    ABSTRACT

    In-house journal is one of the preferred ways of communicating with the employees of an organization about various activities and developments that are taking place in any sphere of the organization. The study was carried out to examine The Place of In-House Journal in the Life of a Commercial Organization. Investigation revealed that Company publications have been identified as a major tool of every public relation department in engineering the success of the organization. The research design used in this report is descriptive design, utilizing questionnaire method to obtain information from the respondents for this project. A total of 80 (eighty) respondents were selected for this study to represent the entire population of the study. For null hypotheses were formulated and tested using the one-way ANOVA and the t-test statistical tools at zero point zero five (0.05) level of significance. Primary data were collected from the primary source which questionnaire was used as an instrument of data collection while secondary data were sources from textbooks, journals, newspapers and the internet were employed. The data were presented on a frequency distribution table and analyzed using simple percentage, while hypothesis was tested using chi-square test. The importance of the study is to discover the relevant of company’s image through effective communication. Based on the findings, the following recommendations are hereby suggested that Commercial Organizations should be encouraged and mandated to promote research by floating at least one in-house journal.

    CHAPTER ONE

    1.1 Introduction

    In-house journal, also called newsletter is one of the preferred ways of communicating with the employees of an organization about various activities and developments that are taking place in any sphere of the organization (Gupta, 2013). Similarly, an in-house journal is a publication that is released by businesses, government agencies, associations, organizations, and public sector projects to showcase their events, accomplishments, goods, and perspectives, as well as their upcoming projects. Since in-house journals are not intended for consumer purchase, they are not marked with a price. The majority of internal journals are intended for internal consumption, but some are distributed to external readers who are involved in the same industry and offer comparable services or goods (Ask Opinion 2018).

    As a prelude to other parts of this study, this chapter will discuss the background upon which this study was initiated, the statement of problems that led to this study, the Aim and Objectives of the study. Others are Significance of the study, Scope of work, Research hypothesis and questions, Limitation of the study and Definition of terms.


    1.2 Background of Study

    In-house journals have been given a variety of names, such as newsletters, employee newspapers and company newspapers, but, in effect, they carry out the same function. House journals are private publication and are therefore discussed separately from the commercial press. Over the years they have tended to change from pulpits to change from pulpits employers to preach from to supporting more open forms of management employee relation.

    The typical house journal of the past anal purpose affair with lots of photographs of men in suits, giving one to work for is now more or less moribund. From its inaugural session the United States House Representatives has kept a journal of its proceedings, in accordance with Article I, section 5 of the constitution which provides that Each house shall keep a journal of its proceedings, and from time to time publish the same excepting such parts as may in their judgment require secrecy and the years and nays of the members of either House, on any question shall at the desire of one fifth of those present be entered on the journal.

    The printed version published by order of the House of Representatives is presented here in electronic form. The journal should be seen as the minutes of floor action. It notes the matters considered by the House and the votes and other action taken. It does not record the actual debates, which can be consulted through the “link to date related documents” in the full text transcription of the journal. Therefore, in Nigeria where the research was carried out, the activities that was conducted is to know the Place of In-House Journal in the Life of a Commercial Organization.


    1.3 Statement of Problems

    Investigation revealed that Company publications have been identified as a major tool of every public relation department in engineering the success of the organization.

    Also, the tendency of the employee or management to misinterpret the information issued or published by the public relation department might lead to the misunderstanding of the information. This study shall therefore examine how to the problem through the use of in-house journal.


    1.4 Aim and Objectives of Study

    The aim of the study is to examine the Place of In-House Journal in the Life of a Commercial Organization. In achieving this aim, the following specific objectives were laid out as follows:

    1. To examine the importance and the place of in-house journal in the life of commercial organization;
    2. To find out how they reach to information and how the reaction improve the society in general;
    3. To determine how in-house journal enhance staff relationship in an organization;
    4. To assess the contribution of in house organ to individual harmony at the organization; and
    5. To find out how management and employee can effectively utilized the information research hem from the public relation department to promote the company’s image and also maximize profit in return.

    1.5 Research Questions

    The study came up with research questions so as to be able to ascertain the above stated objectives. The specific research questions for the study are stated below as follows:

    • Does the management and employees effectively utilize the information reaching them from the public relation department to promote the company’s image and also maximize profit in return?
    • Does the management and staff accessibility of information improve commercial organizational productivity?
    • Does in-house journal enhance staff relationship in an organization?
    • What are the contributions of in-house to individual harmony at the organization?
    • What importance does the place in-house journal play in the life of commercial organization?

    1.6 Research Hypothesis

    In order to pursue the objective of this study, the following generalized statements have been designed to guide and aids in obtaining the result for the experiment to be conducted. For this work, the null hypothesis will be represented with H0 while the alternative hypothesis will be represented with hypothesis H1.

    Hypothesis One

    • H0: Management and employees does not effectively utilize the information reaching them from the public relation department to promote the Company’s image.
    • H1: Management and employees effectively utilize the information reaching them from the public relation department to promote the Company’s image.

    1.7 Significance of Study

    The relevance of the study is to discover the relevant of Company’s image through effective communication. The findings of this research will be of great importance in the sense that is meant to find out if in-house organs serve as a mean of creating awareness on the company goals and objective work will also provide hints on how to go about achieving a good company publication.


    1.8 Scope of Study

    The scope of the research is focused on the Place of In-House Journal in the Life of a Commercial Organization in Nigeria.


    1.9 Limitations of the Study

    During the course of this study, many things militated against its completion, some of which are:

    1. Time Constraint: The time frame given to accomplish this project was very short due to school academic calendar and it was carried out under pressure which made the researcher not to implement some necessary features.
    2. Establishment Policies: Establishment policies posed a serious limitation as most staffs are not ready to release information needed for this research work. There were lots of information needed from the staffs of this establishment to enhance the study which took them time to release or they did not release at all for security purposes, hence the scope was reduced.
    3. Research Material: availability of research material is a major setback to the scope of the study.
    4. Financial Constraint: Insufficient fund tends to impede the efficiency of the researcher in sourcing for the relevant materials, literature or information and in the process of data collection (internet, questionnaire and interview).

    1.10 Definition of Terms

    In-House Journal:

    This is kind of magazine in journal produced within the organization normally focus on organization politics, product etc it not paid for.

    Commercial:

    This refers to advertising paid classified message on newspaper, magazine, and bull board.

    Organization:

    It is a social unit of people systematically structured and manager to meet a need or peruse collective goal.
