A Study of the Impact of Management Technology on Food Production Systems in Nigeria


Management technology refers to the use of digital tools, software, and platforms to plan, monitor, and optimize agricultural operations. The purpose of this research is to examine the impact of management technology on agricultural productivity, resource utilization, and operational efficiency in Nigerian farms, and to identify challenges and strategies for improving adoption. The outcome of this research was motivated by the need to address inefficiencies in crop production, wastage of resources, and low farm output in Nigeria. Understanding how management technology affects productivity will guide policymakers, farmers, and agricultural organizations in making informed interventions. Data were collected using structured questionnaires administered to 150 farmers and farm managers under the Oyo State Agricultural Development Programme. Key informant interviews and field observations complemented the quantitative data to provide comprehensive insights.

The findings show that mobile advisory platforms are used by 30% of respondents, digital record-keeping by 26.7%, and farm management software by 23.3%. Agricultural productivity increased significantly for 40% of respondents, with 33.3% observing moderate gains. Resource utilization was highly efficient for 36.7% of farmers and moderately efficient for 33.3%. High cost (30%) and low digital literacy (23.3%) were the main challenges. The study concludes that management technology significantly improves productivity and operational efficiency in Nigerian food production systems. Farmers who adopt these technologies experience better crop yields, optimized use of resources, and coordinated farm operations. Targeted strategies such as financial support, training, and improved infrastructure are essential to enhance adoption and maximize benefits.

1.1 Introduction

Management technology refers to the application of modern technological tools, information systems, and management techniques that support planning, organizing, monitoring, and decision-making processes within an organization or production system. In the context of agriculture, management technology includes the use of farm management software, data management systems, digital record keeping, agricultural information platforms, mechanized monitoring tools, and decision-support systems that assist farmers and agricultural managers in improving productivity and operational efficiency. According to the Food and Agriculture Organization, the integration of management technologies into agricultural practices is playing a significant role in transforming traditional farming into more efficient, data-driven, and sustainable production systems (FAO, 2022).

Agriculture is widely recognized as one of the most important sectors in the economic development and food security of many developing countries. Food production systems refer to the organized processes and activities involved in the cultivation, harvesting, processing, distribution, and management of food resources to meet the nutritional needs of a population. As a prelude to other parts of this study, this chapter will discuss the background upon which this study was initiated, the statement of problems that led to this study, the Aim and Objectives of the study. Others are significance of the study, scope of work, research questions, and definition of terms.


1.2 Background of Study

Agriculture has historically played a vital role in the economic and social development of many nations, particularly in developing countries where it serves as a major source of food, employment, and income. Food production systems encompass the various activities, processes, and structures involved in the cultivation, processing, storage, and distribution of food products within an economy. These systems rely heavily on effective management practices, appropriate technologies, and efficient coordination of resources such as land, labor, capital, and information. In recent years, the growing importance of management technology in enhancing agricultural productivity and improving food production systems has gained significant attention among researchers, policymakers, and development organizations.

In the context of Nigeria, agriculture remains one of the most important sectors of the national economy. The sector provides employment for a large proportion of the population, particularly in rural areas, and contributes significantly to food security and national development. Despite its importance, agricultural production in Nigeria continues to face several challenges including low productivity, poor management practices, inadequate infrastructure, and limited access to modern technologies. According to Adebayo Adedeji (2019), agricultural development in Nigeria is largely constrained by inefficient management systems and limited technological integration within food production processes. He asserted that without the adoption of modern management technologies, the agricultural sector may continue to experience low productivity and inefficiencies that affect national food supply.

In agriculture, management technology includes farm management information systems, agricultural databases, mobile advisory platforms, digital monitoring tools, and mechanized planning systems that assist farmers and agricultural managers in organizing farm activities more efficiently. According to the Food and Agriculture Organization (2022), the integration of management technologies in agricultural systems is improving the efficiency of farm operations by enabling producers to make data-driven decisions and optimize the use of available resources. The organization reported that countries that successfully integrate management technologies into their agricultural systems often experience higher productivity and improved food production outcomes.

In Nigeria, however, the adoption of management technology within food production systems remains relatively limited. Many farmers still rely on traditional management practices that involve manual record keeping, informal planning methods, and limited use of modern information systems. According to the World Bank (2020), limited access to modern agricultural technologies, inadequate infrastructure, and low levels of digital literacy among farmers are major barriers to the effective integration of management technologies within the Nigerian agricultural sector. The organization reported that many smallholder farmers lack access to technological tools that support efficient farm management and decision-making processes.

According to the United Nations (2022), Nigeria is one of the fastest-growing populations in the world, and this demographic growth is placing increasing pressure on the country's food production systems. The organization stated that improving agricultural productivity through technological innovation and better management practices is essential for meeting the rising food demand and ensuring national food security. Furthermore, researchers have highlighted the importance of information and communication technologies in modern agricultural management.

Manuel Castells (2010) contended that information-based technologies are transforming economic sectors by improving the flow of information and enabling more efficient coordination of activities. According to Akinwumi Adesina (2018), inadequate policy implementation, insufficient investment in rural infrastructure, and limited access to credit facilities are major constraints affecting technological adoption in agriculture. He affirmed that strengthening technological capacity and improving farm management systems are necessary steps toward transforming food production systems in Nigeria.

The importance of management technology in agriculture is also linked to its potential to improve resource utilization and reduce production inefficiencies. Efficient management technologies enable farmers to monitor crop performance, manage farm inputs, plan production schedules, and evaluate operational outcomes. This study is set against the backdrop of increasing interest in technological innovation and management efficiency as critical factors for improving agricultural productivity and strengthening food production systems in Nigeria.


1.3 Statement of Problems

Investigation revealed that food production systems across the country are still largely characterized by low productivity, inefficient resource management, and limited adoption of modern technologies. Many agricultural activities are still conducted using traditional methods that rely heavily on manual labor, outdated tools, and informal management practices (Food and Agriculture Organization, 2022).

The role of management technology in improving agricultural productivity is becoming increasingly significant in modern agricultural systems. Management technologies such as digital record keeping, data-driven decision making, farm management software, mechanization management systems, and improved information systems are transforming agricultural practices in many developed and emerging economies (International Fund for Agricultural Development, 2021).

In addition, the rapid growth of Nigeria's population is increasing the demand for food, thereby placing significant pressure on existing agricultural systems. Meeting this growing demand requires improved productivity, efficient resource management, and the adoption of innovative management practices.

Furthermore, many studies have focused primarily on agricultural inputs such as fertilizers, improved seeds, and mechanization, while relatively little attention has been given to management technologies that is designed to improve organizational efficiency, information flow, and decision-making processes within agricultural operations. It is against this backdrop that this study seeks to examine the impact of management technology on food production systems in Nigeria.


1.4 Aim and Objectives of Study

The aim of this study is to investigate the impact of management technology on the efficiency, productivity, and performance of food production systems in Nigeria. In achieving this aim, the following specific objectives were laid out as follows:

  1. To identify the types of management technologies currently adopted in Nigerian food production systems.
  2. To assess the effect of management technology on agricultural productivity and crop yields.
  3. To evaluate the impact of management technology on resource utilization and operational efficiency.
  4. To examine the challenges and barriers to the adoption of management technology in Nigerian agriculture.
  5. To provide recommendations for improving the use of management technology in food production systems.

1.5 Research Questions

Based on the stated objectives, the study seeks to answer the following questions:

  • What types of management technologies are currently adopted in Nigerian food production systems?
  • How does management technology affect agricultural productivity and crop yields?
  • What is the impact of management technology on resource utilization and operational efficiency in farms?
  • What challenges hinder the adoption of management technology in Nigerian agriculture?
  • What strategies can be implemented to improve the adoption and effective use of management technology in food production systems?

1.6 Research Hypothesis

In order to pursue the objective of this study, the following generalized statements have been designed to guide and aids in obtaining the result for the experiment to be conducted. For this work, the null hypothesis will be represented with H0 while the alternative hypothesis will be represented with hypothesis H1.

Hypothesis One

  • H0: Management technology has no significant effect on the productivity and efficiency of Nigerian food production systems.
  • H1: Management technology positively affects agricultural productivity in Nigerian food production systems.

Hypothesis Two

  • H0: Management technology improves resource utilization and operational efficiency in Nigerian farms.
  • H1: Management technology improves resource utilization and operational efficiency in Nigerian farms.

1.7 Significance of Study

The outcome of this research will enable development organizations to prioritize resource allocation and capacity-building programs that improve efficiency and food security outcomes. Also, agricultural research institutions will benefit from data on the practical impacts of management technology on food production systems.

Furthermore, farmers will benefit from practical recommendations on which management technologies increase productivity and reduce wastage. In addition, policymakers will use the findings to design informed interventions, subsidies, and digital infrastructure programs that enhance technology adoption.

Lastly, the findings will serve as a benchmark for future technological interventions, showing which management tools will deliver measurable improvements in productivity and efficiency across both smallholder and commercial farms.


1.8 Scope of Study

The study focuses on the application and impact of management technology on food production systems in Oyo State, Nigeria, with particular attention to farms managed by Oyo State Agricultural Development Programme (OYSADEP).


1.9 Limitations of the Study

During the course of this study, there were some problems encountered which stood as limitations to the research work. Some of the limitations include:

  1. Time Constraint: The time frame given to accomplish this project was very short due to school academic calendar and it was carried out under pressure which made the researcher not to implement some necessary features.
  2. Financial Constraint: Insufficient fund tends to impede the efficiency of the researcher in sourcing for the relevant materials, literature or information and in the process of data collection (internet, questionnaire and interview).
  3. Initial Cooperation Delay from Respondents: A particular limitation of this work came as a result of the respondent refusal to offer their cooperation at the initial time they were contacted. This contributed in making the success of this research study difficult.

1.10 Definition of Terms

Management Technology: Refers to the application of tools, systems, and digital platforms that assist in planning, monitoring, decision-making, and operational management in agriculture. This includes farm management software, mobile advisory services, and automated monitoring tools (FAO, 2022).

Food Production Systems: The organized processes involved in cultivating, harvesting, processing, and distributing food, encompassing both subsistence and commercial farming operations (World Bank, 2020).

Productivity: The measure of output generated per unit of input (land, labor, or capital) in a given agricultural operation (IFAD, 2021).
