1.1 Introduction
Road traffic accidents refer to unexpected events involving one or more vehicles on a public road that result in death, injury, or damage to property (World Health Organization, 2023). They are recognized as one of the leading causes of mortality and physical injuries worldwide, particularly in low and middle-income countries where rapid urbanization, increasing vehicle ownership, and inadequate road infrastructure contribute to the problem. In Nigeria, road traffic accidents continue to pose serious social and economic challenges because they affect individuals, families, and national development (Federal Road Safety Corps, 2021).
Statistical analysis is the process of collecting, organizing, presenting, analyzing, and interpreting data to obtain meaningful information for decision-making (Gupta & Kapoor, 2020). In the study of road traffic accidents, statistical techniques help to identify patterns, trends, and variations in accident occurrences over a given period. Such analysis provides evidence that supports planning, policy formulation, and the evaluation of road safety programmes.
Road traffic accidents in Nigeria have been linked to factors such as excessive speed, reckless driving, poor road conditions, mechanical failures, and violation of traffic regulations. Despite efforts by government agencies and road safety authorities to reduce crashes through public awareness campaigns, law enforcement, and road improvements, accidents continue to occur across many states, including Imo State (World Health Organization, 2023).
As a prelude to other parts of this study, this chapter will discuss the background upon which this study was initiated, the statement of problems that led to this study, the aim and objectives of the study. Others are significance of the study, scope of work, research hypothesis and questions, limitation of the study and definition of terms.
1.2 Background of Study
Road traffic accidents have become a major global challenge due to their negative effects on human lives, economic activities, and social development. Road traffic accidents refer to unexpected incidents involving vehicles, pedestrians, or other road users that result in injuries, fatalities, or property damage. According to the World Health Organization (2023), road traffic injuries remain one of the leading causes of death worldwide, with a greater burden experienced in low and middle-income countries due to rapid population growth, increased vehicle usage, and weaknesses in road safety systems. The occurrence of road traffic accidents has continued to attract attention from researchers, governments, and safety organizations because of the need to understand their causes, patterns, and consequences.
According to the Federal Road Safety Corps (2021), road traffic crashes in Nigeria have remained a serious public safety issue, with human factors such as speeding, dangerous driving, and disregard for traffic regulations contributing significantly to accident occurrences. The agency reported that effective accident prevention requires proper documentation, analysis, and interpretation of crash data to identify areas requiring intervention. Similarly, Odero et al. (2018) reported that developing countries experience a high rate of road traffic accidents because of inadequate transportation planning, poor road conditions, and limited enforcement of safety regulations.
Statistical analysis plays an important role in studying road traffic accidents because it provides a systematic approach for examining collected data and identifying meaningful patterns. According to Gupta and Kapoor (2020), statistical methods help researchers organize, summarize, and interpret numerical information to support decision-making. In the context of road safety, statistical analysis helps to determine accident frequency, yearly variations, and possible changes in the occurrence of crashes over time. Furthermore, Aderamo (2012) asserted that analyzing road accident data is essential for identifying high-risk areas and developing strategies that improve transportation safety.
Nigeria has experienced continuous growth in population, urbanization, and transportation activities, which have contributed to increased pressure on road networks. According to Atubi (2010), the rising number of vehicles and increased movement of people and goods have created challenges in managing road safety effectively. The study reported that road traffic accidents in Nigeria are associated with multiple factors, including driver behavior, road infrastructure conditions, environmental factors, and vehicle-related problems. In the same vein, Agbonkhese, Yisa, Agbonkhese, Akanbi, Aka, and Mondigha (2013) stated that poor road conditions and inadequate maintenance contribute significantly to road accidents in Nigeria. These factors highlight the importance of continuous monitoring and evaluation of accident records.
Imo State, located in southeastern Nigeria, has experienced increased transportation activities due to its commercial importance and growing urban centres. The state has several major roads that connect communities within and outside the region, resulting in frequent movement of vehicles and passengers. According to Nwankwo and Uche (2019), increased traffic volume without corresponding improvements in road infrastructure and safety management contributes to higher risks of road crashes. The reported cases of road traffic accidents in Imo State between 1997 and 2003 provide important data for examining the nature and trend of road crashes during the period.
Moreover, studying reported accident cases through statistical analysis helps to reveal whether accident occurrences increased, reduced, or remained consistent over the years. According to Peden et al. (2018), accurate accident records and proper data analysis are essential tools for developing evidence-based road safety policies. Supporting this position, Etebu and Eze (2020) affirmed that statistical evaluation of accident information enables stakeholders to understand accident patterns and determine appropriate safety interventions.
This study is set against the backdrop of the need to apply statistical techniques in examining reported cases of road traffic accidents in Imo State from 1997 to 2003 and providing reliable information for effective accident prevention and management.
1.3 Statement of Problems
Investigation revealed that road traffic accidents have remained a major public safety concern in Nigeria, leading to loss of lives, injuries, disability, and damage to property. In Imo State, reported accident cases between 1997 and 2003 indicate that road crashes occurred repeatedly despite road safety campaigns and traffic regulations. On the other hand, the increasing number of reported cases raises concerns about the pattern and trend of these accidents, making it necessary to examine the available data using statistical methods to support informed decision-making (Federal Road Safety Corps, 2021).
Additionally, road traffic accidents are influenced by several factors such as reckless driving, poor road conditions, over-speeding, mechanical faults, and failure to obey traffic rules. Although accident records are collected by relevant agencies, many studies have focused more on the causes and effects of road crashes than on the statistical pattern of reported cases over time (World Health Organization, 2023).
Furthermore, analyzing reported road traffic accident data for Imo State from 1997 to 2003 will provide useful information on the nature and trend of accidents within the study period. The findings are expected to assist policymakers, road safety officials, and other stakeholders in developing better strategies for accident prevention and traffic management. It is against this backdrop that this study seeks to statistically analyze the reported cases of road traffic accidents in Imo State from 1997 to 2003.
1.4 Aim and Objectives of Study
The aim of this study is to statistically analyze the reported cases of road traffic accidents in Imo State from 1997 to 2003.
The specific objectives of the study are to:
- Examine the yearly reported cases of road traffic accidents in Imo State from 1997 to 2003.
- Determine the trend and pattern of road traffic accidents within the study period.
