students' understanding of theoretical concepts in Computer Science?
- What is the effect of digital tools on students' practical programming skills?
- What challenges do students encounter when using e-learning for Computer Science?
- How do teachers' methods influence the effectiveness of e-learning in Computer Science instruction?
- What strategies can be employed to improve the integration of e-learning into Computer Science education?
1.6 Research Hypotheses
In line with the study objectives, the following hypotheses are formulated:
- H01: E-learning has no significant effect on the academic performance of senior secondary school students in Computer Science.
- H02: E-learning significantly improves students' understanding of theoretical concepts in Computer Science.
- H03: The use of digital tools positively affects students' practical programming skills.
- H04: Students' academic performance is significantly influenced by the instructional methods used alongside e-learning.
1.7 Significance of Study
It is believed that at the completion of the study, the research will demonstrate methods for integrating digital tools effectively into classroom instruction. The research also will provide evidence for strategic investment in ICT resources.
Furthermore, the findings will guide educators in implementing effective digital instructional strategies, help policymakers in making informed decisions on ICT integration, and support schools in planning for resource allocation.
Lastly, the study will also contribute to the literature on technology-driven education and highlight practical solutions to challenges associated with digital learning.
1.8 Scope of Study
The scope of the research is focused on the impact of e-learning on academic performance of senior secondary school students in computer science in Lagos State, Nigeria.
1.9 Limitations of the Study
During the course of this study, there were some problems encountered which stood as limitations to the research work. Some of the limitations include:
- Time Constraint: The time frame given to accomplish this project was very short due to school academic calendar and it was carried out under pressure which made the researcher not to implement some necessary features.
- Financial Constraint: Insufficient fund tends to impede the efficiency of the researcher in sourcing for the relevant materials, literature or information and in the process of data collection (internet, questionnaire and interview).
- Initial Cooperation Delay from Respondents: A particular limitation of this work came as a result of the respondent refusal to offer their cooperation at the initial time they were contacted.
1.10 Definition of Terms
E-Learning:
E-learning is the use of electronic media, computers, and internet-based technologies to deliver instructional content and facilitate learning. According to Clark and Mayer (2016), e-learning involves structured delivery of lessons using multimedia and interactive tools that enhance cognitive processing and student engagement.
Academic Performance:
Academic performance refers to the measurable outcomes of students' learning, usually assessed through tests, examinations, assignments, and practical assessments. It reflects a student's understanding of course content and mastery of relevant skills.
Computer Science:
Computer Science is the study of computing systems, algorithms, programming, data structures, and problem-solving using digital technologies. According to the West African Examinations Council, Computer Science in senior secondary schools aims to equip students with both theoretical knowledge and practical computing skills.
Digital Tools:
Digital tools include software applications, online platforms, multimedia tutorials, and interactive simulations used to support teaching and learning. These tools enable students to practice programming, create digital projects, and access learning materials outside the traditional classroom.
