    CHAPTER ONE

    1.0 Introduction

    1.1 Background of Study

    Climate change has become a critical global issue affecting various aspects of human life, including education. Recent studies suggest that its influence extends beyond environmental concerns to impact educational outcomes, particularly in subjects requiring cognitive skills and critical thinking. According to IPCC (2021), climate change, characterized by long-term shifts in temperatures and weather patterns, has emerged as a significant challenge globally. The scientific community has documented its various impacts, including extreme weather events, rising sea levels, and altered ecosystems (IPCC, 2021). These environmental changes do not occur in isolation; they affect human activities and societal structures, including education.

    In the early 2000s, researchers began to explore the indirect effects of climate change on educational settings. Studies highlighted how extreme weather events, such as hurricanes and floods, disrupted schooling by damaging infrastructure and causing prolonged school closures (Anderson, 2003). These disruptions were found to disproportionately affect vulnerable populations, exacerbating educational inequalities.

    Research by Graff Zivin, Hsiang, and Neidell (2018) further substantiated these findings by demonstrating that higher temperatures were associated with lower test scores in subjects that require significant cognitive engagement, such as English language. Their study indicated that students' performance in English was more susceptible to heat-induced cognitive decline compared to other subjects, possibly due to the complex nature of language acquisition and usage.

    In recent years, the focus has expanded to include the cumulative and long-term impacts of climate change on educational outcomes. Researchers are now considering how repeated exposure to climate-related disruptions can create a persistent learning gap, particularly in critical subjects like English (Mekonnen, 2020). The increasing frequency and intensity of extreme weather events are forcing educators and policymakers to develop adaptive strategies to mitigate these effects and support students' learning continuity.

    Education systems worldwide are experiencing the repercussions of climate change. For instance, extreme weather conditions such as heatwaves and flooding can disrupt school schedules, damage infrastructure, and create unsafe learning environments (UNESCO, 2016). Moreover, climate-induced stress and health issues can impair students' cognitive functions and concentration levels, leading to declines in academic performance (Basu & Samet, 2002).

    Previous research has highlighted the adverse effects of heat exposure on cognitive abilities. Graff et al., (2018) found that elevated temperatures negatively influence test scores, particularly in subjects like English that demand more abstract thinking and verbal skills. Additionally, the psychological stress associated with extreme weather events can further exacerbate these challenges, as students may struggle with anxiety, trauma, and displacement (Fritze et al., 2008).

    Therefore, in Nigeria where the research was carried out, the activities that was conducted is to know the impact of climate change on the academic performance in English Language among senior secondary school students.


    1.2 Statement of Problems

    Investigation revealed that the climate change-induced extreme weather events such as heat waves, floods, and storms can lead to significant disruptions in school schedules and damage educational infrastructure. These disruptions can result in lost instructional time and negatively affect students' continuity in learning, particularly in subjects that require consistent practice and engagement, such as English (UNESCO, 2016; Anderson, 2003). Additionally, the impacts of climate change are not evenly distributed. Vulnerable populations, including those from lower socio-economic backgrounds, are more likely to experience severe educational disruptions and have fewer resources to mitigate these effects. This inequality can exacerbate existing educational disparities, particularly in subjects like English that are critical for academic and professional advancement (UNICEF, 2015).

    Furthermore, elevated temperatures have been shown to impair cognitive functions, including memory, attention, and critical thinking, all of which are essential for language acquisition and performance in English (Basu & Samet, 2002). There is a need to investigate how temperature variations specifically affect students' abilities to concentrate, comprehend, and perform in English language classes. Hence, it is against this backdrop that this study aims to investigate the Impact of Climate Change on the Academic Performance in English Language among Senior Secondary School Students.


    1.3 Aim and Objectives of Study

    The aim of the study is to investigate the Impact of Climate Change on the Academic Performance in English Language among Senior Secondary School Students. In achieving this aim, the following specific objectives were laid out as follows:

    1. To investigate how repeated exposure to climate-related disruptions influences long-term academic outcomes in English language proficiency;
    2. To examine the relationship between elevated ambient temperatures and students’ cognitive performance in English language tasks;
    3. To evaluate how extreme weather events such as heat waves, floods, and storms disrupt school schedules and infrastructure;
    4. To determine the correlation between psychological well-being and academic performance in English language studies; and
    5. To propose strategies that will aid mitigate educational disparities exacerbated by climate-related disruptions, ensuring equitable support for all students in English language learning.

    1.4 Research Questions

    The study came up with research questions so as to be able to ascertain the above stated objectives. The specific research questions for the study are stated below as follows:

    • How do extreme weather events caused by climate change disrupt the learning environments of senior secondary school students?
    • What is the relationship between elevated ambient temperatures and cognitive performance in English language among senior secondary school students?
    • How do these psychological effects correlate with academic performance in English language courses?
    • What are the long-term educational impacts of repeated climate-related disruptions on students' English language proficiency?
    • What strategies can be implemented to mitigate the negative impact of climate change on English language education among senior secondary school students?

    1.5 Research Hypothesis

    In order to pursue the objective of this study, the following generalized statements have been designed to guide and aids in obtaining the result for the experiment to be conducted. For this work, the null hypothesis will be represented with H0 while the alternative hypothesis will be represented with hypothesis H1.

    Hypothesis One

    • H0: Climate change negatively impacts the academic performance in English language among senior secondary school students
    • H1: Climate change positively impacts the academic performance in English language among senior secondary school students

    1.6 Significance of Study

    The significance of this research outcome will be beneficial to the following stakeholders:

    1. Educators and School Administrators: Educators can use the findings to implement targeted strategies that mitigate the impact of climate change on English language education. This includes adjusting curriculum delivery methods and scheduling to accommodate weather-related disruptions and ensuring continued focus on language skills development despite environmental challenges.
    2. Policymakers and Government Agencies: Policymakers can utilize the research to advocate for climate-resilient infrastructure investments in schools and educational institutions. They can also develop policies that support educators in addressing the cognitive and emotional impacts of climate change on students, aiming to maintain high standards of English language education.
    3. Parents and Community Members: Parents and community members can gain insights into how climate change affects their children's academic performance in English language. This knowledge can empower them to advocate for resources and support systems that promote optimal learning environments despite environmental stressors.
    4. Non-governmental Organizations (NGOs) and Advocacy Groups: NGOs and advocacy groups can use the research to raise awareness about the intersection of climate change and education. They can support initiatives that promote sustainable practices in schools and advocate for policies that prioritize educational equity, particularly for marginalized communities affected by climate-related disruptions.
    5. Businesses and Industry Leaders: Businesses and industry leaders can recognize the importance of a skilled workforce proficient in English language communication. They can support educational initiatives aimed at improving language skills among students, ensuring a future workforce that is resilient and adaptable in a changing climate.

    1.7 Scope of Study

    The scope of the research is focused on the Impact of Climate Change on the Academic Performance in English Language among Senior Secondary School Students using Okpe Local Government Area of Delta State as a case study.


    1.8 Limitations of the Study

    During the course of this study, many things militated against its completion, some of which are:

    1. Time Constraint: The time frame given to accomplish this project was very short due to school academic calendar and it was carried out under pressure which made the researcher not to implement some necessary features.
    2. Financial Constraint: Insufficient fund tends to impede the efficiency of the researcher in sourcing for the relevant materials, literature or information and in the process of data collection (internet, questionnaire and interview).

    1.9 Definition of Terms

    Climate Change:

    Climate change refers to long-term alterations in temperature, precipitation patterns, and other environmental factors due to human activities such as burning fossil fuels, deforestation, and industrial processes (IPCC, 2021).

    Academic Performance:

    Academic performance denotes the measurable outcomes of students' learning achievements in formal educational settings, typically assessed through grades, test scores, and educational benchmarks (UNESCO, 2021).

    English Language Proficiency:

    English language proficiency refers to the ability of individuals to understand, speak, read, and write in English effectively. It encompasses skills in grammar, vocabulary, pronunciation, and comprehension (Common European Framework of Reference for Languages, 2001).

    Senior Secondary School Students:

    Senior secondary school students are learners typically aged 15 to 18 years old, enrolled in the final years of secondary education before entering higher education or the workforce (UNESCO, 2016).

    Environmental Disruptions:

    Environmental disruptions refer to disturbances or changes in the natural environment caused by climate-related factors, such as extreme weather events (e.g., floods, droughts) and shifts in temperature patterns (UNEP, 2017).
