ABSTRACT

The Role of Management Information System in Effective Productivity with the increase in the number of firms in the soft drink and bottling industry coupled with the external environmental factor of information technology, organization that wants to succeed must braced up with effective and efficient alls. This work was based in Owerri with focus on Diamond Bank Plc, Owerri and the Nigerian Bottling Company Plc, Owerri. in the selection of data of this work, the primary and secondary sources of data were used with questionnaire being a more prominent means of data collection.

The findings of this project work revealed that management information system improved efficiency of decision making and planning which increase employee's performance and increase the attainment of productivity object. The researcher, therefore recommend that organization have independent account met that in manned by trained personal. The findings of this work also proved that MIS also facilitate management control in the organization which enables the management to be aware of the strength and weakness of the organization and have them straightened so as to achieve their goals.

1.0 Introduction

1.1 Background of the Study

As uncertainly increase in business operations as a result of complexities arising from change in business environment, the indispensable role played by information resources because more important if organizations are to succeed in the global village use find ourselves today. The organizational system is composed of numerous sub-systems, such as operational sub-system, a distribution sub-system and human relations. Sub-system interacts with influence and supports each other. If well organized, the results of this interaction are positive for the organization and when poorly managed, the results are not so positive.

The sub-system that connects all these together and internal organization to its environment is the information sub-system. The information sub-system consists of the processes of gathering data, interpreting and bringing them into information and then distributing them throughout the organization. This information lets employee and managers to know where things stand and helps in guiding decision making. This in-turn leads to increase in productivity. Thus, Diury (1984:150) stressed that sound information in the basis of all management and employee's effort the efficient of international operation and enhances the value of organization offering to external world. Today, the quality and quantity of information available for the post. Presently, most Nigeria salesmen, executives, officer etc. are aimed with laptop computers that communicates directly with their headquarter through phone lines.

Historical Background of the Case Study

Diamond Bank Plc began as a private limited liability company; on March 21, 1991 (The Company was incorporated on December 20, 1990). Ten years later, on February 2001, it became a universal bank. On January 2005 following highly successful private placement shares offer which substantially raised the banks equality base. Diamond Bank became public limited company. In May 2005, the Bank was listed on the Nigeria Stock Exchange. Moreover, in January 2008, Diamond Bank global depositary receipts (GBR) was listed on the professional securities market of the London Stock Exchange. The first bank in African to record that feature.

The Nigeria Bottling Company (NBC) was incorporated in November, 1951 as a subsidiary of the A.G leventis Group with the franchise to battle and sell coca-cola products in Nigeria production began in 1953 at a bottling facility in Ebute-Metta, Lagos. Over years production capacity has grown and it presently has 13 bottling facilities and over so distribution warehouse located across the country.


1.2 Statement of the Problem

Organizations have become more complex in recent times technology especially information technology have been seen as a vital tool for any organizational growth no matter the complexity. This research work is designed to measure the roles in which management information system has aided the efficiency and effectiveness of organizational productivity. It is well known that poor management decision making in any organization can result to a setback and also contribute to the bettering of the productivity of any organization.

In view of these problems, this research topic is aimed at examining the ways in which management information system can ensure effective decision making which of course can aid positive productivity in organization with particular reference to diamond Bank Plc and Nigerian Bottling Company in Owerri.

Finally, some employees are seen to be performing below standard and which cannot meet-up to the objective of the organization. The researcher is interested in finding out the management information system in improving the employee's performance.


1.3 Purpose of the Study

Every organization is set-up to achieve some certain goals using the resources. But the resource alone can achieve nothing without the conscious effort of management information system. The purpose of this study is to:

  1. To highlight the importance of development and the effectiveness of information system in organization.
  2. To identify problem of personnel in the management information system in the training and development programs.
  3. To highlight how to determine information that must be relevant to objective concern in decision making.
  4. To determine the feasibilities inherent in installing a management information system in the organization as a whole.

1.4 Research Questions

The following research questions will be used for this project work.

  1. What is the importance of information system in organization?
  2. What are the training and development programs necessary for the personnel's handing the MIS of this organization?
  3. How has the information from MIS motivated the management of the organization indecision making?
  4. What are the feasibilities inherent in installing a management information system in the organization?

1.5 Significance of the Study

This work, when successfully completed and its recommendation implemented will enhance efficiency of organizational operation in the following ways:

This study will avail organization opportunity to channel their resources in the right management information system that enables them discern between that and good information that will facilitate operation efficiency.

Most services firms in the economy which cannot function properly. Without adequate supply of information that will stand to benefit from this study by acquitting themselves with the current development in information technology and improve services. This study will reveal the impact of technological environment on management information system and how organization cushions the effect especially with continuous changes of software on management information system (MIS).


1.6 Scope / Delimitation of the Study

This project work will focus on Diamond Bank Plc Owerri Imo State while the scope will cover a conceptual theoretical frame work of management information system.


1.7 Limitation of the Study

This project suffers some difficulties due to:

  1. Lack of finance
  2. Time of research facilities
  3. Dearth of information

The following were some problems encountered during this research process (although they do not in any way invalidate the validity of this research). Time is a serious constraint in this research because the researcher will intermittently have to stop work on the project in order to attend lectures and do some other assignment.


1.8 Definition of Terms

Management:

This is the process of achieving organizational objectivities or goals effectively through the use of human and other resources.

Efficiency:

Management of how resources are utilized to reduce out put.

Effectiveness:

The achievement of objective and goals. Also it is the production of desires results.

System:

An organizational set of related component established to accomplish a certain task.

Information:

This is the data ordered to be applicable in decision making and behaviour control.

Data:

These are unorganized facts, measurement or statistics about event.
