ABSTRACT

E-learning refers to the application of internet-based technologies, digital learning platforms, and electronic instructional resources to facilitate teaching and learning without the limitations of physical classrooms. The aim of this study was to statistically analyze the impact of e-learning on student performance using the National Open University of Nigeria as the case study. The motivation for this research arose from the increasing dependence on e-learning for instructional delivery and the need to determine whether its utilization actually improves students' academic performance. The study adopted a descriptive survey research design. The population comprised students of the National Open University of Nigeria, while a sample size of 200 respondents was selected using simple random sampling. Data were collected through a structured questionnaire validated by experts. Descriptive statistics involving frequency tables, percentages, valid percentages, and cumulative percentages were used to answer the research questions, while Pearson Product Moment Correlation was employed to test the hypotheses at a 0.05 level of significance.

The findings revealed that 70.0% of the respondents indicated a high or very high extent of e-learning utilization. Furthermore, 72.0% agreed that e-learning usage had a strong or very strong relationship with academic performance. Internet accessibility recorded a combined 72.0% high and very high influence on the effectiveness of e-learning, while 72.0% affirmed that students' technological competence had a high or very high effect on academic performance. In addition, 70.0% agreed that implementation challenges affected e-learning to a high or very high extent.

The hypothesis tests showed significant relationships between e-learning utilization and academic performance (r = 0.746, p = 0.000), internet accessibility and e-learning effectiveness (r = 0.711, p = 0.000), technological competence and academic performance (r = 0.689, p = 0.000), while implementation challenges had a significant negative relationship with effective e-learning (r = -0.654, p = 0.000). The study concluded that effective utilization of e-learning, supported by reliable internet access and adequate technological competence, contributes significantly to improved student performance at the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN), while reducing implementation challenges is essential for maximizing the benefits of the institution's Open and Distance Learning system. Based on the result obtained, it was recommended that the management of the NOUN should be encouraged to participate in regular digital literacy and technology skills training programmes to strengthen their ability to effectively utilize e-learning platforms and other online academic resources.

1.1 Introduction

E-learning is the use of electronic technologies, particularly internet-based platforms, computers, and mobile devices, to facilitate teaching, learning, communication, and assessment in educational institutions (Arkorful & Abaidoo, 2015). It has become a fundamental component of modern education because it provides learners with flexible access to educational resources irrespective of geographical location and time. The advancement of information and communication technology has accelerated the adoption of e-learning across universities worldwide, particularly in institutions offering open and distance education. In Nigeria, the growing application of digital technology in education has led to significant improvements in the delivery of academic programmes, especially within open and distance learning institutions. The National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) was established to provide quality education through flexible learning methods that depend largely on electronic learning platforms. Through its Learning Management System and other digital facilities, students are able to access course materials, communicate with facilitators, submit assignments, and participate in academic activities remotely (Federal Ministry of Education, 2021).

As a prelude to other parts of this study, this chapter will discuss the background upon which this study was initiated, the statement of problems that led to this study, the aim and objectives of the study. Others are significance of the study, scope of work, research hypothesis and questions, limitation of the study and definition of terms.

1.2 Background of Study

Historically, e-learning is closely associated with the advancement of information and communication technology and the increasing demand for flexible educational systems. According to Arkorful and Abaidoo (2015), e-learning provides learners with opportunities to access educational resources without being restricted by geographical location or time. The increasing availability of information and communication technology has transformed educational delivery across the world, making online learning an important component of modern higher education. Educational institutions have increasingly adopted digital learning environments to improve accessibility, flexibility, and the quality of instruction.

The integration of e-learning into higher education has become a global trend due to the growing demand for flexible learning opportunities. According to Moore, Dickson-Deane, and Galyen (2011), online learning enables students to participate in academic activities through internet-enabled platforms that support interaction, collaboration, and independent learning. Similarly, Garrison and Vaughan (2008) reported that effective e-learning environments encourage active participation, continuous communication, and knowledge sharing between instructors and students. These developments have contributed significantly to expanding access to education, particularly for learners who are unable to attend conventional classroom-based programmes.

The rapid advancement of information and communication technology has reshaped the educational landscape in both developed and developing countries. According to UNESCO (2021), digital technologies have become essential tools for ensuring continuity in education and improving access to quality learning opportunities. Furthermore, Bates (2019) stated that technological innovation has encouraged higher institutions to redesign instructional methods in ways that support learner-centred education. Building on this perspective, Anderson (2008) affirmed that online learning environments provide opportunities for students to learn at their own pace while promoting collaboration through digital communication tools.

In Nigeria, the adoption of e-learning has gained considerable attention, particularly within institutions offering open and distance education. According to the Federal Ministry of Education (2021), information and communication technology has become an important instrument for expanding educational access and improving teaching and learning processes. Moreover, Yusuf (2005) reported that the effective integration of technology into education enhances students' learning experiences by providing diverse instructional resources. The increasing reliance on digital platforms has encouraged universities to invest in technological infrastructure that supports online teaching and academic administration.

The National Open University of Nigeria was established to provide accessible, affordable, and flexible education through the Open and Distance Learning system. According to the National Open University of Nigeria (2023), the university delivers instruction primarily through electronic learning platforms that enable students to access course materials, submit assignments, communicate with facilitators, and participate in online academic activities. Supporting this position, Commonwealth of Learning (2017) asserted that open and distance learning institutions depend largely on digital technologies to achieve their educational objectives and reach learners across diverse geographical locations.

Student performance remains one of the most important indicators of educational success because it reflects the extent to which learning objectives have been achieved. According to Adeyemi (2018), academic performance is commonly measured through examinations, continuous assessments, assignments, and other forms of academic evaluation. Likewise, Biggs and Tang (2011) reported that students' academic achievement depends not only on instructional quality but also on the availability of appropriate learning resources and active engagement in the learning process. Effective utilization of e-learning facilities therefore has the potential to improve students' understanding, knowledge retention, and overall academic outcomes. This study is set against the backdrop of the need to statistically analyze the impact of e-learning on student performance at the National Open University of Nigeria.

1.3 Statement of Problems

Investigation revealed that the adoption of e-learning has significantly transformed the delivery of education in higher institutions by providing students with flexible access to learning materials, virtual classrooms, online assessments, and academic support services. E-learning has become an essential component of open and distance education because it enables learners to study regardless of geographical location and time constraints (Arkorful & Abaidoo, 2015).

Furthermore, variations exist in the level of e-learning utilization among students. While some students make effective use of the university's Learning Management System and other digital learning tools, others encounter difficulties in navigating the platforms or accessing available learning resources. Such differences may contribute to variations in students' academic outcomes, making it necessary to examine the relationship between e-learning utilization and academic performance using appropriate statistical techniques (Moore, Dickson-Deane, & Galyen, 2011). It is against this backdrop that this study seeks to statistically analyze the impact of e-learning on student performance at the National Open University of Nigeria.
