Material Excerpt on Transport Planning and Logistics Service Quality in E-commerce (A Case Study of Konga Nigeria)

ABSTRACT

Transport planning and logistics service quality in e-commerce refers to the coordination of movement, storage, and delivery of goods to ensure efficient customer order fulfillment in online retail operations. The aim of this study is to examine transport planning and logistics service quality in Konga Nigeria and how it influences delivery performance, cost efficiency, customer satisfaction, and last-mile operations. The motivation for this research is based on the increasing growth of online retail in Nigeria and the need to understand how transport systems affect service delivery outcomes, operational efficiency, and customer experience in real business settings. Data were collected through structured questionnaires administered to 150 respondents made up of customers and logistics personnel of Konga Nigeria. The findings show that 41.3% rated transport planning as effective while 25.3% rated it very effective. Logistics service quality recorded 40.0% high and 23.3% very high responses. Last-mile challenges were rated high by 36.7% and very high by 28.0%. Customer satisfaction influence recorded 38.7% high and 30.0% very high. Furthermore, 40.0% agreed and 33.3% strongly agreed that transport planning reduces cost. The outcome of this research shows that transport planning and logistics service quality have a strong relationship in Konga Nigeria, affecting delivery speed, customer satisfaction, and operational cost efficiency. Based on the result obtained, it was recommended that Konga Nigeria should integrate real-time tracking systems and automated delivery notifications to improve transparency and communication with customers.

1.1 Introduction

Transport planning and logistics service quality are critical components of modern e-commerce operations because they determine the efficiency with which goods move from sellers to consumers. Transport planning refers to the systematic process of organizing, coordinating, and managing transportation activities to ensure the timely and cost-effective movement of goods and services, while logistics service quality refers to the degree to which logistics operations meet customer expectations in terms of reliability, responsiveness, timeliness, and accuracy (Christopher, 2016). The rapid growth of e-commerce has transformed the global retail landscape by creating new opportunities for businesses and consumers. E-commerce enables organizations to conduct commercial transactions through electronic platforms, eliminating geographical barriers and expanding market access (Laudon & Traver, 2021).

As a prelude to other parts of this study, this chapter will discuss the background upon which this study was initiated, the statement of problems that led to this study, the aim and objectives of the study. Others are significance of the study, scope of work, research hypothesis and questions, limitation of the study and definition of terms.

1.2 Background of Study

Transport planning and logistics service quality have become essential components of modern business operations, particularly in the rapidly expanding e-commerce sector. The increasing adoption of internet technology and digital platforms has transformed the way consumers purchase goods and services, creating a growing need for efficient transportation and logistics systems. Transport planning involves the systematic organization and coordination of transportation resources to ensure the timely and cost-effective movement of goods, while logistics service quality refers to the ability of logistics operations to meet customer expectations in terms of reliability, responsiveness, timeliness, and accuracy. As e-commerce continues to grow globally, organizations are placing greater emphasis on improving transport planning and logistics service quality to achieve competitive advantage and customer satisfaction.

According to Christopher (2016), logistics management is a strategic process concerned with the efficient flow and storage of goods from the point of origin to the point of consumption. The author reported that effective logistics systems contribute significantly to organizational performance by reducing operational costs, improving service delivery, and enhancing customer satisfaction. In the e-commerce industry, logistics functions extend beyond transportation to include warehousing, inventory management, order processing, distribution, and customer support.

E-commerce according to Laudon and Traver (2021) refers to the buying and selling of goods and services through electronic networks, particularly the internet. The authors asserted that the rapid growth of online retailing has increased the importance of logistics and transportation systems because customer satisfaction depends heavily on efficient product delivery. Unlike traditional retail environments where customers physically obtain products, e-commerce businesses rely on logistics networks to bridge the gap between sellers and buyers.

Ballou (2007) stated that efficient transport planning involves route optimization, fleet scheduling, vehicle utilization, and delivery coordination. Proper transport planning helps organizations reduce delivery time, minimize transportation costs, and improve service reliability. In contrast, poor transport planning often results in delayed deliveries, increased operational expenses, and customer dissatisfaction.

Rushton, Croucher, and Baker (2022) affirmed that modern logistics operations increasingly rely on technology-driven solutions such as Global Positioning Systems (GPS), Geographic Information Systems (GIS), route optimization software, and real-time tracking systems. These technologies enable organizations to monitor deliveries, optimize transportation routes, and enhance overall logistics efficiency.

Customer satisfaction remains one of the most important indicators of success in e-commerce operations. According to Mentzer, Flint, and Hult (2001), logistics service quality consists of several dimensions, including delivery reliability, order accuracy, responsiveness, communication quality, and product condition upon delivery. The authors contend that customers evaluate e-commerce businesses not only on product quality but also on the effectiveness of logistics services. Consequently, organizations that consistently provide high-quality logistics services are more likely to achieve customer loyalty and long-term business success.

Globally, leading e-commerce organizations have invested heavily in logistics infrastructure and transportation networks to improve service quality and maintain competitiveness. Companies such as Amazon and Alibaba have developed sophisticated logistics systems capable of processing and delivering millions of customer orders efficiently. Chopra and Meindl (2019) reported that the integration of transportation management, inventory control, and information systems has become essential for achieving supply chain efficiency.

One of the leading e-commerce companies in Nigeria is Konga Nigeria, which provides a wide range of products and services through its online platform. Since its establishment, the company has developed logistics and distribution networks designed to facilitate efficient order fulfillment and customer satisfaction. According to Adebayo (2023), e-commerce firms in Nigeria face persistent logistics challenges arising from poor road infrastructure, traffic congestion, security concerns, and inadequate delivery systems. The author affirmed that these challenges often result in delayed deliveries, increased transportation costs, and reduced customer confidence in online retail services.

This study is set against the backdrop of increasing e-commerce activities in Nigeria, rising customer expectations for reliable delivery services, persistent transportation and logistics challenges, and the need to enhance transport planning and logistics service quality in Konga Nigeria.

1.3 Statement of Problems

The growth of e-commerce has increased the importance of transport planning and logistics service quality as essential determinants of organizational performance and customer satisfaction. In the highly competitive e-commerce industry, customers expect prompt delivery, accurate order fulfillment, reliable tracking systems, and efficient customer support. The ability of an e-commerce organization to meet these expectations depends largely on the effectiveness of its transport planning and logistics management systems. Despite advancements in logistics technology and distribution networks, many e-commerce firms continue to face operational challenges that affect service quality and delivery performance.

Additionally, the increasing volume of online orders has placed significant pressure on logistics systems, making it difficult for some organizations to maintain consistent service standards. Poor coordination between warehouse operations and transportation activities often results in delays, inventory inaccuracies, and inefficient resource utilization (Chopra and Meindl, 2019).

Furthermore, the growing demand for faster delivery services has increased pressure on Konga Nigeria's logistics network. The need to serve customers across different geographical locations requires efficient route planning, fleet management, and coordination of logistics activities. This study is set against the backdrop of increasing e-commerce activities in Nigeria, growing customer expectations for efficient delivery services, persistent logistics challenges, and the need to improve transport planning strategies and logistics service quality in Konga Nigeria.
