    ABSTRACT

    The study was carried out to investigate The Problems of Teaching Biology Practicals in Senior Secondary Schools. Investigation revealed that the widespread lack of adequate laboratory facilities and equipment in many schools. Also, many schools operate on limited budgets that do not allow for the regular purchase and maintenance of laboratory equipment. The research design used in this report is descriptive design, utilizing questionnaire method to obtain information from the respondents for this project. A total of 150 (one hundred and fifty) respondents were selected for this study to represent the entire population of the study. For null hypotheses were formulated and tested using the one-way ANOVA and the t-test statistical tools at zero point zero five (0.05) level of significance. Primary data were collected from the primary source which questionnaire was used as an instrument of data collection while secondary data were sources from textbooks, journals, newspapers and the internet were employed. The data were presented on a frequency distribution table and analyzed using simple percentage, while hypothesis was tested using chi-square test. The study will provide valuable insights into the current challenges faced in teaching biology practical, leading to a better understanding of the gaps and deficiencies in laboratory facilities and resources. Also, the findings will reveal the effect of class sizes on practical teaching, which will guide policymakers in making decisions about class management and resource allocation. Based on the findings of this research, it was recommended that schools should invest in upgrading and maintaining laboratory facilities to ensure that they are well-equipped with modern and functional tools and equipment necessary for effective practical instruction. Furthermore, professional development programs should be implemented to enhance the qualifications and skills of biology teachers.


    The Problems of Teaching Biology Practicals in Senior Secondary Schools

    CHAPTER ONE

    1.1 Introduction

    Biology Practical refers to hands-on laboratory activities and experiments that allow students to apply biological concepts and techniques in a controlled environment. These practicals are designed to enhance students' understanding of theoretical knowledge and develop practical skills in biology (Nworgu, 2015). The teaching of biology practical is a crucial aspect of science education, as it provides students with hands-on experience and a deeper understanding of biological concepts. Practical work in biology helps bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge and real-world applications, making it an essential component of the curriculum in senior secondary schools. However, the effective delivery of biology practicals in many secondary schools faces several challenges that impede the quality of education.

    As a prelude to other parts of this study, this chapter will discuss the background upon which this study was initiated, the statement of problems that led to this study, the Aim and Objectives of the study. Others are Significance of the study, Scope of work, Research hypothesis and questions, Limitation of the study and Definition of terms.


    1.2 Background of Study

    In the 1980s and 1990s, further efforts were made to improve science education, including the establishment of specialized science secondary schools and the introduction of more comprehensive science curricula. Despite these initiatives, the challenges of teaching biology practical persisted, largely due to systemic issues such as inadequate funding, poor infrastructure, and a shortage of qualified teachers (Okebukola, 2007). These problems were compounded by the rapid increase in student enrollment, which led to overcrowded classrooms and laboratories, making it difficult to conduct effective practical sessions (Adegoke, 2012).

    The advent of the Universal Basic Education (UBE) program in 1999 and subsequent educational reforms aimed at improving the quality of education in Nigeria brought renewed attention to the importance of science practicals. However, the impact of these reforms has been mixed, with many schools continuing to struggle with the same issues that have plagued science education for decades (Ogunleye, 2010). The lack of sustained investment in educational infrastructure and teacher development has meant that biology practical are often still taught in less-than-ideal conditions, limiting the effectiveness of this crucial aspect of science education.

    The teaching of biology practical in senior secondary schools is a critical aspect of science education, designed to provide students with hands-on experience and a deeper understanding of biological concepts. Practical activities in biology are essential because they allow students to observe and experiment with the natural world, thereby reinforcing theoretical knowledge acquired in the classroom. This experiential learning is vital for developing scientific skills, such as observation, analysis, and critical thinking, which are necessary for students' academic and professional futures in science-related fields. However, the effective delivery of biology practical in many senior secondary schools, particularly in developing countries like Nigeria, faces significant challenges. The history of science education in Nigeria has been marked by various reforms aimed at improving the quality of teaching and learning in secondary schools. Despite these efforts, biology, being one of the core science subjects, continues to encounter numerous obstacles, particularly in the practical component of its curriculum.

    One major issue is the persistent lack of adequate laboratory facilities and equipment. Studies by Okebukola (2007) and Adeyemo (2010) have consistently highlighted the inadequacies in school laboratories, noting that many schools are poorly equipped to handle the practical demands of the biology curriculum. This deficiency is often due to limited financial resources, which restrict the ability of schools to procure necessary materials and maintain existing equipment (Eze, 2014).

    The shortage of qualified and experienced biology teachers has been identified as a significant barrier to effective biology practical. Ogunleye (2010) points out that many schools struggle to attract and retain well-trained biology teachers, which negatively impacts the quality of practical instruction. The lack of continuous professional development for teachers further compounds this problem, as many educators are not updated with the latest advancements in teaching methodologies and practical techniques (Adeyemi, 2011).

    The consequences of these challenges are far-reaching, affecting not only the students' academic performance but also their interest in pursuing further studies or careers in biology and related sciences. According to Adegoke (2012), students who lack adequate exposure to practical work are less likely to develop the necessary skills and confidence required for success in science. This has implications for the broader goal of developing a scientifically literate population capable of contributing to national development.

    Financial constraints also play a significant role in limiting the availability of resources for biology practical. Schools often operate with limited budgets, which restricts their ability to purchase necessary materials and maintain existing laboratory equipment (Eze, 2014). Additionally, the lack of continuous professional development opportunities for teachers means that many educators are not equipped with the latest skills and knowledge to effectively conduct biology practical (Adeyemi, 2011).

    One of the significant problems is the inadequate provision of laboratory facilities and equipment. According to Okebukola (2007), many secondary schools in Nigeria lack the necessary infrastructure to conduct effective biology practical, leading to a reliance on theoretical instruction that does not fully engage students. This issue is compounded by the large class sizes common in many schools, which make it difficult for teachers to manage practical sessions effectively and provide individual attention to students (Adegoke, 2012). Therefore, in Nigeria where the research was carried out, the activities that was conducted is to know the Problems of Teaching Biology Practicals in Senior Secondary Schools.


    1.3 Statement of Problem

    Investigation revealed that the teaching of biology practical in senior secondary schools faces significant challenges that undermine the quality of science education. One of the primary problems is the widespread lack of adequate laboratory facilities and equipment in many schools. According to Okebukola (2007), this deficiency severely limits students' opportunities to engage in hands-on learning, which is crucial for understanding complex biological concepts. Without proper access to functional laboratories, students are often forced to rely on theoretical knowledge alone, which diminishes their ability to fully grasp the practical aspects of biology.

    Additionally, financial constraints play a pivotal role in the problems associated with teaching biology practical. Many schools operate on limited budgets that do not allow for the regular purchase and maintenance of laboratory equipment (Eze, 2014). This financial shortfall often leads to the deterioration of existing facilities and a lack of essential materials, further hindering the ability of teachers to conduct meaningful practical lessons.

    Furthermore, large class sizes pose a significant challenge to the effective teaching of biology practical. Adegoke (2012) notes that overcrowded classrooms make it difficult for teachers to provide individual attention to students during practical sessions, reducing the overall learning experience. This issue is exacerbated by the inadequate student-to-equipment ratio, where limited resources are stretched thin, preventing all students from fully participating in practical activities. It is against the backdrop that this study seeks to address these problems by evaluating the the problems of teaching biology practicals in senior secondary schools.


    1.4 Aim and Objectives of Study

    The aim of the study is to investigate the problems of teaching biology practicals in senior secondary schools. In achieving this aim, the following specific objectives were laid out as follows:

    1. To identify the key challenges faced by students during biology practical sessions and how these challenges affect their understanding and performance;
    2. To analyze the effect of class sizes on the effectiveness of biology practical and the extent to which overcrowded classrooms affect student learning;
    3. To assess the adequacy of laboratory facilities and equipment available for teaching biology practical in senior secondary schools;
    4. To examine the role of financial constraints in limiting the resources and materials available for biology practical;
    5. To evaluate the impact of teacher qualifications and training on the quality of biology practical instruction; and
    6. To propose recommendations for improving laboratory infrastructure, teacher training, and resource allocation to enhance the teaching and learning of biology practical in senior secondary schools.

    1.5 Research Questions

    The study came up with research questions so as to be able to ascertain the above stated objectives. The specific research questions for the study are stated below as follows:

    • Does the qualification and training of biology teachers affect the delivery and quality of practical instruction?
    • Are there primary challenges faced by students during biology practical sessions, and how do these challenges affect their understanding and performance in biology?
    • Is there any difference between the mean scores of rural and urban students taught biology using practical method?
    • What is the current state of laboratory facilities and equipment used for teaching biology practical in senior secondary schools?
    • What impact do class sizes have on the effectiveness of biology practical and the learning experience of students?
    • How do financial constraints influence the availability and maintenance of resources and materials for biology practical?
    • What strategies or interventions can be implemented to improve the quality of biology practical instruction and address the identified problems in senior secondary schools?

    1.6 Research Hypothesis

    In order to pursue the objective of this study, the following generalized statements have been designed to guide and aids in obtaining the result for the experiment to be conducted. For this work, the null hypothesis will be represented with H0 while the alternative hypothesis will be represented with hypothesis H1.

    Hypothesis One

    • H0: The qualifications and training of biology teachers do not significantly influence the quality of biology practical instruction in senior secondary schools
    • H1: The qualifications and training of biology teachers significantly influence the quality of biology practical instruction in senior secondary schools

    Hypothesis Two

    • H0: Inadequate laboratory facilities and equipment negatively impact the effectiveness of biology practical in senior secondary schools.
    • H1: Inadequate laboratory facilities and equipment positively impact the effectiveness of biology practical in senior secondary schools.

    1.7 Significance of Study

    The study will provide valuable insights into the current challenges faced in teaching biology practical, leading to a better understanding of the gaps and deficiencies in laboratory facilities and resources. By highlighting the impact of teacher qualifications and training on practical instruction, the study will inform the development of targeted professional development programs for biology educators.

    The findings will also reveal the effect of class sizes on practical teaching, which will guide policymakers in making decisions about class management and resource allocation. Financial constraints identified through the study will underscore the need for increased funding and support for schools to enhance their laboratory infrastructure.

    Ultimately, the study will contribute to the formulation of practical solutions and recommendations aimed at improving the overall quality of biology education in senior secondary schools, benefiting students and educators alike.


    1.8 Scope of Study

    The scope of the study focuses on the Problems of Teaching Biology Practicals in Senior Secondary Schools. The study of the research work was specifically based on the, senior secondary school in Yaba Local Government Area of Lagos District 4. The study is also limited to the problems of teaching biology practical in senior secondary school students SSIII in the area.


    1.9 Limitations of the Study

    Students studying the "Influence of Instructional Materials on Students’ Performance in English Language" may face limitations such as difficulty in accessing relevant and up-to-date instructional materials for their research, particularly in settings where resources are scarce. They might also encounter challenges in gathering reliable data from schools, as some institutions may be reluctant to share information or allow observations in classrooms.

    Additionally, students could face time constraints in conducting thorough research, especially if the study involves multiple schools or extensive data collection. Finally, there may be limitations related to the generalizability of findings, as the study’s outcomes might be influenced by specific local contexts that do not represent broader educational environments.


    1.10 Definition of Terms

    Biology practical: Refers to hands-on laboratory activities and experiments that allow students to apply biological concepts and techniques in a controlled environment.     Financial Constraints: Refers to the limitations imposed by insufficient funding or budgetary allocations, which affect the ability of schools to acquire and maintain laboratory equipment and materials. Financial constraints can significantly impact the quality of biology practical (Eze, 2014).

    Professional Development: Continuous education and training opportunities provided to teachers to update their skills and knowledge. Professional development is crucial for keeping educators informed about the latest teaching methods and advancements in biology practical (Adeyemi, 2011).
